Cubs pitching prospect Ivan Pineyro impressed with a brilliant seven-inning performance Sunday in a win for Double-A Tennessee.
Pineyro collected five strikeouts and didn't walk a batter. He's held his opponents scoreless in two of his last four outings, contributing a stingy 2.70 ERA during that span. The 23-year-old has limited hitters to a .206 average in 112 plate appearances this season. Pineyro has only made 16 starts in Double-A and will need several more before he's ready to reach the next level. May 4 - 3:47 PM

Cubs prospect right-hander Ivan Pineyro continued his strong 2014 for Double-A Tennessee, striking out eight in 6 2/3 shutout innings on Friday.

Pineyro allowed just two hits and one walk, lowering his season ERA to 1.15 and WHIP to 1.021 while increasing his K/9 to 8.6. Pineyro lacks the blistering fastball of many top prospects, but good pitchability and secondary pitches are turning him into an under the radar pitching prospect who could see time in Wrigley soon.

Cubs right-handed pitching prospect Ivan Pineyro struck out four en route to allowing one run in five innings for Double-A Tennessee.

Pineyro has seven strikeouts in nine innings while allowing only three runs (two earned) in his introduction to Double-A. He only made 11 starts in High-A after 13 starts in Low-A in 2013, so his early success could be the harbinger of things to come. Pineyro has an average fastball, but has shown a disappearing change-up and an improving curve ball, so he could turn into a mid-rotation starter who could provide value to the Cubs relatively soon.

Cubs acquired RHP Ivan Pineyro and a PTBNL from the Nationals for OF Scott Hairston and a PTBNL.

Pineyro, a 21-year-old native of the Dominican, has registered a 3.24 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 72/22 K/BB ratio in 77 2/3 innings (15 starts) this season between Low-A Hagerstown and High-A Potomac. It's a pretty nice get for the Cubs, who continue to bolster their farm system.
