Frankie Montas quieted the Diamondbacks' bats Sunday in his season debut, holding them to one run over six innings in a 2-1 Athletics win.
Montas, who owned 4.39 ERA in nine starts with the A's Triple-A affiliate, dominated an admittedly diluted Diamondbacks lineup, but they all count the same. He gave up just three hits and walked two while punching out seven in the debut, earning the win for his efforts. The A's made the move to give Trevor Cahill another day of rest between starts, but given Montas' success it will be interesting to see how they handle their rotation going forward. It's a situation worth watching, and given Sunday's performance and the 25-year-old's history as a top prospect just a few years ago he could be a speculative add for fantasy owners with a roster spot to burn. Athletics recalled RHP Frankie Montas from Triple-A Nashville.

Montas will make his first even start with the A's and third major league start overall on Sunday versus the Diamondbacks. The 25-year-old has always had a big arm, but he has major control issues and wasn't pitching that well at Nashville (4.39 ERA, 33/13 K/BB ratio over 41 innings). He can be avoided in fantasy leagues.

Frankie Montas will be recalled and start Sunday against the Diamondbacks.

The move will allow an extra day of rest for Trevor Cahill, who missed time with an elbow impingement earlier this month. Montas put up a 7.03 ERA with the A's last season as a reliever, but he's been working as a starter at Triple-A Nashville, owning a 4.39 ERA in nine starts. The start will likely be a one-shot deal, and given his meh line at Triple-A he's not a recommended stream.

Athletics optioned RHP Frankie Montas to Triple-A Nashville.

Montas had a 7.11 ERA in four appearances this spring and also struggled mightily at the major league level in 2017. The 25-year-old former prospect will operate as organizational depth for the A's this season.
Mar 28 - 1:45 PM

Frankie Montas struggled in his second start of spring training on Sunday, giving up two runs in 2 1/3 innings against the Padres.

Montas had a clean first two innings, but struggled to throw strikes in the third and left after giving up two runs in the frame. He's battling for a spot in the back of the rotation, but even if he earns that spot, it'd be impossible to trust the right-hander from a fantasy perspective.
Mar 4 - 4:06 PM

Frankie Montas gave up two runs on three hits in his two innings of work on Tuesday in the Cactus League against the Indians.

Both runs came on a two-run homer from Robert Refsnyder in the second innings. Once one of the more intriguing right-handed pitching prospects in baseball, Montas will turn 25 in March, and he was blistered for a 7.03 ERA in his time with the Athletics in 2017. He's still compelling because of his velocity, but it's unlikely he's anything more than organizational depth at this point.

Athletics optioned RHP Frankie Montas to Triple-A Nashville.

Montas holds a 7.03 ERA over 23 appearances out of the A's bullpen this season. He'll be back in September, if not before.

Frankie Montas is unavailable to pitch Monday in Toronto, as he remains in New York while being delayed due to a visa issue.

It's expected to be resolved soon and Montas will rejoin the team Tuesday. He's posted a 7.28 ERA over 22 relief appearances with the A's this season.

Athletics recalled RHP Frankie Montas from Triple-A Nashville.

Montas holds a 6.91 ERA over 21 relief appearances with the A's this season. He'll provide length in the bullpen.

Athletics optioned RHP Frankie Montas to Triple-A Nashville.

He's clearing out for the return of Sean Doolittle (shoulder). Montas gave up eight runs over his last two relief appearances to earn a trip back to the minors.

Athletics manager Bob Melvin announced Saturday that Frankie Montas has made the Opening Day bullpen.

He made sure to note that the club still views Montas as a starter long-term and that he is not in the competition for save chances. The A's plan to limit his innings this season anyways, so starting him in the bullpen is a good way to do so.

The A's are considering Frankie Montas as a bullpen option, even though they still see him as a long-term starter.

Health has held Montas back these last couple of years, and with just four innings under his belt this spring, he doesn't look like a threat to crack Oakland's rotation right now. He could be an impact reliever in short order, if that's how the A's opt to play it. Still, given that they're not contending this year anyway, it'd seem to make more sense to let him spend the first couple of months in the Triple-A rotation.

Athletics manager Bob Melvin said Wednesday that Frankie Montas will work as a starter this spring.

Montas has been limited to just 16 innings in the minors last season due to a rib issue, so the A's are going to bring him along slowly. While he'll get a look as a starter, he's also an option for the bullpen. Montas was acquired from the Dodgers last August in the trade for Josh Reddick and Rich Hill.

Athletics acquired RHP Frankie Montas from the Dodgers in the Josh Reddick and Rich Hill trade.

Acquired from the White Sox in the three-team Todd Frazier deal over the winter, Montas has been limited to just 16 innings in the minors this season due to a rib issue. Still, he has a big arm and was recently ranked No. 82 on Baseball America’s midseason list. The Athletics could attempt to develop him as a starter, but he has the potential to be an impact bullpen arm.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that Frankie Montas will be sidelined for 4-8 weeks with a broken rib.

Montas had surgery to remove the first rib from his right rib cage back in February. Rosenthal says that this issue is related, as the rib that's broken showed signs of stress but was not cracked at the time. Montas was still in the process of getting stretched out in the minors and realistically probably can't be counted on for much, if anything, in the majors this season after his latest setback.
