Johnny Monell hit a two-run double in the ninth inning to help the Mets hold off the Giants on Monday.

Neither the Mets nor the Giants seemed very interested in scoring runs after eight innings, but perhaps Monell just wanted to go home. Finishing 1-for-4, he doubled in a pair of runs off of Santiago Casilla to break a scoreless tie. He later came around to score on a Juan Lagares single. Monell had accrued an RBI in only one of his other 20 games this season, back on May 10 against the Phillies. He's batting an unimpressive .189/.250/.243 with four RBI.
Jul 7 - 12:35 AM

Mets recalled C Johnny Monell from Triple-A Las Vegas.

Monell will serve as depth for the Mets while Travis d'Arnaud recovers from a left elbow injury. Kevin Plawecki should draw the majority of the starts at catcher.

Mets optioned C Johnny Monell to Triple-A Las Vegas.

With the injuries that the Mets are facing elsewhere, there is simply no room on the active roster to continue carrying a third catcher. The 29-year-old went 1-for-15 (.067) with four strikeouts while appearing in 11 games for the Mets.
May 24 - 4:53 PM

Mets purchased the contract of C Johnny Monell from Triple-A Las Vegas.

The Mets plan to carry three catchers for the time being, as Monell will serve mainly as a lefty bat off the bench. He's batting .397/.455/.638 with four homers at Las Vegas this season.
May 6 - 8:32 AM

The Mets are expected to promote Johnny Monell from Triple-A Las Vegas prior to Tuesday's game.

It's not clear at this point who he'll replace on the roster, as neither Kevin Plawecki nor Anthony Recker are dealing with any known injuries. Monell is batting .397/.455/.638 with four homers at Las Vegas this season.
May 4 - 4:47 PM

Johnny Monell has three homers this spring after taking the Marlins' Preston Claiborne deep in his lone at-bat Tuesday.

It's too bad for Monell that spring stats don't carry over; he's hit .406 with five homers, 19 RBI and 17 runs scored in 64 at-bats the last three years. Nevertheless, he's going to open the season as Kevin Pwalecki's backup in Triple-A.
Mar 17 - 4:03 PM

Mets signed C Johnny Monell to a minor league contract.

Monell broke the news on his Twitter feed, and Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish reported it includes an invitation to spring training. Monell batted .238/.301/.364 in 206 at-bats between the Orioles' and Dodgers' minor league affiliates this past season.

Orioles sent C Johnny Monell outright to Triple-A Norfolk.

Orioles designated C Johnny Monell for assignment.

The move clears a spot on the O's 40-man roster for utilityman Steve Lombardozzi, who was acquired Monday from the Tigers for non-roster shortstop Alex Gonzalez. Monell, 27, has eight career major league at-bats.

Johnny Monell went 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBI in the Orioles' win over the Twins on Wednesday.

Monell struck out in three of his first four at-bats this spring, but the 27-year-old couldn't miss on Wednesday. Monell stroked two singles to go with his three-run home run off Jared Burton in the third inning. The catcher, who was acquired from the Giants in November, has always been a threat at the plate. If the Orioles can stomach his defense behind it, he could find his way onto the Opening Day roster as backup to Matt Wieters.

Orioles acquired catcher Johnny Monell from the Giants for cash considerations.

The 27-year-old Monell hit .275/.364/.494 as Triple-A Fresno's starting catcher last season, but defense behind the plate has held him back. While the Orioles could consider carrying him as Matt Wieters' backup, they'll likely continue to look at alternatives.
