Athletics placed SS Marcus Semien on the paternity leave list.

Semien and his wife Tarah welcomed a son on Monday night. He should be back for the start of a three-game weekend series Friday night at Busch Stadium in St. Louis.
Aug 24 - 12:21 PM

Marcus Semien (paternity leave) is not expected back until Friday.

Semien was excused from the A's on Monday to welcome a child and will remain absent Tuesday and Wednesday. Oakland kicks off a weekend series in St. Louis on Friday.
Aug 23 - 7:26 PM

Marcus Semien is not in Monday's lineup against the Indians.

Semien is expected to be placed on the paternity leave list soon, though it's not clear if he has officially left the team yet. Chad Pinder will start in his place at shortstop while Max Muncy will play second base.
Aug 22 - 6:31 PM

Marcus Semien finished 4-for-4 with a couple of runs scored Friday against the Mariners.

It seems like most of Semien's hits this year have been homers, but none went for extra bases tonight. He raised his average from .237 to .244. With Trevor Story out, Semien could lead all shortstops in homers this year. He has 23, two more than Corey Seager and three more than Brad Miller. Story had 27 before getting hurt.
Aug 13 - 1:53 AM

Marcus Semien went 2-for-4 with a home run in Saturday's loss to the Indians.

His homer was a bit of an afterthought, a solo dong in the ninth inning of a four-run game, but they all count the same. It was his 22nd of the year, giving him 50 RBI and 50 runs scored. The 25-year-old is hitting .233/.299/.458 overall.
Jul 30 - 11:23 PM

Marcus Semien went 2-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored in Tuesday's win over the Rangers.

Semien connected for a solo dinger off Rangers starter Nick Martinez in the fifth inning, his 21st big fly of the year. That's easily a personal best for the 25-year-old, who will also set a new high for RBI in a season this year. Overall, Semien is hitting .236/.303/.460 with 49 RBI, 49 runs scored and nine steals.
Jul 27 - 12:49 AM

Marcus Semien is not in the Athletics' lineup Friday.

He's just getting a breather. Danny Valencia is also sitting out, as the A's are going with Arismendy Alcantara at shortstop, Yonder Alonso at first base, Khris Davis in the designated hitter spot, Jake Smolinski in center field and Coco Crisp in left.

Marcus Semien pounded his 19th home run of the season in a loss to the Astros on Friday.

He ended the night 1-for-3 with a walk. Semien is on pace to hit well over 30 home runs. He has 19 home runs in 299 at-bats after setting a career high with 15 home runs in 601 at-bats last year.
Jul 9 - 12:05 AM

Athletics manager Bob Melvin acknowledged that Marcus Semien has been playing through a right shoulder injury.

The 25-year-old has yet to miss a game this year and Melvin doesn't plan on resting him until the All-Star break. It's come with a low batting average and a high strikeout rate but Semien's 18 home runs are tied for second-most among big league shortstops.
Jul 7 - 7:17 PM

Marcus Semien delivered a three-run homer and an RBI double against the Giants on Monday.

Semien is up to 15 homers this year. Unfortunately, he hasn't been overly helpful elsewhere, and even with the homers, he has a modest 33 runs scored and 39 RBI while often hitting low in the order. If he can bring his average up some and convince the A's to hit him second or third, he'd have quite a bit more fantasy value.
Jun 28 - 1:14 AM

Marcus Semien went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run in Thursday's 5-4 win over the Angels.

Semien was starter Kendall Graveman's best friend on Thursday, mashing a three-run homer in the second inning to jump the A's to a 3-0 advantage. He has six RBI over his last three games. With 13 home runs on the season, he is now just two away from matching the career-best 15 he socked in 2015.
Jun 24 - 1:19 AM

Marcus Semien went 3-for-4 with a two-run triple and three total RBI in Tuesday's win over the Brewers.

Semien's RBI single in the sixth inning tied the game at 2-2. He would come up again an inning later, this time with the A's holding a 3-2 lead. Semien added to that with a two-run triple. For the season as a whole, he is slashing .238/.305/.430 with 12 homers, 31 RBI and five steals over 70 games played.
Jun 22 - 1:56 AM

Marcus Semien will bat second Monday versus the Rangers.

This will be his third start out of the No. 2 spot this season, but it makes sense with lefty Cesar Ramos on the hill for Texas. Semien owns a .961 OPS vs. southpaws this season compared to a .689 OPS against right-handers. He's an appealing DFS option on Monday.
Jun 13 - 6:02 PM

Marcus Semien socked a solo homer and drew a walk in Friday’s loss to the Astros.

There wasn’t much to crow about for the Athletics on this night. They were down 12-0 when Semien finally got them on the board in the seventh. He’s up to 11 home runs overall, but this was his first since May 16.
