Eugenio Suarez (thumb) has begun taking groundballs and gripping a bat with his left hand.
"I don't throw. I just take the ground balls and put them on the side," Suarez said Tuesday. "I try to grip the bat to see how it feels, but no swings or throwing yet. I will grab the ball and bat and see how much I can squeeze. That's all we're doing right now." The third baseman landed on the disabled list April 9 with a fracture in his right thumb. He's likely to be sidelined through at least early-to-mid May. Apr 17 - 7:46 PM

Date:

Reds placed 3B Eugenio Suarez on the 10-day disabled list with a fractured right thumb.

The injury was the result of being hit by a pitch on Sunday. The Reds have yet to announce an official estimate for his return date. Cliff Pennington will fill in at third base on Monday, though the call has recalled Alex Blandino from Triple-A.
Apr 9 - 3:34 PM

Eugenio Suarez has been diagnosed with a fractured right thumb.

Suarez suffered the injury when he was hit by a Jameson Taillon pitch Sunday. Obviously, he's going to be sidelined for a while. Alex Blandino was lifted from Triple-A Louisville's game Sunday after Suarez was injured, so it appears he might be Suarez's replacement. Top prospect Nick Senzel also has plenty of experience at third base, of course, but he's been playing second at Louisville and it looks like the Reds will keep him in the minors for now.
Apr 8 - 3:39 PM

Eugenio Suarez was lifted from Sunday's game against the Pirates after being hit on the right hand by a pitch.

Suarez stayed in to run after being plunked by a Jameson Taillon pitch in the top of the fourth inning but was replaced at third base for the bottom of the frame. He's surely headed for X-rays and the Reds should have an update on his condition after those results are in.
Apr 8 - 2:47 PM

Eugenio Suarez knocked in five runs, including a go-ahead three run homer in the eighth inning as the Reds topped the Pirates 7-4 on Saturday.

Suarez tied things up with a two-run single in the sixth inning before putting the Reds ahead with his blast off George Kontos in the eighth. The five RBI tied his career-high. Recently signed to a seven-year, $66 million contract, the 26-year-old is batting .308/.419/.654 with two homers and seven RBI through his first seven games this season. He's an underappreciated fantasy option.
Apr 7 - 10:35 PM

Eugenio Suarez went 2-for-5 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored in Saturday's loss to the Nationals.

He drilled a two-run bomb off reliever Enny Romero in the ninth inning of the blowout loss. It was his first home run of the season. Suarez is fresh off signing a seven-year, $66 million contract extension two weeks ago.
Mar 31 - 5:37 PM

Reds signed 3B Eugenio Suarez to a seven-year, $66 million extension with a club option for 2025.

The option for 2025 is for $15 million, and it comes with a buyout for $2 million. Suarez, 27, is coming off his best season as a member of the Reds, hitting 26 homers and driving in 82 runs for Cincinnati in 2017. He'll likely hit in the middle of the order in 2018, and should be a solid -- if not spectacular -- fantasy option over the next few seasons.
Mar 16 - 11:30 AM

C.Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic Cincinnati reports that the Reds will announce an extension with 3B Eugenio Suarez.

Marc Sheldon of MLB.com reports that it's a seven-year deal with a club option for an eighth season. Suarez wasn't eligible for free agency until 2021, so this will likely prolong his time with the club and buy out his remaining arbitration seasons. He's been one of the more underrated third baseman in baseball over the past few seasons, and hit 26 homers with 82 RBI for the Reds in 2017. The move also likely makes Nick Senzel a middle-infielder, which dramatically improves his fantasy propositions. A win-win for all parties involved.
Mar 16 - 11:06 AM

Eugenio Suarez slugged a pair of home runs in a 6-3 Cactus League victory over the Rangers on Friday.

He took Matt Bush deep with a runner aboard in the first inning, then smacked a solo shot off Yohander Mendez in the third frame. Suarez has a .333/.440/.857 line with three homers and five RBI so far this spring. He's been improving rapidly both at the plate and in the field over the last couple years and has blossomed into one of the best all-around third basemen in the game.
Mar 9 - 11:32 PM

Eugenio Suarez lost his arbitration case against the Reds and will receive a $3.75 million salary in 2018.

Suarez requested $4.2 million from the Reds when figures were exchanged last month. He'll still get a nice raise in his first year of arbitration eligibility after posting an .828 OPS with 26 home runs and 82 RBI in 156 games last season while earning $595,000 -- just north of the MLB minimum.
Feb 6 - 6:34 PM

Eugenio Suarez requested $4.2 million and was offered $3.75 million by the Reds when arbitration figures were exchanged on Friday.

The third baseman is eligible for arbitration for the first time. The two sides have been reported to be interested in a multi-year contract extension, so perhaps this arbitration negotiation will lead to something bigger. Suarez has developed into one of the better third basemen in the league both offensively and defensively. He hit .260/.367/.461 with 26 home runs, 87 runs and 82 RBI last year. All of those except for the batting average were career highs.
Jan 12 - 10:54 PM

Zach Buchanan of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports that the Reds are expected to pursue a contract extension with Eugenio Suarez later this offseason.

Buchanan was told by a source close to Suarez -- who is arbitration-eligible for the first time this offseason -- that the third baseman would want the extension to be for at least six years, which he writes "wouldn’t necessarily be an issue for the Reds." If the two sides are unable to gain traction on a long-term deal, Buchanan says that could push the Reds to look to trade Suarez, although it's unlikely that would happen this winter. Top prospect Nick Senzel is a third baseman, although the Reds have discussed moving him to second base or the outfield.

Eugenio Suarez is getting the day off Thursday.

Patrick Kivlehan will start at third base and bat second versus Brewers left-hander Brent Suter. Suarez should be back in there Friday at Wrigley Field.
Thu, Sep 28, 2017 01:22:00 PM

Eugenio Suarez (paternity) is back in the Reds' lineup Friday.

Suarez missed all three games of the series against the Cardinals following the birth of his first child, but he's ready to go for the weekend series versus the Red Sox. He's at third base and batting fifth against Rick Porcello.
Fri, Sep 22, 2017 03:08:00 PM

Eugenio Suarez has been excused from the Reds for the birth of his first child.

That explains why Suarez is not in the Reds' starting lineup Tuesday versus the Cardinals. Patrick Kivlehan will handle third base and bat seventh versus right-hander Jack Flaherty.
