Red Sox recalled RHP Marcus Walden from Triple-A Pawtucket.

Walden was only in the minors for four days. He had a 3.60 ERA over his first three appearances (three innings) this season out of the Red Sox bullpen.

Walden made three appearances with the Sox, striking out three over five innings with a 3.60 ERA. With Eduardo Rodriguez set to return from the disabled list, he was simply the victim of a roster crunch. Walden should be back up with the Sox at some point in 2018.

Walden posted a sharp 0.64 ERA and 16/4 K/BB ratio in 14 innings this spring in the Grapefruit League. He could prove to be an asset in long relief for Boston.

Marcus Walden blanked the Rays for three innings Wednesday to lower his spring ERA to 0.69.

Walden, who has tolied in the minors for 11 years without ever reaching the majors, has struck out 15 and walked four while allowing one earned run in 13 innings. He's doing his best to make a case to get some early season starts for the Red Sox while pitchers are injured, but he's still likely to open up back in Triple-A.

Walden, 28, wasn't expected to make the Opening Day bullpen. His poor spring didn't help his cause though, registering a 10.50 ERA, 2.67 WHIP and 5/10 K/BB ratio in his six innings. He'll continue to hone his craft in the minor leagues.

Red Sox signed RHP Marcus Walden to a minor league contract.

The 28-year-old did a nice job out of the bullpen in 56 1/3 innings between Double-A Chattanooga and Triple-A Rochester in 2016, compiling a 2.54 ERA, 1.17 WHIP and 33/13 K/BB ratio. Given the talent and depth in the Red Sox bullpen, he's slated to serve as organizational depth unless a rash of injuries strike.

No word yet on the corresponding roster move, but Walden will provide much needed depth to a bullpen that was taxed on Friday with Dustin McGowan lasting just 2 2/3 innings. The 25-year-old posted a 3.71 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 88/50 K/BB ratio over 162 1/3 innings at Double-A New Hampshire in 2013.
