Cubs prospect RHP C.J. Edwards allowed one run on one hit and three walks and struck out eight batters over five innings on Monday for Double-A Tennessee.
Edwards was sidelined for over three months with a shoulder issue and didn’t come off the disabled list until late July. The 22-year-old right-hander has been dealing since returning to Double-A Tennessee, posting a 1.93 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 25-10 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 23 1/3 innings (five starts) in August. He’s also allowed just 12 hits (zero home runs) during that span, good for a .154 opponents’ batting average. The early-season injury has delayed Edwards’ developmental timeline, though he could still be in line for a call-up at this time next year provided he stays healthy. Aug 26 - 3:18 PM

Cubs right-handed pitching prospect C.J. Edwards went four shutout innings in his first start of the season.

Edwards only threw 64 pitches while allowing one hit and one walk, and striking out four. The Cubs are clearly managing his pitch count, which could signal that he may be called up in the latter half of 2014. Edwards has struck out 11.7 per nine innings for his career, so he could be a solid pickup down the stretch.

A slender right-hander, Edwards is a former 48th-round pick who has been fantastic since entering pro ball, posting a 1.68 ERA and 207/59 K/BB ratio over 160 1/3 innings.
