Cubs signed LHP Luis Cruz to a minor league contract.

Cruz, 25, was released by the Astros in November after posting a 4.27 ERA and 1.47 WHIP over 116 innings this year in Triple-A. The 5-foot-9 lefty has struggled at the upper levels in the minors, but the Cubs will take a chance on him.

Astros released LHP Luis Cruz.

Cruz had an underwhelming 4.27 ERA and 1.47 WHIP in 116 innings this past season for the Astros' Triple-A team. The 25-year-old lefty has never pitched in the majors, and it probably won't happen in 2016.

Astros optioned LHP Luis Cruz to Triple-A Fresno; re-assigned C Luis Flores to minor league camp.

Cruz was set back by a hand injury during camp, but he had little chance to crack the Opening Day roster, anyway. The 24-year-old will get some more minor league seasoning.

Luis Cruz (hand) will resume throwing off a mound on Tuesday.

Cruz jammed his hand trying to field a ground ball during pitcher's fielding practice on Friday, forcing him to miss a few days of work. He'll be fine, but the lefty is not expected to crack the Opening Day roster.

Luis Cruz was forced to take Saturday off from throwing due to swelling in his pitching hand.

Cruz sustained the injury on Friday when he jammed his hand trying to field a ground ball during pitcher's fielding practice. He's hopeful that he'll be able to play catch on Sunday and resume mound work shortly after.

Astros optioned LHP Luis Cruz to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Cruz, a 5-foot-9 left-hander, was protected from the Rule 5 Draft after he posted a 4.56 ERA and 150/44 K/BB ratio over 130 1/3 innings last season between High-A Lancaster and Double-A Corpus Christi. His secondary numbers were better than the results suggest, so the Astros are hoping the 23-year-old will continue to progress.

Astros purchased the contract of LHP Luis Cruz from Double-A Corpus Christi.

The former ninth-round pick logged a 4.56 ERA and 1.23 WHIP across two levels (High-A Lancaster, in addition to Corpus Christi) this past season. He stands only 5-foot-9, 170 pounds, but he's a 23-year-old lefty that has shown just enough promise for Houston to protect him from inclusion in next month's Rule 5 Draft.
