Carl Edwards Jr. was charged with three runs and didn't retire a batter in Friday's loss to the Cardinals.
Handed the ball in the top of the eighth inning with the Cubs clinging to a one-run lead, Edwards yielded a leadoff double to Matt Carpenter and then walked consecutive batters to load the bases before being pulled. All three runners came around to score, along with six more as the Cubs' bullpen imploded. Hector Rondon also had a particularly rough day, allowed four runs without recording an out. Edwards boasts a 2.82 ERA and has struck out 56 over 38 1/3 innings this season, but walks (24) remain his big bugaboo. Jul 21 - 6:03 PM

Carl Edwards Jr. pitched two perfect innings out of the pen Tuesday against the Phillies.

It's quite a luxury for the Cubs that one of the league's best relievers doesn't even rate as their seventh- or eighth-inning guy. Edwards has allowed just two hits over 12 scoreless innings to date.

Cubs placed RHP Carl Edwards Jr. on the bereavement list.

He would figure to miss the weekend series against the Pirates. Brian Duensing (back) was activated from the DL to take Edwards' spot in the bullpen.

Carl Edwards Jr. (hamstring) said he expects to be available for Game 5 of the NLCS on Thursday.

Edwards was pulled from a relief appearance in Game 4 on Wednesday after experiencing tightness in his left hamstring, but it was apparently nothing significant. The 25-year-old right-hander has delivered 3 2/3 scoreless innings over five appearances this postseason for the Cubs.

Carl Edwards Jr. was forced out of Game 4 of the NLCS on Wednesday due to left hamstring tightness.

Edwards' hamstring tightened up on him in the seventh inning. After receiving a mound visit from trainer Ed Halbur and attempting to throw the ball, he was subsequently relieved of duty. The 25-year-old right-hander will be reevaluated before Game 5 on Thursday.

Carl Edwards Jr. was lifted from Game 4 of the NLCS with an apparent injury.

Trainer Ed Halbur came out to the mound to check on Edwards in the seventh inning, after which the right-hander was lifted from the contest. The extent and circumstance of Edwards' injury are not yet known, but the Cubs should pass along word after the game.

With Aroldis Chapman off, Carl Edwards Jr. earned the save in Thursday's win over the Giants.

The save was the first of his major league career, and he did it without any drama, registering a strikeout in a clean inning of work. It's a commentary on the state of the Cubs' bullpen that the 24-year-old Edwards got the call in that spot -- with Hector Rondon and Pedro Strop both sidelined, Edwards has become one of the more reliable arms in the pen. He's certainly earned all the opportunities he's gotten, posting a 3.04 ERA, 0.75 WHIP and 36/10 K/BB ratio over 26 2/3 innings of relief to date.

Cubs recalled RHP Carl Edwards Jr. from Triple-A Iowa.

Edwards will serve as the Cubs' 26th man for Wednesday's day-night doubleheader against the Padres. The former top-100 starting pitching prospect owns a 2.38 ERA and 18/7 K/BB ratio in 11 1/3 innings of relief this season at the Triple-A level.

Cubs optioned RHP Carl Edwards Jr. to Triple-A Iowa.

Edwards is an interesting long-term relief arm, but there's not room for him in the bullpen at the moment. The former top-100 prospect will get his shot eventually.

Cubs recalled RHP C.J. Edwards from Triple-A Iowa.

The 24-year-old has posted a terrific 2.87 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 41/17 K/BB ratio over 53 1/3 innings between Double-A Tennessee and Triple-A Iowa. He'll provide an extra weapon out of the bullpen for the Cubs in the final month of the season.

Cubs prospect RHP C.J. Edwards has been promoted to Triple-A Iowa from Double-A Tennessee.

Edwards is moving up to the minor league’s highest level after posting a 2.66 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 36/17 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 23 2/3 innings out of the bullpen for Tennessee. The 23-year-old right-hander appeared in 13 games for the Smokies and was 4-for-5 in save opportunities. Edwards had been especially dominant of late, rattling off seven consecutive hitless innings with 12 strikeouts in his last four appearances. The Cubs decision to move Edwards to the bullpen this season appears to be paying immediate dividends, and it’s almost a foregone conclusion we’ll see him pitching at Wrigley Field at some point this summer.

Cubs optioned RHP C.J. Edwards to Triple-A Iowa.

Edwards was limited to 53 2/3 minor league innings last season due to a shoulder injury, so there was no shot of him making the Opening Day roster. The 23-year-old prospect will likely carry an innings limit in 2015. He's not worth speculating on in standard fantasy leagues.
