Rangers designated C Juan Centeno for assignment.

The Rangers needed to clear a roster spot for Carlos Perez, who was claimed off waivers from Atlanta on Wednesday. Centeno hasn't shown much offensively this year, batting just .162 with one homer and three RBI in 37 at-bats. The 28-year-old could stay on as minor league depth if he clears waivers.

Juan Centeno made his third start of the season and finished 1-for-4 with an RBI in Saturday's game against the Blue Jays.

Centeno, who was claimed off waivers from the defending champion Astros, was originally expected to be just a depth player. However, if he can hold his own at the plate and drive in runs while Robinson Chirinos struggles with the twig, it wouldn't take much for Centeno to play a bigger role than previously anticipated.

Rangers claimed C Juan Centeno off waivers from the Astros.

Centeno, 28, is a .235/.289/.339 hitter over 101 games in the majors. He'll provide the Rangers with some additional catching depth going into 2018.

Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports that the Astros have placed Juan Centeno on waivers.

Their hope is that he will pass through waivers unclaimed and accept an outright assignment to Triple-A Fresno, but the 28-year-old catcher might find interest from other teams after batting .311/.354/.383 this past season at the Triple-A level. Centeno could also elect free agency. He played 22 games in the majors in 2017 and was included on the Astros' roster for the ALDS, ALCS, and World Series.

Juan Centeno will be on the Astros' roster for the ALDS.

He made the cut over Max Stassi. Centeno batted just .231/.286/.346 over 22 games during the regular season and will merely act as emergency depth at catcher for the American League West champions in their first-round matchup against the Red Sox.

Juan Centeno passed all of his concussion tests and has been cleared to rejoin the Astros.

While he isn't starting, he's active and in uniform on Thursday. Centeno will provide depth behind the plate over the final few weeks of the regular season.

Juan Centeno has been diagnosed with a mild concussion.

Centeno was lifted from the first half of Saturday's doubleheader against the A's after getting struck in the mask by Jed Lowrie's backswing. The Astros have three other catchers, so Centeno wasn't going to play much even if he was healthy.

Juan Centeno was pulled from the first half of Saturday's doubleheader against the A's after getting struck in the mask by Jed Lowrie's backswing.

He'll likely be put through MLB's concussion protocol. Centeno did not make a plate appearance before getting lifted from the game in the bottom of the second inning. Max Stassi took over at catcher for Houston.

Centeno is being rushed to Tropicana Field for Thursday afternoon's series finale against the Rangers with Evan Gattis (wrist) landing back on the disabled list Thursday morning. Centeno, 27, has batted .265/.324/.441 with two home runs in 37 plate appearances this season at the major league level.

Astros optioned C Juan Centeno to Triple-A Fresno.

Brian McCann is back from the disabled list, so Centeno was no longer needed. The 27-year-old catcher has batted .265/.324/.441 with two home runs in 37 plate appearances this season at the major league level.

Juan Centeno went 2-for-4 with a walk-off RBI single in Sunday's win over the Blue Jays.

Centeno was just called up on Saturday after being down in the minors since the end of May. That move -- which the Astros needed to make with Evan Gattis (concussion) out of action -- paid almost immediate dividends, as Centeno capped off a four-run ninth inning rally with a walk-off RBI single to polish off yet another big Astros comeback (they trailed 6-3 in the frame). There is no fantasy upside, here, but it was a nice moment for the 27-year-old backstop nonetheless.

Astros recalled C Juan Centeno from Triple-A Fresno.

He's taking the place of Evan Gattis who landed on the 7-day concussion DL on Saturday. Centeno appeared in two games earlier this season for the Astros, going 3-for-7 (.429) with a pair of homers.

Astros optioned C Juan Centeno to Triple-A Fresno.

All the 27-year-old did was homer in each of his first two starts for the Astros, but with Brian McCann set to return from the disabled list there was no need to carry a third catcher. He'll continue to provide depth at Triple-A.

Juan Centeno hit a solo homer and reached base three times Tuesday versus the Tigers.

The 27-year-old journeyman was making his first start in the majors this season, as he came up when Brian McCann went on the 7-day concussion DL. Even after the nice night, Centeno might be lucky to get one more start before McCann returns.
