The Phillies hired Bob McClure as pitching coach.
McClure previously served as the pitching coach for the Rockies, Royals, and Red Sox. His last tour of duty, under Bobby Valentine, ended in termination in August 2012 amidst the disintegrating Boston clubhouse atmosphere. Reports suggest that McClure was the leak of clubhouse details that surfaced in the media. Pete Vuckovich, Roger McDowell and Jim Benedict -- and perhaps more -- turned down the job before it was offered to McClure. Thu, Nov 21, 2013 12:15:00 PM

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Phillies have interviewed Rafael Chaves for their vacant pitching coach position.

Chaves used to be the Mariners' pitching coach and is currently the Dodgers' minor league pitching coordinator. The Phillies have been turned down by a few people and, thus, are still scrambling to fill the position.

Phillies assistant hitting coach Wally Joyner has left the organization to pursue other opportunities.

Joyner joined the team in 2013 as an assistant to hitting coach Steve Henderson. It's unclear if he has already secured a job with another organization. Mickey Morandini is the leading candidate to replace him as the assistant hitting coach.

Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times reports that the Phillies interviewed Mariners pitching coach Carl Willis on Friday for their vacancy.

The Mariners manager Lloyd McClendon has yet to announce his plan at the position, so Willis is currently free to pursue any outside opportunities. The Phillies have already been turned down by Roger McDowell, Pete Vuckovich and Jim Benedict this offseason in their search to replace Rich Dubee.

Braves pitching coach Roger McDowell will remain with the Braves and won't be the new Phillies pitching coach, according to Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com.

McDowell isn't under contract with the Braves, but sources tell Salisbury he isn't going anywhere. As for the Phillies, McDowell was believed to be their primary target, so their search continues.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Phillies are targeting Braves pitching coach Roger McDowell to be their pitching coach.

MLB.com's Mark Bowman first raised the possibility of the Phils going after McDowell. The Braves have asked McDowell back, but he's not under contract and seems likely to interview with the Phillies before making a decision.

The Phillies have hired Larry Bowa as bench coach and Pete Mackanin as third base coach.

Both are returning to the organization. Bowa had previous stints as a player, coach, and manager with the club while Mackanin was the bench coach from 2009-2012. The Phillies also announced Tuesday that Steve Henderson will be back as hitting coach while assistant Wally Joyner will not. Juan Samuel, who served as third base coach in 2012, and bullpen coach Rod Nichols are still under consideration to be on the staff for 2014.

Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com reports that the Phillies are close to hiring Larry Bowa as bench coach.

Bowa has a history with Ryne Sandberg, as the pair were traded together from the Phillies to the Cubs in 1982 and played side-by-side in the infield for a brief time. This would be Bowa's fourth tour of duty with the Phillies, as he previously played with the club from 1970-1981, functioned a coach with the team from 1989-1996, and managed from 2001-2004. He last coached in the big leagues in 2010 with the Dodgers.

The Phillies announced Friday that they will not renew the contract of catching coach Mick Billmeyer.

Billmeyer had been a coach in the Phillies since the 2000 season when he became the minor league catching coordinator. The opening creates an opportunity for new manager Ryne Sandberg to begin shaping his own coaching staff.

The Phillies have signed manager Ryne Sandberg to a three-year contract extension with a club option for 2017.

He officially had the interim tag removed from his title Sunday after going 18-16 since taking over for Charlie Manuel. Sandberg has a tough task ahead of him in getting the aging Phillies roster to compete in the National League East.

The Phillies will officially remove manager Ryne Sandberg's interim tag during a press conference Sunday.

He was named interim manager last month after Charlie Manuel left, but the expectation all along was that he was going to land the full-time gig. Sandberg, who managed the Phillies' Triple-A affiliate from 2011-12 before being named the big club's third base coach last winter, has guided the team to an 18-16 record since grabbing the reins.

Mett Gelb of the Philadelphia Inquirer writes that the Phillies' removal of Ryne Sandberg's interim tag is "a mere formality."

Gelb adds that an official announcement could come during the final week of the season. It was surprising that the Phils even used the interim tag when they announced Sandberg would take over for Charlie Manuel, as it was obvious he was destined to eventually land the full-time gig. For what it's worth, Sandberg says he hasn't heard one way or the other. "There hasn't been any indication or any word or anything," Sandberg said. "No, I'm just focused on what I'm doing here and the games to be played, getting the players in there as much as I can, making up a lineup to win a baseball game. I want to win as many games as we can, finish strong, finish on a positive note, a good note, all those things."
