Nationals placed RHP Aaron Barrett on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to August 6, with a right elbow sprain.

Barrett was optioned to Triple-A last week, but it was voided after the injury was discovered. It's unknown at this point how long he might be sidelined.

Barrett was lifted from Thursday's contest with the Brewers on account of the biceps strain. In 20 2/3 innings this season, he pitched to a 4.79 ERA and 1.16 WHIP. A timetable for his possible return has not yet been set.

Barrett had a 3.21 ERA and 43/18 K/BB ratio in 33 2/3 innings earlier this season out of the Washington bullpen and then rattled off 10 scoreless appearances after being demoted to Syracuse. He should fare well in a middle relief role down the stretch.

It shouldn't prevent him from being a September call-up for the Nationals. The 26-year-old has posted a 9.45 ERA over 10 appearances in the majors this year.

Barrett allowed one hit and fanned six batters over 4 1/3 scoreless innings during his first stint with the big club earlier this season. Xavier Cedeno was sent down to Triple-A to clear a spot for him on the active roster.

Aaron Barrett whiffed Giancarlo Stanton -- the only batted he faced -- in Thursday's win over the Marlins.

Barrett got Stanton to chase a slider off the plate with two outs in the eighth inning in what was a 2-1 game at the time. The 26-year-old has been awfully impressive in the early going, spinning four shutout innings while striking out six and allowing no hits. Nationals manager Matt Williams has shown that he already trusts Barrett to handle a late-inning role.

Aaron Barrett has made the Nationals' bullpen.

It'll be the first taste of the majors for Barrett, who registered a promising 2.15 ERA and 1.09 WHIP with 69 strikeouts in 50 1/3 innings last season at Double-A Harrisburg. He'll start out in middle relief but could move quickly into a setup role.
