Reds signed C Tucker Barnhart to a four-year, $15.5 million contract extension with a $7.5 million club option for 2022.

The buyout on the option is $500,000, so he's guaranteed at least $16 million with his new contract. Barnhart had been set for his first year of arbitration eligibility this offseason, but now he's locked up for at least one and possibly two free agent years. The 26-year-old has hit a solid .264/.336/.389 over the last two seasons for the Reds and has rated very well in terms of defensive metrics both years. The Reds owe Devin Mesoraco $13.125 million in 2018 in his last year under contract, but it wouldn't be a surprise to see them try to unload him this winter.
Sep 22 - 9:23 AM

Tucker Barnhart went 3-for-4 with a homer and five RBI on Sunday in a win over the Mets on Sunday.

His homer was a three-run shot off of Hansel Robles to make it 10-5 Reds in the top of the ninth. For the year, Barnhart is now hitting a respectable .272/.351/.399 for Cincinnati.
Sep 10 - 5:09 PM

Reds activated C Tucker Barnhart from the paternity leave list.

Barnhart will be the team's main catcher while Devin Mesoraco (foot) is sidelined. Stuart Turner and Chad Wallach will back up.
Sep 3 - 10:09 AM

Reds placed C Tucker Barnhart on the paternity leave list.

Barnhart will be excused from the club for the next few days to welcome a new member of his family. Chad Wallach has been called up from Triple-A Louisville to help behind the plate.
Aug 31 - 9:41 AM

Tucker Barnhart went 2-for-3 and smoked a three-run homer in a loss to the Padres on Tuesday.

He found a pitch he liked from reliever Jose Torres and deposited it over the center field wall with two aboard in the seventh inning. With Devin Mesoraco injured for most of the last three seasons, Barnhart has taken over as the Reds' primary catcher and has done yeoman's work on both sides of the ball. His stats don't really help his fantasy owners much though. He has a .265 batting average with four home runs and 25 RBI in 250 at-bats.
Aug 8 - 10:36 PM

Tucker Barnhart went 2-for-4 with three RBI and a walk in the Reds' win over the Marlins on Sunday.

Barnhart hit an RBI single in the Reds' two-run second inning and a two-RBI single in the Reds' four-run seventh. He has a .261/.320/.378 batting line with 20 RBI in 75 games this year.
Jul 30 - 4:56 PM

Tucker Barnhart delivered a pinch-hit two-run double in the ninth inning of Tuesday's game at San Diego.

The two-out hit helped the Reds avoid a shutout at the hands of the Padres. It was Barnhart's 12th double of the season, and he now has eight RBI. His playing time is still rather erratic and he cannot be counted upon outside of the deepest of NL fantasy formats.

Apr 9 - 11:19 AM

Tucker Barnhart is absent from the Reds' lineup Thursday.

He's getting a day off with it being a day game after a night game, which is pretty standard for starting catchers. Stuart Turner will be being the plate.
Apr 6 - 10:07 AM

Tucker Barnhart (back) was held out of action again on Saturday as a precautionary measure.

Barnhart was scratched on Thursday due to lower back stiffness and while he feels much improved, the club wanted to play it safe and give him an extra day. He caught a full bullpen session on Saturday and should return to game action on Sunday. Barnhart is expected to open the season in a full time-share with Devin Mesoraco behind the plate.
Mar 11 - 11:49 AM

Tucker Barnhart was scratched from the Reds' Cactus League lineup Thursday with lower back stiffness.

Stuart Turner will start at catcher instead against the Athletics. Reds manager Bryan Price said Barnhart should be ready to return to action over the weekend. It's nothing to worry about here in early March.
Mar 9 - 10:55 AM

Tucker Barnhart (hand) is not in the Reds' lineup Saturday against the Diamondbacks.

It's his second straight absence. Barnhart bruised his hand against the Dodgers earlier this week, though fortunately his X-rays came back negative. Ramon Cabrera will start behind the plate and bat eighth against D'Backs starter Zack Godley. Barnhart is considered day-to-day, though the Reds did call up Raffy Lopez from Triple-A in case the injury lingers.

Tucker Barnhart was scratched from the Reds lineup on Friday due to a sore right hand.

The injury is believed to be very minor and shouldn't cause an extended absence from the lineup. Barnhart could be back behind the dish as early as Saturday.
