Brian Moran needs Tommy John elbow surgery.

The Angels acquired Moran from the Blue Jays in December's Rule 5 Draft, but he opened the 2014 season on the disabled list and will now be sidelined through the early part of 2015. Moran, 25, owns a 3.06 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and 339 strikeouts in 288 minor league innings.

Brian Moran (elbow) has not progressed to throwing off a mound.

Moran, a Rule 5 pick, was placed on the disabled list at the end of spring training with left elbow inflammation. The 25-year-old left-hander has resumed throwing, but isn't ready for mound-work quite yet. The Angels will keep him stashed on the DL for now.

Angels placed LHP Brian Moran on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to March 21, with left elbow inflammation.

The Angels will stash the Rule 5 pick on the DL until he gets better. The 25-year-old allowed one run in four appearances this spring.

Brian Moran will have his sore right elbow examined Saturday.

It's not clear how long the Rule 5 pick has been nursing the injury, but the Angels seem likely to stash Moran on the disabled list to start the season. The 25-year-old has allowed one run in four appearances this spring.

Blue Jays selected LHP Brian Moran from the Mariners in the 2013 Rule 5 draft; traded him to the Angels for international cap space.

The Angels have made adding young arms a priority in recent days -- acquiring Tyler Skaggs and Hector Santiago in the Mark Trumbo trade -- and Moran falls in line with that pursuit. Moran only works in the mid-80s, but he's been hugely successful in the minor leagues (3.06 ERA and 339/78 K/BB rate over 288 career innings) and most in the industry expect him to stick in the majors this year. He misses bats and throws strikes, which should help him win a left-handed specialist role in the Angels' bullpen this coming season.
