Cubs OF prospect Eloy Jimenez said that he hopes to make the Opening Day roster.
"I think [it’s possible]. All I’ve got to do is play good and prove to them that I’m ready to play, and see what happens," Jimenez said through a Spanish language interpreter. It might be a fun thought, but don't count it as a realistic one. The 20-year-old spent the 2016 season at Low-A South Bend, where he hit .329/.369/.532 with 14 homers and 81 RBI over 432 at-bats. Fine numbers, to be sure, but an outright jump to the Cubbies at this point in his development would be a major surprise. Feb 22 - 6:43 PM

Cubs OF prospect Eloy Jimenez provided three hits in Tuesday's win for Low-A South Bend.

The three-hit explosion extended his hitting streak to nine games. He's hit an absurd .588 during that span while lifting his season average from .322 to .347. Jimenez has taken the Midwest League by storm this season. He leads the league in doubles (35), slugging percentage (.550) and OPS (.934) and is also second in batting average. The Cubs had to part with several top prospects at the trade deadline but were able to hold onto Jimenez. The 19-year-old has an extremely bright future ahead of him.

Cubs OF prospect Eloy Jimenez reached base six times in Monday's doubleheader for Low-A South Bend.

Jimenez went 4-for-4 with a homer and four RBI as the Cubs defeated Peoria for the doubleheader sweep. He's also second in doubles (30), second in hits (112), second in batting average (.330), second in total bases (177) and fifth in home runs (11). Jimenez was offered up as part of the Aroldis Chapman trade but the Yankees wanted Gleyber Torres instead.

Cubs prospect Eloy Jimenez had a monster night on Sunday, blasting a three-run home run and making a ridiculous leaping catch as the World Team beat the U.S. squad 11-3.

Jimenez made perhaps the play of the game, leaping over the wall in foul territory along the right field line to make a ridiculous catch. He then showed off massive power with a towering three-run shot off the facing of the third deck in left field at Petco Park. He also had an RBI double in the game, finishing the night 2-for-3. He has been impressive at Low-A South Bend as well this season, slashing .332/.372/.527 with 10 homers, 58 RBI and six stolen bases in 80 games.

Cubs OF prospect Eloy Jimenez blasted a game-tying three-run homer Tuesday in the West's come-from-behind win in the Midwest League All-Star Game.

He earned MVP honors by helping the West erase a seven-run deficit. Jimenez has been a force of nature during his 14-game hitting streak, batting .436 over that span with nine RBI. The 19-year-old leads the Midwest League with 24 doubles and 88 hits this season. He's also the league leader in OPS (.914) and slugging percentage (.535). Obviously Jimenez has nothing left to prove in Low-A and should expect a promotion in the near future.

Cubs OF prospect Eloy Jimenez tallied four hits Tuesday in a win for Low-A South Bend.

It was his first career four-hit game. The 19-year-old Dominican Republic native raised his average from .188 to .333 in the victory. Jimenez only stole three bags in 57 games last year but already has two in five games this season. There's still a long way to go in his development, which is fine because the Cubs are loaded right now and probably won't need him for a few years.
