Eugenio Suarez lost his arbitration case against the Reds and will receive a $3.75 million salary in 2018.
Suarez requested $4.2 million from the Reds when figures were exchanged last month. He'll still get a nice raise in his first year of arbitration eligibility after posting an .828 OPS with 26 home runs and 82 RBI in 156 games last season while earning $595,000 -- just north of the MLB minimum. Eugenio Suarez requested $4.2 million and was offered $3.75 million by the Reds when arbitration figures were exchanged on Friday.

The third baseman is eligible for arbitration for the first time. The two sides have been reported to be interested in a multi-year contract extension, so perhaps this arbitration negotiation will lead to something bigger. Suarez has developed into one of the better third basemen in the league both offensively and defensively. He hit .260/.367/.461 with 26 home runs, 87 runs and 82 RBI last year. All of those except for the batting average were career highs.

Zach Buchanan of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports that the Reds are expected to pursue a contract extension with Eugenio Suarez later this offseason.

Buchanan was told by a source close to Suarez -- who is arbitration-eligible for the first time this offseason -- that the third baseman would want the extension to be for at least six years, which he writes "wouldn’t necessarily be an issue for the Reds." If the two sides are unable to gain traction on a long-term deal, Buchanan says that could push the Reds to look to trade Suarez, although it's unlikely that would happen this winter. Top prospect Nick Senzel is a third baseman, although the Reds have discussed moving him to second base or the outfield.

Eugenio Suarez is getting the day off Thursday.

Patrick Kivlehan will start at third base and bat second versus Brewers left-hander Brent Suter. Suarez should be back in there Friday at Wrigley Field.

Eugenio Suarez (paternity) is back in the Reds' lineup Friday.

Suarez missed all three games of the series against the Cardinals following the birth of his first child, but he's ready to go for the weekend series versus the Red Sox. He's at third base and batting fifth against Rick Porcello.

Eugenio Suarez has been excused from the Reds for the birth of his first child.

That explains why Suarez is not in the Reds' starting lineup Tuesday versus the Cardinals. Patrick Kivlehan will handle third base and bat seventh versus right-hander Jack Flaherty.

Eugenio Suarez is not in Tuesday's lineup against the Cardinals.

He's just getting the day off. Patrick Kivlehan will make the start at third base and bat seventh against right-hander Jack Flaherty.

Eugenio Suarez hit a two-run homer on Sunday in the Reds win over Pittsburgh.

It's the 26th homer of the season for Suarez, and it was a two-run shot off of Gerrit Cole in the sixth. Very quietly, the 26-year-old has had a very productive year for the Reds, with a .376 on-base percentage and .480 slugging percentage. You can do a lot worse.

Eugenio Suarez hit a grand slam Wednesday in the Reds' 6-0 win over the Cardinals.

It was his first homer, but Suarez is 7-for-10 with three walks and 21 RBI with the bases loaded this year. On the other hand, he's 1-for-19 with runners on just second and third. The obvious answer is for pitchers to simply start balking whenever he's up with the sacks packed.

Eugenio Suarez went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored Tuesday against the Mets.

He also drew a walk. Suarez is now batting .315 with 12 home runs so far in the second half. Eight of those longballs have come in August.

Eugenio Suarez went 3-for-5 with two homers and five RBI in a losing cause Tuesday against the Cubs.

The big game came at Great American Ballpark, of course. Suarez has hit 19 of his 23 homers in Cincinnati this year (even though he actually has 36 more plate appearances on the road). His OBP is solid both at home (.394) and on the road (.369), so it's not like all his value has come at home. Still, 19 of 23 homers is pretty astonishing.

Eugenio Suarez belted a two-run homer and scored two runs in a win over the Padres.

He took starter Travis Wood over the left field wall with a runner aboard in the third inning. He reached base on an error in the fifth inning and rode home on a Stuart Turner home run. The 26-year-old third baseman has a .255 batting average with 19 home runs and 56 RBI in 112 games.

Eugenio Suarez socked a solo homer and drove in two runs Tuesday in Pittsburgh.

It was an inconsequential blast, as it came in the ninth inning to push the Reds' lead to 9-1, but hey, Suarez will take it. The Cincinnati third baseman has gone deep five times in 19 games since the All-Star break.

Eugenio Suarez went 3-for-5 with a run scored in Thursday's loss to the Marlins.

The Reds actually banged out 10 hits, led by Suarez's three, but they were only able to push across a solitary run in the eighth. The 26-year-old has bounced back from a miserable month of June to bat .275 this month with a handful of games left to be played. In what has been an up and down year, Suarez is now hitting .261/.359/.460 with 16 homers, 51 RBI and 53 runs scored overall.

Eugenio Suarez was responsible for both Reds runs by hitting two solo homers Thursday against the Diamondbacks.

Suarez, who also walked in the contest, had as many homers today as in the previous month combined. He was one of the NL's better regulars through two months, but he's been well below average since. The Reds would be happy to see him get hot again.
