Athletics acquired RHP Frankie Montas from the Dodgers in the Josh Reddick and Rich Hill trade.
Acquired from the White Sox in the three-team Todd Frazier deal over the winter, Montas has been limited to just 16 innings in the minors this season due to a rib issue. Still, he has a big arm and was recently ranked No. 82 on Baseball America’s midseason list. The Athletics could attempt to develop him as a starter, but he has the potential to be an impact bullpen arm. Aug 1 - 2:28 PM

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that Frankie Montas will be sidelined for 4-8 weeks with a broken rib.

Montas had surgery to remove the first rib from his right rib cage back in February. Rosenthal says that this issue is related, as the rib that's broken showed signs of stress but was not cracked at the time. Montas was still in the process of getting stretched out in the minors and realistically probably can't be counted on for much, if anything, in the majors this season after his latest setback.
Jun 24 - 2:46 PM

Dodgers activated RHP Frankie Montas from the 60-day disabled list and optioned him to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Montas is expected to be stretched out as a starter at Triple-A to provide much needed rotation depth for the Dodgers. The 23-year-old registered a 4.80 ERA, 1.53 WHIP and 20/9 K/BB ratio over 15 innings with the Dodgers in 2015.
Jun 12 - 5:59 PM

Frankie Montas (rib) gave up one run on two hits over two innings in his rehab debut with Double-A Tulsa on Sunday.

Montas will be stretched out as a starter on his rehab to give the Dodgers some options once he's ready. The young right-hander needed surgery in February to remove the first rib from his right rib cage. "He’ll be eligible June 4, I think. Then we’ll have to make a decision where he is in his rehab and where we’re at here with our ballclub," manager Dave Roberts said Sunday. "At that point in time, it obviously would be in the ’pen (the only role he would be ready for that quickly). So if there’s a need there, then we would make that move. If not, we would continue to build him up."

Frankie Montas (rib) will begin a rehab assignment at Double-A Tulsa on Saturday.

Montas had rib resection surgery in February and has been throwing in extended spring training. He could join the Dodgers' bullpen next month.
May 20 - 5:36 PM

Frankie Montas (rib) has resumed a throwing program.

Montas underwent surgery last month to remove his right first rib, something that was needed due to a stress reaction in the rib. He's expected to miss a good chunk of the first half of the season.
Mar 6 - 12:54 PM

Dodgers placed RHP Frankie Montas on the 60-day disabled list with a rib injury.

The move clears space on the 40-man roster, which could be for Cuban Yasiel Sierra since his deal is expected to become official soon. Montas had surgery earlier this month to remove a rib and will miss the first couple months of the season.
Feb 21 - 8:29 AM

The Dodgers announced that Frankie Montas had surgery on Friday to remove his right first rib.

Montas, the team's #4 ranked prospect, experienced a stress reaction in his rib, which necessitated the surgery. The team expects Montas to make a full recovery, though he'll be sidelined for 2-4 months. While it's a large enough setback to ensure he won't make the Opening Day roster, he should still find himself in Los Angeles, either as a starter or reliever, at some point in 2016.
Feb 12 - 7:18 PM

Dodgers GM Andrew Friedman said that the team plans on initially developing RHP Frankie Montas as a starter.

The Dodgers acquired Montas as part of the three-team trade that sent Todd Frazier to the White Sox. While he's viewed by many scouts as a future late-inning reliever--Friedman himself called Montas a potential "impact bullpen arm"--they'll look to see if he can stick in the rotation initially. The 22-year-old right-hander has a dynamic fastball-slider combination, one that helped him rack up 108 strikeouts in 112 Double-A innings during the 2015 campaign.

Dodgers acquired RHP Frankie Montas, OF Trayce Thompson, and INF Micah Johnson from the White Sox in the three-team Todd Frazier deal.

Known for his electric fastball, Montas made two starts and five relief appearances with the White Sox down the stretch this past season and posted a 2.97 ERA and 108/48 K/BB ratio over 112 innings in Double-A. He could still make it as a starter, but many see him as a late-inning arm in the long run. He turns 23 in March.

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Dodgers will acquire right-hander Frankie Montas, outfielder Trayce Thompson and infielder Micah Johnson from the White Sox in the three-team Todd Frazier deal.

It was ultimately a three-for-three swap, as the Dodgers gave up Jose Peraza, Scott Schebler, and Brandon Dixon in the deal. Montas is a high-upside arm, even as a possible reliever. Meanwhile, Thompson is capable of playing center field and Johnson replaces Peraza in the Dodgers' infield. Los Angeles continues to collect young talent, perhaps setting them up for another big trade.

Yahoo Sports' Jeff Passan reports that the White Sox and Dodgers are nearing a trade involving prospect right-hander Frankie Montas.

Passan speculates that it "could be pretty big," but he has confirmed that Yasiel Puig is not in the deal. The hard-throwing Montas made two starts and five relief appearances with the White Sox down the stretch this past season and had a 2.97 ERA and 108/48 K/BB ratio over 112 innings in Double-A. He turns 23 in March.

Frankie Montas pitched well but lost to the Tigers on Sunday, giving up only one run in four innings.

Montas allowed two hits and three walks while striking out seven. The lone run scored early on a Nick Castellanos RBI double. The right-hander has hammered in his first major league start on September 23 and finishes the season with a 4.80 ERA, a 1.53 WHIP, and a 20/9 K/BB ratio in 15 major league innings.

Frankie Montas was smacked around for six runs over just three innings against the Tigers Wednesday in his first major league start.

Montas has an electric arm but doesn’t have the command to go with it at this point and it showed in this one. The 22-year-old yielded six hits – including a Victor Martinez home run – while walking a pair and needing 72 pitches to cover his three frames. He was making a spot start due to a doubleheader earlier this week and will now return to the White Sox’ bullpen.

Frankie Montas will make a spot start for the White Sox on Wednesday afternoon in Detroit.

Montas has been working as a reliever since his September 1 promotion and probably isn't stretched out enough to go more than four or five innings. He's not a great fantasy streaming option versus the Tigers.
