Aaron Barrett (elbow) took part in a simulated game on Tuesday.
Also taking part in that simulated game: Daniel Murphy (knee). Barrett threw to Murphy in the contest, which is a nice surprise considering he wasn't supposed to begin throwing until next month. He's still at least a month away, but it's good to see him making enough progress to throw off a mound. Apr 18 - 6:35 PM

Nationals re-signed RHP Aaron Barrett to a minor league contract.

Barrett suffered a second right elbow injury last year while recovering from Tommy John surgery. He'll work out at the Nationals' spring training facilities in West Palm Beach until he feels strong enough to begin pitching in minor league games. The 29-year-old reliever posted a 3.47 ERA and 84 strikeouts in 70 innings with Washington between the 2014-2015 seasons.

According to Chris Cotillo of SB Nation, the Nationals "remain strongly interested in bringing back" free agent right-hander Aaron Barrett.

Barrett elected to become a free agent in October after being outrighted off the Nationals' 40-man roster. He missed the entire 2016 season while recovering from Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery, but the 28-year-old reliever had a 3.47 ERA and 84 strikeouts in 70 innings between 2014-2015.

Aaron Barrett has elected to become a free agent.

Barrett chose to test the open market rather than accept an outright assignment to Triple-A. The 28-year-old missed the entire 2016 season while rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. He was set to be arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter.

According to Chelsea Janes of the Washington Post, the Nationals placed Aaron Barrett on outright waivers.

Barrett would have been eligible for arbitration for the first time this winter as a Super Two qualifier and the Nationals didn't feel like giving him a salary bump after he missed the entire 2016 season following Tommy John surgery on his right elbow. Barrett fractured that same elbow in July while rehabbing and could miss much of 2017. He had a promising rookie year with Washington in 2014, but it's been a frustrating road since.

Nationals placed RHP Aaron Barrett on the 60-day disabled list.

Barrett underwent Tommy John surgery in September and isn't expected to be ready to pitch until late in the 2016 campaign. This was done as a procedural move to create a spot on the 40-man roster for Chris Heisey.

Aaron Barrett (elbow) will throw from 90 feet on Monday.

Barrett isn't ready for mound work yet so he'll be on flat ground. He'll remain at the team's spring training facility in Viera throughout the regular season. Barrett, who underwent Tommy John surgery in September, is hoping to rejoin the Nationals' bullpen later this year, though 2017 is probably a more realistic goal.

Aaron Barrett (elbow) likely needs Tommy John surgery.

He's being evaluated by Dr. James Andrews to see if there's another elbow procedure he might be able to have instead, but it looks like he'll have to have Tommy John. The surgery would keep him out until the 2017 season.

Aaron Barrett recently visited Dr. James Andrews to get an opinion on his ailing right elbow.

The diagnosis isn't known yet, but Barrett is currently mulling over whether to have surgery or treat the elbow with a platelet-rich plasma injection and rest. Either way, he's done for the season.

Nationals placed RHP Aaron Barrett on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to August 6, with a right elbow sprain.
