Odrisamer Despaigne gave up five earned runs in four innings Sunday in a loss to the Cardinals.
The Cardinals weren't fooled at all buy Despaigne's sometimes-deceptive stuff, pounding him for five singles and a home run. The right-hander has been really good at times this year, but he's a risky fantasy bet going forward. A date with the Diamondbacks is next. Aug 17 - 5:14 PM

Odrisamer Despaigne fired seven shutout innings, scattering five hits, Tuesday in a victory over the Rockies.

Despaigne turned back the clock in striking out eight. The Cuban defector snuck up on the league while posting a 1.31 ERA and a 0.90 WHIP through his first five starts, but he had struggled with a 7.20 ERA over his last three outings. He won his first two career starts, but had gone 0-3 with a 4.04 ERA in his six starts since. Despaigne's soft but varied arsenal is a good fit in Petco, making him a matchup play in mixed leagues. He gets the Cardinals next time around, on Sunday in St. Louis.
Aug 13 - 1:23 AM

Odrisamer Despaigne was touched up for four runs over 5 2/3 innings but survived to take a no-decision in Wednesday's 5-4, extra-innings win over the Twins.

Despaigne got off to a rough start, serving up a two-run homer in the first before managing to escape a bases-loaded jam in the second. He was better after that, but that's not of much consolation. After a nice start, the Cuban defector has struggled with a 7.20 ERA over his last three starts. He'll try to bounce back next week at home versus the Rockies.
Aug 6 - 5:15 PM

Odrisamer Despaigne was tagged for six runs and nine hits in 5 2/3 innings Thursday in a loss to the Cardinals.

Two lousy outings in a row for Despaigne since he threatened a no-hitter on July 20. This one was a bit better than the previous start, in that he walked just one today after walking five last time out. He still looks like a reasonable play in mixed leagues for now.
Jul 31 - 7:11 PM

Odrisamer Despaigne surrendered five runs -- two earned -- over 3 2/3 innings Saturday in a loss to the Braves.

It was an ugly nosedive back to earth for the Cuban right-hander, who carried a no-hitter into the eighth inning last Sunday versus the Mets. He walked five Atlanta hitters on Saturday and gave up six hits. Despaigne does not have great raw stuff and is not a safe fantasy bet going forward despite his still-sparkling 1.66 ERA.
Jul 26 - 10:45 PM

Odrisamer Despaigne lost a no-hitter with two outs in the eighth inning and took a no-decision, but the Padres walked off winners against the Mets on Sunday.

Despaigne was far from perfect, as he had issued three walks and hit two batters before Daniel Murphy broke up the no-hit bid with a line drive double to left-center in the eighth inning. Murphy later scored the Mets' first and game-tying run on a David Wright single up the middle. Overall, Despaigne allowed just the two hits and three walks while striking out five. He has been fantastic over five starts for the Padres, now carrying a 1.31 ERA, a 0.90 WHIP, and a 17/11 K/BB ratio. Despaigne will take the mound next on Saturday in Atlanta against the Braves.
Jul 20 - 7:49 PM

Odrisamer Despaigne tossed seven innings of two-run ball in a loss Thursday versus the Dodgers.

Despaigne struck out a career-high seven and walked zero but was stuck with his first big league loss anyway. The Cuban right-hander isn't overpowering, but he's begun his major league career with four consecutive quality starts. Despaigne, who should be owned in most formats as long as he's pitching well, is 2-1 with a 1.35 ERA and 0.98 WHIP.
Jul 11 - 12:47 AM

Odrisamer Despaigne tossed six innings of one-run ball in a no-decision Saturday versus the Giants.

Despaigne pitched well for a third straight start since his June 24 promotion, but the punchless San Diego offense didn't offer enough help and Huston Street blew his first save of the season in the ninth inning. Despaigne has a 0.92 ERA so far in the majors. He's worth a flier in some mixed fantasy leagues, although he has a tough matchup next week against the Dodgers.
Jul 5 - 11:15 PM

Odrisamer Despaigne picked up his second victory in as many starts, limiting the Diamondbacks to one run on five hits over 6 2/3 innings on Sunday.

