According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, the Reds have picked up manager Bryan Price's option for 2018.
Price is a less bad manager now than when he took over the Reds, and we haven't had the same issue with him this year about prioritizing winning (with a bad team) over developing younger players. Still, it's really remarkable that he'll be getting a fifth year after the lack of success in the first four, even if it's obviously true that no manager was taking these team to the playoffs or even approaching .500. The Reds' real problems start higher up. They're set to finish last in the NL Central for the third straight year. Sat, Sep 2, 2017 06:50:00 PM

Reds manager Bryan Price was ejected for arguing Saturday against the Dodgers.

Price got run in the second inning after protesting a called strike three on Billy Hamilton. It's a miracle Hamilton wasn't tossed himself after showing up home plate Stu Scheurwater. It was Price's first ejection of the year and the 10th of his career. Bench coach Jim Riggleman will step in as manager with Price done for the afternoon.

Bryan Price will return as the Reds' manager in 2017.

There had been some talk of Price being on the hot seat, but the entire coaching staff has been offered contracts to return next season. The club also will have an option on Price for 2018. The Reds are 67-92 in 2016 and 207-276 in three seasons under Price.

Reds pitching coach Mark Riggins has been fired.

He'll take the fall for a pitching staff that has produced a league-worst 5.51 ERA through the first half of the 2016 season. Mack Jenkins has been promoted from bullpen coach to pitching coach, and Triple-A Louisville pitching coach Ted Power will take over Jenkins' old job.

Reds promoted Dick Williams to general manager.

Williams, who has been with the Reds since 2006, will officially have the title of senior vice president and general manager. Meanwhile, former GM Walt Jocketty will remain the Reds' president of baseball operations and oversee the department. "As is the case with any business, it’s critical to have a succession plan in place," Jocketty said in a statement. "Dick has been here for 10 years, he’s learned the business, and we are confident he is ready to take on the GM responsibilities."

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Reds are considering bringing back Bryan Price as manager for 2016.

The last-place Reds are limping to the finish line, with nine straight losses, so Rosenthal notes that things could still change. Barry Larkin has long been rumored as a potential replacement. However, the feeling is that Price isn't fully to blame, as the team has dealt with a number of injuries while trading some key pieces. If he is retained, the team could change a number of his coaches. Pitching coach Jeff Pico could be most vulnerable. Price is under contract through 2016.

Thursday's game between the Reds and Tigers has been postponed due to rain.

No makeup date has been announced, but as the two interleague rivals don't meet again this season, they will need to find a mutual off day. Thursday's starters, Justin Verlander and Mike Leake will presumably be pushed back to Friday.

Buster Olney of ESPN reports that Kevin Towers is expected to join the Reds front office as an assistant to general manager Walt Jocketty.

Towers, who had served as the general manager of the Diamondbacks for the past five seasons before being removed from his position after the 2014 campaign. He's a long-time friend of Jocketty and widely respected around the game, and would make for a terrific addition for the Reds.

The Reds have signed general manager Walt Jocketty to a long-term extension.

The terms of the contract haven't been revealed, but John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer says it's a two-year deal. After making the postseason three out of the previous four years, the Reds have stumbled to a 74-85 record this season amid many injuries. Jocketty didn't say Friday whether the entire coaching staff would be retained, but manager Bryan Price is expected to keep his job.

The Reds have hired Jay Bell as their bench coach, according to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal.

Bell served as a first-time hitting coach with the Pirates in 2013, but he's making the jump to a division rival. Travis Sawchik of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review reports that assistant hitting coach Jeff Branson is a candidate to replace Bell in Pittsburgh.

Reds hired Bryan Price as manager.

Price will receive a three-year deal. Widely regarded as one of the best pitching coaches in the game, this will be his first managerial gig. He has been the pitching coach with the Reds since 2010 and previously held the same role with the Mariners and Diamondbacks. Replacing the recently-fired Dusty Baker, he should be in good position to succeed immediately.
