Frankie Montas was smacked around for six runs over just three innings against the Tigers Wednesday in his first major league start.

Montas has an electric arm but doesn’t have the command to go with it at this point and it showed in this one. The 22-year-old yielded six hits – including a Victor Martinez home run – while walking a pair and needing 72 pitches to cover his three frames. He was making a spot start due to a doubleheader earlier this week and will now return to the White Sox’ bullpen.

In 112 Double-A innings, Montas owned a 2.97 ERA and 108/48 K/BB ratio. He's a hard-thrower and at just 22 years old, there's still plenty of time for him to cash in on his upside. He worked as a starter in the minors, though it's unknown whether he'll continue to see starts with the White Sox as we hit the home stretch. Double-A to the bigs is a pretty big jump for such a young guy.

White Sox prospect RHP Francellis Montas allowed one earned run and struck out 11 batters in eight innings on Thursday for High-A Winston-Salem.

He gave up two hits and a walk and carried a no-hit bid into the seventh inning. Acquired from the Red Sox last summer in the Jake Peavy trade, Montas, 21, missed all of April of with a knee injury, but has pitched well since returning earlier this month. Through four starts for Winston-Salem this season, the right-hander owns a 1.54 ERA, .171 BAA and 26/4 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 23 1/3 innings.

White Sox acquired RHP Francellis Montas, RHP Jeffrey Wendelken and shortstop Cleuluis Rondon from the Red Sox in the three-team Jake Peavy deal.

The White Sox didn't get any of the Red Sox's farm system gems in the swap; all three guys here are very long-term projects. Montas, 20, was 2-9 with a 5.70 ERA and a 96/32 K/BB ratio in 85 1/3 innings as a starter for low Single-A Greenville. Wendelken, 20, had a 2.77 ERA and a 54/20 K/BB ratio in 65 innings as a reliever in low-A ball. Rondon, 19, was hitting .276/.326/.350 in short-season ball.
