Brandon Cumpton underwent Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery on Tuesday.

Dr. James Andrews performed the procedure, which typically comes with a 12-15 month recovery timetable. Cumpton will miss the entire 2015 season and he's probably not going to be back to 100 percent by the beginning of the 2016 campaign. The 26-year-old right-hander had been fighting for a long relief job this spring in Pirates camp.

Pirates recalled RHP Brandon Cumpton from Triple-A Indianapolis.

He'll replace Casey Sadler on the active roster. Cumpton has a 4.98 ERA over 10 starts with the Pirates this season and figures to pitch in long relief in his latest stint with the big club.

Pirates optioned RHP Brandon Cumpton to Triple-A Indianapolis.

Cumpton allowed four runs on nine hits over just 3 1/3 innings Wednesday in a spot start against the Cardinals. Francisco Liriano (oblique) is returning on Sunday.

Brandon Cumpton was tagged for four runs and nine hits in 3 1/3 innings by the Cardinals on Monday.

Even if Cumpton went seven scoreless tonight, the plan appeared to be to send him down after the game. With Francisco Liriano returning, Cumpton probably won't go right back into the rotation after the All-Star break.

Pirates recalled RHP Brandon Cumpton from Triple-A Indianapolis.

Cumpton will start on Wednesday against the Cardinals, taking Gerrit Cole's (lat) spot in the rotation. With Francisco Liriano (oblique) slated to return over the weekend, Cumpton will likely be sent back down after Wednesday's outing. He holds a 4.61 ERA and 32/12 K/BB ratio in 52 2/3 innings at the big league level this season.

Brandon Cumpton will be called up to start Wednesday against the Cardinals.

He'll take the place of Gerrit Cole (lat) in Pittsburgh's starting rotation. Cumpton owns a 4.61 ERA and 32/12 K/BB ratio in 52 2/3 innings over nine starts this season and is worth using in NL-only leagues.

Pirates optioned RHP Brandon Cumpton to Triple-A Indianapolis.

With Gerrit Cole returning on Saturday, Clint Hurdle was faced with a tough decision as to who would lose their spot in the rotation. Despite pitching better of late and winning his last three decisions, Cumpton was the odd man out. He's likely to return at some point this season.

Brandon Cumpton got a no-decision, allowing two runs over seven innings in Friday's win over the Mets.

Cumpton was solid, yielding only the two runs in the fourth inning on a Lucas Duda single. Overall, he allowed six hits, walked one, and struck out four. The right-hander now has three consecutive quality starts, lowering his ERA to 4.61 with a 1.33 WHIP and a 32/12 K/BB ratio. Cumpton will face the Diamondbacks at home in his next start.

Brandon Cumpton kept the Cubs offense silent over seven shutout innings on Sunday, and the Pirates held on late for a 2-1 win.

Cumpton allowed just two singles and walked two on the afternoon, striking out four. It was the third straight win for the right-hander and easily his best start this season. He owns a less-impressive 4.93 ERA and 1.38 WHIP through eight starts, but he's trending in the right direction and he'll take on the Mets on Friday.

Brandon Cumpton got the no-decision, allowing three runs over six innings in Tuesday's loss to the Reds.

The stats don't show it, but Cumpton has been solid for the Pirates in seven starts as he's shuttled back and forth between the majors and Triple-A Indianapolis. On Tuesday, he allowed eight hits, walked one, and struck out four. Cumpton now owns a 5.82 ERA but 10 of the 25 earned runs he has allowed came in one start. He'll try to lower his ERA further when he takes on the Cubs at Wrigley in his next start.

Brandon Cumpton held the Cubs to two runs over five innings and struck out five in a win on Wednesday.

Cumpton's ERA took a huge hit when he was torched for 10 earned runs on May 31, but he's allowed three runs or fewer four times in six starts (and four in the other). He'll be worth playing in NL-only leagues for as long as he's in the Pirates rotation.

Brandon Cumpton bounced back from a miserable performance last week, allowing three runs on eight hits over 5 1/3 innings in Friday’s victory over the Brewers.

Cumpton walked a pair and struck out three in the ballgame. While he still wasn’t at his best, the Pirates offense provided 15 runs of support which made it much easier to secure his first win of the season. With a 6.51 ERA and 1.55 WHIP on the season, he remains an unappealing fantasy option despite the strong matchup against the Cubs on Wednesday.

Brandon Cumpton was obliterated for 11 runs -- 10 earned -- over 3 2/3 innings Saturday in a loss to the Dodgers.

Cumpton pitched well Monday against the Mets, yielding just two runs -- one earned -- over six innings, but he came back down to earth with a splat on Saturday in Los Angeles. The right-hander surrendered two runs in the first inning, four runs in the third inning, and five runs in the fourth inning, never giving the Pittsburgh offense a chance. He is not a fantasy option, and it's sad that he's in the Bucs' rotation.
