Carl Edwards Jr. was lifted from Game 4 of the NLCS with an apparent injury.

Trainer Ed Halbur came out to the mound to check on Edwards in the seventh inning, after which the right-hander was lifted from the contest. The extent and circumstance of Edwards' injury are not yet known, but the Cubs should pass along word after the game.

With Aroldis Chapman off, Carl Edwards Jr. earned the save in Thursday's win over the Giants.

The save was the first of his major league career, and he did it without any drama, registering a strikeout in a clean inning of work. It's a commentary on the state of the Cubs' bullpen that the 24-year-old Edwards got the call in that spot -- with Hector Rondon and Pedro Strop both sidelined, Edwards has become one of the more reliable arms in the pen. He's certainly earned all the opportunities he's gotten, posting a 3.04 ERA, 0.75 WHIP and 36/10 K/BB ratio over 26 2/3 innings of relief to date.

Cubs recalled RHP Carl Edwards Jr. from Triple-A Iowa.

He'll replace the injured Dexter Fowler (hamstring) on the active roster. Edwards, 24, has made five appearances with the Cubs this season and owns a 4.26 ERA and 35/17 K/BB ratio over 25 1/3 innings in Triple-A.

Cubs optioned RHP Carl Edwards Jr. to Triple-A Iowa.

Cubs recalled RHP Carl Edwards Jr. from Triple-A Iowa.

Edwards will serve as the Cubs' 26th man for Wednesday's day-night doubleheader against the Padres. The former top-100 starting pitching prospect owns a 2.38 ERA and 18/7 K/BB ratio in 11 1/3 innings of relief this season at the Triple-A level.

Cubs optioned RHP Carl Edwards Jr. to Triple-A Iowa.

Edwards is an interesting long-term relief arm, but there's not room for him in the bullpen at the moment. The former top-100 prospect will get his shot eventually.

Cubs recalled RHP C.J. Edwards from Triple-A Iowa.

The 24-year-old has posted a terrific 2.87 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 41/17 K/BB ratio over 53 1/3 innings between Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa. He'll provide an extra weapon out of the bullpen for the Cubs in the final month of the season.

Cubs prospect RHP C.J. Edwards has been promoted to Triple-A Iowa from Double-A Tennessee.

Edwards is moving up to the minor league’s highest level after posting a 2.66 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 36/17 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 23 2/3 innings out of the bullpen for Tennessee. The 23-year-old right-hander appeared in 13 games for the Smokies and was 4-for-5 in save opportunities. Edwards had been especially dominant of late, rattling off seven consecutive hitless innings with 12 strikeouts in his last four appearances. The Cubs decision to move Edwards to the bullpen this season appears to be paying immediate dividends, and it’s almost a foregone conclusion we’ll see him pitching at Wrigley Field at some point this summer.

Cubs optioned RHP C.J. Edwards to Triple-A Iowa.

Edwards was limited to 53 2/3 minor league innings last season due to a shoulder injury, so there was no shot of him making the Opening Day roster. The 23-year-old prospect will likely carry an innings limit in 2015. He's not worth speculating on in standard fantasy leagues.

C.J. Edwards (finger) threw a successful bullpen session on Saturday.

The top prospect had been dealing with an injury to his right index finger, but it appears to be a minor issue. Even if he impresses in Cubs camp this spring, he's likely ticketed for a return to Double-A Tennessee to begin the season.

Cubs purchased the contract of RHP C.J. Edwards from Double-A Tennessee.

One of the game's top pitching prospects, Edwards dealt with shoulder issues in 2014 but pitched well when healthy, holding a 2.44 ERA with 46 strikeouts over 48 Double-A frames. He could return to Double-A to start 2015.

Cubs prospect RHP C.J. Edwards allowed one run on one hit and three walks and struck out eight batters over five innings on Monday for Double-A Tennessee.

Edwards was sidelined for over three months with a shoulder issue and didn’t come off the disabled list until late July. The 22-year-old right-hander has been dealing since returning to Double-A Tennessee, posting a 1.93 ERA, 0.94 WHIP and 25-10 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 23 1/3 innings (five starts) in August. He’s also allowed just 12 hits (zero home runs) during that span, good for a .154 opponents’ batting average. The early-season injury has delayed Edwards’ developmental timeline, though he could still be in line for a call-up at this time next year provided he stays healthy.

Cubs prospect RHP C.J. Edwards allowed two hits and two walks and struck out seven batters over five scoreless innings on Tuesday for Double-A Tennessee.

Edwards made four starts in April before shoulder inflammation forced him to the disabled list for more than three months. The 21-year-old right-hander has pitched well since returning to Tennessee, posting a 1.96 ERA and 17-7 strikeout-to-walk ratio over 18 1/3 innings (four starts). Opposing hitters are batting just .177/.268/.274 against him during that span.
