Phillies optioned RHP Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
Gonzalez will never get a better opportunity to make the Opening Day rotation than the one he had this spring, but he blew it by posting a 7.54 ERA with 25 hits allowed over 14 1/3 innings. The Cuban defector is looking like a big-time bust to this point. Mar 29 - 8:25 AM

Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez surrendered four runs and eight hits in four innings Wednesday against the Astros.

This should just about settle matters as far as Gonzalez opening the season in Triple-A. He has a 7.53 ERA this spring, having allowed a whopping 25 hits in 14 1/3 innings.

Miguel Gonzalez allowed one run and five hits in 3 1/3 innings Friday against the Pirates.

Gonzalez struck out one and walked one. He hasn't exactly been impressive this spring, but he has gotten gradually better with each outing. The encouraging thing is that the walk today is the only one he's allowed in 10 1/3 innings. Less encouraging is that he's allowed three homers and 17 hits. Even as desperate as the Phillies are for pitching, starting Gonzalez off in Triple-A still makes the most sense.
Mar 20 - 4:39 PM

Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez surrendered two runs in three innings Sunday against the Red Sox.

Gonzalez surely ticked off his manager by shaking off Carlos Ruiz a couple of times before serving up a home run ball to Daniel Nava in the first inning. He pitched effective over the rest of his outing, though, allowing just one more hit. We'd still be pretty surprised if Gonzalez opens the year in the Phillies rotation.
Mar 15 - 4:52 PM

Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez was diagnosed with a right knee contusion.

Gonzalez left Tuesday's start against the Tigers after two-plus innings after he was hit in the leg by a comebacker. However, the Phillies only removed him for precautionary reasons and he should be fine for his next turn in the rotation.
Mar 10 - 2:57 PM

Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez left Tuesday's Grapefruit League start against the Tigers in the third inning after he was hit in the right foot by a comebacker.

Gonzalez threw a couple of warm-up pitches, but wasn't able to continue. He wasn't especially impressive prior to that, giving up three runs on five hits. He doesn't look like a solution in the Phillies' rotation right now.
Mar 10 - 1:54 PM

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro said Thursday that Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez will be stretched back out as a starter in spring training.

Gonzalez began the season at High-A as a starter but was eventually moved to the bullpen and pitched a lot better there. However, the Phils still hope the Cuban defector can be an effective starter over the long haul, and there should be open spots in their rotation. "The plan for him is to try to get him to the point where he’s a starter again and to put him in the mix as a starter for us next year," Amaro said. "We plan to bring him to camp as a starter and give him an opportunity to be that. Will he be a starter for us? I don’t know, but we have starter deficiencies and we have holes there and we'd like to put him in a position where he can at least compete for a spot. He wants to prepare himself as a starter mentally and physically this winter."

Phillies recalled RHP Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

Gonzalez had some arm issues earlier this year, but he has thrived since moving to the bullpen in the minors, putting up a 2.19 ERA and 51/17 K/BB ratio over 37 relief innings between Double- and Triple-A. The Phillies are hopeful that his three-year, $12 million contract will still pay off.

Phillies pitching prospect Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez is expected to be recalled next month.

Gonzalez has pitched well as a reliever at Triple-A Lehigh Valley this month, posting a 1.93 ERA in 10 games while sitting in the mid-90s with his fastball. The Cuban defector began the season on the DL with a shoulder issue and then got off to a rough start when healthy, but he's made up for lost time and remains an intriguing arm.

Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez holds a 2.25 ERA with 20 strikeouts over 12 innings for Double-A Reading since being moved to the bullpen.

He's been clocked as high as 97 mph. Gonzalez is still throwing all four of his pitches in relief and eventually could be moved back into the rotation, but for now the Phillies will stick with what's working. "Right now he is doing what he needs to do," said director of player development Joe Jordan. "Long-term, he can end up in the rotation." Gonzalez could get a cup of coffee with the Phils in September.

Phillies activated RHP Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez from the 60-day disabled list; optioned him to Double-A Reading.

Gonzalez's pitching arm is no longer an issue, but the Phillies want him to continue to work on things in the minors as he transitions from starter to reliever. The Cuban defector has put up a 4.70 ERA and 11/8 K/BB ratio over 15 1/3 innings at High-A Clearwater. He could eventually be added to the Phillies' bullpen in the second half.

Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez (shoulder, arm) will resume his rehab assignment with High-A Clearwater on Friday.

Gonzalez was shut down for a few weeks as he went through a "dead arm" phase, but he's feeling better now. The Cuban defector has been out all season with a shoulder injury and is no safe bet to join the major league club once healthy.

An MRI on Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez's pitching arm came back negative.

Gonzalez began feeling arm fatigue three starts into his rehab assignment, but there's nothing structurally wrong with him. He'll resume throwing Thursday and should resume his rehab assignment before long if all goes well.

Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez began feeling arm fatigue three starts into his rehab assignment.

He is heading to Philadelphia this week for examination by club doctors. Gonzalez, who signed a three-year, $12 million contract out of Cuba last August, has been battling right shoulder problems since spring training. The 27-year-old right-hander had allowed seven runs in 9 1/3 innings on his rehab at High-A Clearwater.

Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez (shoulder) pitched in his first minor league rehab game on Friday.

Gonzalez fired five innings at High-A Clearwater, allowing three runs on six hits and a pair of walks while fanning one. His fastball sat between 92-94 mph, which is a significant improvement over where he was in the spring. He's still several weeks away from being an option for the Phillies.
