Dean Anna hit his first major league home run Thursday against the Red Sox.

It was a blast to right field off Clay Buchholz. Anna drew his second start at second base in place of Brian Roberts tonight. He's also started at shortstop once. His playing time will remain pretty limited as long as Roberts and Derek Jeter stay healthy.

Dean Anna made the Yankees' Opening Day roster as a utility infielder.

Anna, 27, batted just .262 this spring but did enough to impress Yankees manager Joe Girardi. The Yanks still have one more decision to make on backup infielders before setting their roster.

Dean Anna went 2-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored in the Yankees' 9-6 defeat of an Astros split-squad on Saturday.

The 27-yearold Anna looked like he might make the Yankees when he was acquired from the Padres in November, but that was before the team re-signed Brendan Ryan and brought in Kelly Johnson, Brian Roberts and Scott Sizemore. Now it'll probably take an injury to someone ahead of him to give him a shot. He's 5-for-13 so far this spring.

Yankees acquired 2B Dean Anna from the Padres for RHP Ben Paullus.

The clubs pulled off the transaction on Wednesday. Anna, who turned 26 earlier this month, posted an impressive .331 batting average and .892 OPS in 2013 for Triple-A Tuscon. A lefty swinger and right-handed thrower, Anna could potentially fill a backup infielder role in the Bronx as soon as the 2014 season. The Yankees added him to the 40-man roster.
