Dariel Alvarez won't play in the Orioles' weekend series against the Blue Jays due to visa issues.

Alvarez has not gotten his U.S. work visa finalized, so if he were to accompany the O's north of the border he wouldn't be allowed back into the country following the series. The team will likely instead option him to the minors for the series and recall a position player in his absence. Alvarez, 26, should see some time in the Orioles' outfield down the stretch.

According to MASN's Roch Kubatko, the Orioles are calling up outfielder Dariel Alvarez.

Alvarez has tallied 16 home runs and 72 RBI in 130 games this season with Triple-A Norfolk, but that's come with a mediocre .275/.305/.424 overall batting line. The 26-year-old probably won't hold mixed league fantasy value.

Orioles prospect OF Dariel Alvarez slugged a pair of solo home runs on Thursday for Triple-A Norfolk.

Alvarez now has six long balls on the season, but he’s batting just .237/.267/.371 with a 2.1% walk rate in 195 plate appearances. The 26-year-old was signed by Baltimore out of Cuba in 2013 and performed well last season in his first full stateside campaign, posting a .306/.330/.472 batting line with 15 home runs and 37 doubles in 564 plate appearances between the Double- and Triple-A levels. Alvarez should make his big league debut with Orioles at some point this season, but he’ll first need to right the ship in Triple-A.

Orioles prospect OF Dariel Alvarez went 4-for-6 with a home run, two doubles and six RBI on Monday for Double-A Bowie.

Alvarez, 25, is off to a great start this year in his first full season after defecting from Cuba and signing with the Orioles last summer. Through Bowie's first 41 games, the right-handed hitter is batting .349/.364/.568 with 22 extra-base hits and 38 RBI, but his free-swinging approach (16/3 strikeout-to-walk ratio) highlights holes in his game that will surely be exploited in the major leagues.
