Julio Urias tossed 2 2/3 scoreless innings Tuesday in his Cactus League start against the Padres.
Urias wasn't allowed to take the outing any longer than that because he isn't properly stretched out. That is also why he will not be on the Dodgers' active roster to open the 2017 regular season. Look for the young left-hander to arrive in the majors for good sometime in mid-to-late April. Mar 28 - 5:44 PM

Date:

Julio Urias will not be on the Dodgers' Opening Day roster.

Urias is starting on Tuesday and will remain with the Dodgers for their upcoming freeway series against the Angeles. The young left-hander will bide his time in the minors until a spot opens up for him in the starting rotation. It's possible he could open the year in extended spring training after logging just 5 2/3 innings in the Cactus League this spring.
Mar 28 - 1:55 PM

Julio Urias is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Tuesday.

Urias was sent home over the weekend while dealing with strep throat, but he's feeling better now. If all goes well Tuesday, he'll pitch in the back fields on Thursday. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Monday that it's "unrealistic" for Urias to be ready for a starter's workload by Opening Day, so the most likely scenario remains that he'll begin the year in extended spring training. There's some serious fantasy upside here, but the Dodgers are going to be cautious with his workload.
Mar 21 - 1:32 PM

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Monday that it's "unrealistic" for Julio Urias to be ready for a regular starter's workload by Opening Day.

Urias has logged just 5 2/3 innings this spring in the Cactus League and won't be properly stretched out when Opening Day arrives in two weeks. Roberts did note, however, that the Dodgers may be forced into using Urias in shorter starts if their other rotation options aren't ready either. There should be more clarity on this situation in the coming days. Urias, 20, remains an intriguing high-upside fantasy pick for the 2017 season.
Mar 20 - 1:12 PM

Julio Urias returned to Dodgers camp on Monday.

Urias was sent home early on Sunday with symptoms of strep throat. It's not something that will affect his readiness for the beginning of the 2017 regular season, though he may take it a little easy for the next few days.
Mar 20 - 11:13 AM

Julio Urias has been sent home due to a bout with strep throat.

The young left-hander will be re-evaluated later this week. Urias was probably already going to begin the year in extended spring training as the Dodgers looked to manage his workload, and this missed time likely enhances those chances.
Mar 19 - 1:34 PM

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Sunday that the club will not use Julio Urias out of the bullpen this season.

The Dodgers haven't decided yet how they're going to manage Urias' workload this season, but it won't be by making him a reliever for a while. "The idea of putting him in the bullpen, we don't like that," Roberts said. The left-hander is either going to stay back in extended spring training for a while or the Dodgers will give him an extended break around the All-Star Game.
Mar 12 - 1:34 PM

Julio Urias worked two scoreless innings Sunday in a Cactus League start against the Mariners.

He walked one but struck out two and gave up zero hits. Urias should have a spot in the Los Angeles rotation to open the 2017 regular season and he carries tremendous upside at age 20. The left-hander put up a 3.39 ERA and 81/34 K/BB ratio over his first 77 major league innings in 2016.
Mar 5 - 5:08 PM

Julio Urias allowed a run on two hits in his Cactus League debut Tuesday versus the Rockies.

Urias gave up an RBI single to Nolan Arenado in the bottom of the first, but he also struck out Carlos Gonzalez and Ian Desmond in that same frame. The young left-hander has a good shot at opening the 2017 season in the Dodgers' rotation if everything goes fairly smoothly this spring. He might make shorter starts out of the gate in an effort to curb his overall workload, but the high-level fantasy upside is still very much present.
Feb 28 - 6:03 PM

Julio Urias is scheduled to make his first start of the Cactus League season on Tuesday.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said that the club is leaning towards having Urias in the starting rotation to begin the season. He'll simply make shorter starts in an effort to manage his workload, rather than beginning the year in extended spring training. If that's indeed the case, Scott Kazmir, Hyun-Jin Ryu and Brandon McCarthy will all be battling for the final rotation spot, in addition to battling their own health concerns this spring.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said Wednesday that the team has kicked around the idea of having Julio Urias begin the year in extended spring training in an effort to limit his innings.

It's just one of a number of options on the table. Urias logged 122 innings between the majors and the minors in 2016, a significant jump from his previous workload. The 20-year-old threw 80 1/3 innings in 2015 and 87 2/3 innings in 2014. He should still figure prominently in the Dodgers' plans this year, but they are trying to get creative to make sure he'll still be available late into the season.
Jan 25 - 2:33 PM

Jose Urias was hit hard in the fourth inning of Wednesday's 10-2 loss to the Cubs in Game 4 of the NLCS, surrendering four runs in the frame.

Urias held the Cubs scoreless over three innings before they finally broke out of their recent offensive slump. In the fourth, the young southpaw surrendered an RBI single to Willson Contreras and an RBI groundout to Jason Heyward to put the Dodgers down 2-0. Addison Russell subsequently came through with a two-run homer to boost the road team to a 4-0 advantage. Urias struck out four and walked two on the evening, scattering four hits along the way. With the series now knotted at two games apiece, Jon Lester and Kenta Maeda will square off in Game 5 before the series shifts back to Chicago.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts confirmed Monday that Julio Urias will start Game 4 of the NLCS on Wednesday.

It had been the presumption, but Roberts didn't want to make it official until Monday. Urias didn't make a start during the NLDS victory over the Nationals but tossed two scoreless innings in a relief appearance. Roberts will have a quick hook for the rookie if he shows early signs of struggles. At 20 years and 68 days, Urias will be the youngest starter in postseason history.

According to Jon Morosi of MLB Network, Julio Urias is throwing a bullpen session on Sunday and is a "strong option" to start Game 4 of the NLCS against the Cubs.

The Dodgers are rolling with Rich Hill in Game 3 and the writing is certainly on the wall for the young southpaw to get the ball in the fourth game of the series. He has allowed a hit and a pair of walks over two scoreless innings so far this postseason.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said after Monday's NLDS Game 3 loss that he's "not ready to announce" who will start in Game 4 yet.

It's either going to be Clayton Kershaw on short rest or the youngster Julio Urias. From listening to Roberts talk it out it sounds like he might be leaning toward Urias, as he would prefer the young lefty start at home and they're going to have to win two games, anyway. The Nationals, by the way, aren't naming their Game 4 starter yet, either. It will either by Joe Ross or Reynaldo Lopez.
