Rangers signed RHP Brandon Cumpton to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.
Cumpton missed all of 2015 and 2016 following Tommy John surgery and shoulder issues, but he finally made it back in 2017 to post a 3.86 ERA and 33/17 K/BB ratio over 37 1/3 relief innings across three levels in the minors. He hasn't pitched in the majors since 2014 and is merely a flyer at this point. Jan 5 - 10:17 AM

Brandon Cumpton (elbow) threw an inning in a simulated game on Friday.

It's the first game-like action for the right-hander since undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2015. He's still a long way away from possibly contributing to the Pirates, but this was an important step in the process.

Pirates reassigned RHP Brandon Cumpton, OF Eury Perez, LHP Dan Runzler, RHP Jason Stoffel, INF Eric Wood, and 1B/OF Joey Terdoslavich to minor league camp.

No surprises among this round of cuts from Pirates camp. Cumpton hasn't appeared in a game at the major league level since the 2014 season. He underwent Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery in 2015.

Brandon Cumpton underwent Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery on Tuesday.

Dr. James Andrews performed the procedure, which typically comes with a 12-15 month recovery timetable. Cumpton will miss the entire 2015 season and he's probably not going to be back to 100 percent by the beginning of the 2016 campaign. The 26-year-old right-hander had been fighting for a long relief job this spring in Pirates camp.

Brandon Cumpton was tagged for four runs and nine hits in 3 1/3 innings by the Cardinals on Monday.

Even if Cumpton went seven scoreless tonight, the plan appeared to be to send him down after the game. With Francisco Liriano returning, Cumpton probably won't go right back into the rotation after the All-Star break.

Pirates optioned RHP Brandon Cumpton to Triple-A Indianapolis.

With Gerrit Cole returning on Saturday, Clint Hurdle was faced with a tough decision as to who would lose their spot in the rotation. Despite pitching better of late and winning his last three decisions, Cumpton was the odd man out. He's likely to return at some point this season.

Brandon Cumpton kept the Cubs offense silent over seven shutout innings on Sunday, and the Pirates held on late for a 2-1 win.

Cumpton allowed just two singles and walked two on the afternoon, striking out four. It was the third straight win for the right-hander and easily his best start this season. He owns a less-impressive 4.93 ERA and 1.38 WHIP through eight starts, but he's trending in the right direction and he'll take on the Mets on Friday.
