Roch Kubatko of MASN reports the Orioles still believe that Dariel Alvarez (elbow) can reach the majors as a pitcher.

Alvarez has been doing conditioning drills and exercises that are designed to get him back on the mound and he should be close to 100 percent by May. Alvarez was converted from outfielder to pitcher last spring, but he tore the UCL in his right elbow and underwent Tommy John surgery in April. The 29-year-old native of Cuba will attend Baltimore's minicamp in January, and that should give the Orioles a better look at how much progress he's made.

Dariel Alvarez underwent Tommy John surgery on Tuesday.

Alvarez tore the UCL in his right elbow while trying to make the conversion from an outfielder to a pitcher this spring. Baltimore re-signed him to a minor league contract last week and the 28-year-old native of Cuba will rehab with the organization.

Orioles re-signed RHP Dariel Alvarez to a minor league contract.

The outfielder-turned-pitcher was recently informed that he needs Tommy John surgery on his right elbow. He'll rehab this year under the Orioles' umbrella. Alvarez, now 28 years old, got an $800,000 signing bonus from Baltimore in July 2013 after defecting from his native Cuba.

Orioles released OF Dario Alvarez.

That opens a roster spot for Andrew Faulkner, who was acquired in a trade with Texas on Thursday. It's been an incredibly tough week for Alvarez, who was just informed that he needs Tommy John surgery. The outfielder was expected to try his hand at pitching this year but obviously won't have that chance now.

Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com reports that following an MRI on his right elbow, Dariel Alvarez is now expected to require Tommy John surgery.

Alvarez was experiencing soreness in his right elbow prior to the MRI. His upcoming Tommy John surgery will sideline him for the remainder of the 2017 season. The Orioles initially signed him as an outfielder, but the 28-year-old was also testing out his potential as a reliever this spring.

Dariel Alvarez will start a pitching program in minor league camp.

Originally signed as an outfielder, Alvarez has appeared in just 14 games with the Orioles over the past two seasons and has posted some underwhelming numbers in the minors, so it's worth a shot. The 28-year-old is expected to pitch as a reliever and could get into some games later on in the spring. The plan also calls for him to see some time at DH.

Orioles optioned OF Dariel Alvarez to Triple-A Norfolk; re-assigned RHP Richard Rodriguez to minor league camp.

It's not surprise that either player is an early cut. A 28-year-old Cuban defector, Alvarez has seen just 35 plate appearances with the Orioles over the last two years.

Dariel Alvarez confirmed Saturday that he remains focused on being a hitter and an outfielder and isn't interested in switching to pitching at this time.

There have been reports that the O's might try to convert him to a pitcher. Alvarez possesses a strong arm and did pitch years ago in his native Cuba. The 28-year-old hit .288/.324/.284 with four homers, 49 RBI and seven stolen bases in 130 games at Triple-A Norfolk in 2016.

Alvarez was only up for a cup of coffee while Pedro Alvarez was on the bereavement list. Alvarez (Pedro species) is set to return, though, leaving Alvarez (Dariel species) out in the cold. The 27-year-old outfielder will return to a .271/.309/.363 triple slash down in Triple-A.

Orioles optioned OF Dariel Alvarez to Triple-A Norfolk.

There's playing time to be had in the Orioles' outfield, but Alvarez hit just .182 this spring to earn a trip back to the minors. It's unlikely he'll ever be more than an extra outfielder.
Tue, Mar 29, 2016 06:00:00 PM

Dariel Alvarez went 0-for-3 on Saturday and is 1-for-10 so far this spring.

The Orioles seemed quite a bit higher on Alvarez a year ago than they are now, but the opportunity is there to claim some playing time in an outfield corner if he excels this spring. So far, the early results aren't promising.