He also issued four walks on the afternoon while striking out two. The only damage against him came when the D'Backs strung together a couple of hits in the first inning, but he was able to keep them at bay the rest of the ballgame. Through two starts, he sports an impressive 0.66 ERA and 0.95 WHIP. While he won't generate many strikeouts (just three thus far), he should have value as a matchup play, especially when pitching at PetCo Park. He'll take on the Giants at home his next time out on Saturday.
Jun 29 - 8:42 PM

In his major league debut, Odrisamer Despaigne fired seven shutout innings, scattering four hits, in a gem versus the Giants on Monday.

Josh Byrnes might be wishing he'd called Despaigne up a few weeks ago right about now. The 27-year-old right-hander became the first Cuban since Luis Tiant (1964) to throw seven or more innings of shutout ball in an MLB debut. Despaigne signed in early May and spent six weeks struggling in the minors, going 1-3 with a 6.03 ERA between Double- and Triple-A. The Padres couldn't afford to be picky, however, entering tonight with a 6-14 record in June and needing a replacement for ace Andrew Cashner (shoulder). Despaigne worked his fastball in the 90-91 range, and baffled San Francisco with his ability to dial back to a mid-70s change and a curveball that at times dropped into the mid-60s. The lithe 6-footer doesn't have a powerful arsenal, but he'll be able to sneak up on some unsuspecting NL offenses with four pitches he'll throw from multiple arm slots. Assuming he hangs around in the rotation, Despaigne would get the Diamondbacks this weekend. He's fit for NL-only leagues.
Jun 24 - 1:06 AM

Padres purchased the contract of RHP Odrisamer Despaigne from Triple-A El Paso.

Despaigne will take the place of Andrew Cashner (shoulder) in the Padres' starting rotation and make his major league debut Monday night against the Giants. The 27-year-old Cuban signed with Padres last month and posted a 6.03 ERA, 1.85 WHIP and 41/18 K/BB ratio over 31 1/3 innings between Double- and Triple-A. He's better left for NL-only fantasy leagues for now.
Jun 23 - 4:04 PM

According to Tim Dirkes of MLB Trade Rumors, the Padres are prepared to recall Odrisamer Despaigne from Triple-A El Paso.

With the struggles that the Padres have had in the rotation, the 27-year-old Cuban right-hander will have an opportunity to stick if he pitches well. He certainly possesses a big arm, but struggled mightily over seven minor league starts, compiling a 6.03 ERA, 1.85 WHIP and 41/18 K/BB ratio over 31 1/3 innings. He's worth a flyer in deep mixed leagues.
Jun 22 - 9:40 PM

Padres pitching prospect Odrisamer Despaigne was knocked around for five earned runs in four innings Sunday in his third Triple-A start at Triple-A El Paso.

Despaigne now has a 7.07 ERA in 14 innings since his late-May promotion to Triple-A. The 27-year-old Cuban right-hander seemed to be on the fast track to the majors after a good spring and strong showing at Double-A San Antonio, but it may be time to pump the brakes a bit.
Jun 9 - 12:14 PM

Padres pitching prospect Odrisamer Despaigne has been promoted to Triple-A El Paso.

Despaigne had a 1.17 ERA and 12 strikeouts in two starts (7 2/3 innings) at Double-A San Antonio. The 27-year-old Cuban right-hander could be an option for the big league rotation soon and may be worth stashing in NL-only fantasy formats. He's still a bit of a mystery, but his velocity readings in workouts this spring were exciting.
May 26 - 2:02 PM

Padres general manager Josh Byrnes said Thursday that pitching prospect Odrisamer Despaigne could be a factor with the major league club soon.

Signed earlier this month to a minor league contract, Despaigne has allowed one run and struck out 12 over his first 7 2/3 innings at Double-A San Antonio. He needs to be built up more before he can handle a starter workload, but it sounds like the Cuban defector could be up with the big club before long. He's not a bad stash in NL-only formats.
