The Twins have successfully petitioned for a fourth option year on Kennys Vargas.
This means that the Twins could stash Vargas in Triple-A again in 2017. The 26-year-old batted .230 with 10 home runs and an .833 OPS over 177 plate appearances this past season. Mike Berardino of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports that he has generated some trade interest. Nov 17 - 7:09 PM

Kennys Vargas went 2-for-5 with a solo home run to help the Twins hold off the Royals 7-6 on Thursday.

Vargas took Royals starter Danny Duffy yard for the solo blast in the sixth inning. He also doubled off the southpaw in the contest. Vargas has now homered in two straight games and has 10 dingers in 44 games overall. He's batted .250/.354/.543 in those 44 games.
Sep 30 - 1:10 AM

Kennys Vargas went 1-for-4 and hit a two-run homer in Wednesday's loss to the Royals.

The sixth-inning blast with Miguel Sano aboard tied the game but the Twins would not score again. Vargas spent most of the season in the minors. He has gotten to play only sparingly in the majors although he has performed quite well when given the chance. He is batting .244/.352/.519 with nine longballs and 19 RBI in just 135 at-bats.
Sep 28 - 11:38 PM

Kennys Vargas hit his eighth homer in 112 at-bats this season Sunday against the Mets.

Vargas has been the Twins' best hitter when he's played this year, but he didn't start in the NL park the previous two days. Along with the eight homers, he has a .277 average, 10 doubles and 22 walks in his 112 at-bats. That's more walks than teammates Trevor Plouffe, Byron Buxton, Kurt Suzuki, Eduardo Escobar, Eduardo Nunez (as a Twin) and Eddie Rosario have in less than half as much playing time.

Twins recalled 1B Kennys Vargas from Triple-A Rochester.

Vargas is hitting .259/.379/.576 with six homers and 13 RBI over 25 games with the Twins this season. He's expected to see time between the DH spot and first base down the stretch.
Sep 6 - 11:13 AM

Twins optioned 1B Kennys Vargas to Triple-A Rochester.

Left-hander Adalberto Mejia was called up in the corresponding move. Vargas got off to a hot start with Minnesota but has slumped badly since the All-Star break (.206 in 68 second-half at-bats). The 26-year-old should have a chance to redeem himself when rosters expand next much.
Aug 20 - 6:42 PM

Starting for the first time in four days, Kennys Vargas hit a pair of homers Thursday in the first game of the doubleheader against the Astros.

Vargas has been terrific, but with Miguel Sano seeing most of his time at DH lately, there just hasn't been a lot of room for him. It's a particularly big problem now that Trevor Plouffe is back, since the Twins aren't willing to simply bench Plouffe (even though they probably should). As a result, Vargas and his 1.040 OPS will likely be out of the lineup more often than not.
Aug 11 - 4:30 PM

Kennys Vargas went 2-for-4 with a walk and scored twice on Saturday.

Both hits were doubles. In the five games since being called up from Triple-A, Vargas has hit .467/.556/1.200 with two home runs in 18 trips to the plate. He had a terrible spring training and got off to a slow start in the minors but has hit well of late. The Twins won't be able to take him out of the lineup until he cools off.

Twins recalled DH Kennys Vargas from Triple-A Rochester.

Minnesota will hope Vargas can provide a spark of power with Trevor Plouffe landing on the disabled list in a corresponding roster move due to a cracked rib. Vargas was batting .255/.353/.435 with 14 home runs and 53 RBI through 82 games this season in Triple-A. He may have some AL-only fantasy appeal, but we wouldn't expect much in the way of consistent production.
Jul 4 - 10:34 AM

Twins optioned DH Kennys Vargas to Triple-A Rochester.

Vargas had just two hits in 24 at-bats this spring, but he wasn't going to make the team regardless after the club signed Byung-Ho Park. He could wind up being trade bait.
Mar 18 - 9:16 AM

Kennys Vargas went 0-for-2 with a strikeout on Wednesday and is 1-for-14 so far this spring.

The Twins would have sold Vargas to Korea over the winter had he wanted to go, but they weren't willing to set him free and try his luck with another major league team. As a result, he's almost certainly Triple-A bound to begin the year. He's behind both Byung-Ho Park and Oswaldo Arcia at DH, and unlike Arcia, Vargas has options remaining.
Mar 9 - 3:52 PM

A person with direct knowledge of the situation told the St. Paul Pioneer Press that Kennys Vargas is drawing interest from at least one team in the Korean Baseball Organization.

The Twins won the blind bid for Korean first baseman Byung-Ho Park earlier in November, which makes Vargas somewhat expendable. The 25-year-old slugger could see his contract sold to an interested party in the KBO, though Twins vice president of player personnel Mike Radcliffe called the early reports "speculative." Vargas showed promise in 2014, hitting .274/.316/.456 with nine homers and 38 RBI across 215 at-bats. His numbers took a dip this last season, though, as he slashed just .240/.277/.349 with five homers and 17 RBI in 175 at-bats (58 games) with the big club.

Twins recalled DH Kennys Vargas from Triple-A Rochester.

There was some optimism about Vargas coming into the year, but he has batted just .245/.277/.365 over 166 plate appearances with the Twins this season. He'll provide some pop off the bench.

Twins optioned DH Kennys Vargas to Double-A Chattanooga.

Vargas had one hit in three at-bats on Wednesday, pushing up his season line to a still-awful .245/.277/.365. The Twins will not announce a corresponding roster move until Thursday, but there's been speculation that they could call up Miguel Sano.

Kennys Vargas had a big night as the Twins routed the White Sox on Monday, finishing 4-for-4 with an RBI single and a three-run home run.

Vargas rapped an RBI single as part of a five-run fourth inning, then drilled a three-run homer to kickstart a five-run sixth inning. Entering the night, Vargas had recorded only six hits in 36 plate appearances since getting recalled from Triple-A. He's batting .248/.283/.379 on the year with five home runs and 15 RBI.
