Odrisamer Despaigne turned in an unimpressive performance in Sunday's loss to the Giants, surrendering four runs on five hits over just 3 1/3 innings.
This was Despaigne's first start in over a month. It didn't go well. How poorly did it go? He held a 3-0 advantage entering the bottom of the second inning. In the frame, Ehire Adrianza notched an RBI single, but that paled in comparison to what would come: A three-run homer by Giants starting pitcher Mike Leake. Ouch. Despaigne will likely return to the bullpen, now, to lick the wounds that a 5.79 ERA and 1.38 WHIP tend to inflict on the soul. Sep 13 - 7:13 PM

The Padres have moved Odrisamer Despaigne to the bullpen.

Despaigne was tagged for seven runs over five innings in his last outing to push his ERA up to 5.11 for the season, so the move isn't surprising. Colin Rea will replace him in the rotation.
Aug 9 - 3:00 PM

Odrisamer Despaigne was destroyed in Thursday afternoon's loss to the Brewers, yielding seven runs on nine hits over five innings.

Yikes. The 47-63 Brewers tossed up a run in the first inning, then unleashed back-to-back three-run frames covering the third and fourth innings. Despaigne struck out just one against three walks and now holds a bloated 5.11 ERA and 1.27 WHIP. A home start against the Reds awaits him on the schedule.
Aug 6 - 5:45 PM

Odrisamer Despaigne supplied a quality start in Saturday's win over the Marlins, allowing three runs on five hits over six-plus innings.

Despaigne allowed two runs in the fifth inning on a pair of RBI singles, with an additional run scoring against him in the seventh to finish off his line. On the evening, he struck out five and walked one. While this start was fine, Despaigne's had his issues with consistency throughout the season and currently holds a 4.75 ERA and 1.21 WHIP. A road start against the Brewers is up next on the schedule as the Padres try to remain a relevant baseball team.
Aug 1 - 9:52 PM

Odrisamer Despaigne pitched well in Sunday's victory over the Marlins, hurling six innings of one-run ball.

The right-hander allowed just six hits while striking out five on the afternoon. The only damage against him came on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Ichiro Suzuki in the fifth inning. He'll look to build off of this strong effort when he brings a 4.76 ERA into a rematch against these same Marlins in Miami on Saturday.
Jul 26 - 6:58 PM

Odrisamer Despaigne was hit around to the tune of six runs in five innings, taking the loss versus the Giants on Tuesday.

Despaigne allowed two home runs: a solo shot to Hunter Pence in the second inning and a three-run job to Brandon Crawford in the fourth. He gave up seven hits overall while walking two and striking out only one batter. The right-hander's inability to miss bats has hurt him this year, as he has a miserable 4.98 ERA with a 1.26 WHIP and a 48/19 K/BB ratio over 90 1/3 innings. Despaigne will try to get back in the win column for the first time since May 31 when he finishes a homestand against the Marlins.
Jul 22 - 1:07 AM

Odrisamer Despaigne pitched well in a no-decision against the Cardinals on Saturday, allowing just one run on four hits over his five frames.

The right-hander punched out three and walked just one on the afternoon. He has done a serviceable job as a replacement for the injured Brandon Morrow, posting a 4.75 ERA and 46/17 K/BB ratio in 83 1/3 innings. He'll look to get back in the win column on Friday when he takes on the Rangers in Texas.
Jul 4 - 4:57 PM

Odrisamer Despaigne struggled in a losing effort against the Diamondbacks on Sunday, allowing five runs (four earned) on three hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Despaigne punched out six on the afternoon and didn't issue a walk. All of the damage against him came via the long ball, with Welington Castillo blasting a three-run homer in the second inning and David Peralta adding a solo shot in the third. Despaigne will carry a disappointing 4.94 ERA into Saturday's start against the Cardinals in St. Louis.
Jun 28 - 9:33 PM

Odrisamer Despaigne struggled early in Wednesday's loss to the A's, surrendering four runs in the first inning and ultimately lasting six-plus innings.

Despaigne ran into trouble out of the gate, allowing hits to five of the first seven batters. The big blow in the inning came when Billy Butler socked a three-run homer off the 28-year-old right-hander. He allowed just two over his next five-plus innings, but the damage was already done. Despaigne had tossed quality starts in four of his last five outings, but Wednesday's game was certainly not that. Until Brandon Morrow is able to return to the rotation, Despaigne will continue to hold value in deeper NL-only formats, though owners shouldn't expect miracles with his 4.66 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 35/14 K/BB ratio in 67 2/3 innings. A road start against the Giants is up next on the docket.
Jun 18 - 1:10 AM

Odrisamer Despaigne allowed two runs -- one earned -- in 6 1/3 innings Friday in a no-decision against the Dodgers.

Despaigne almost matched Clayton Kershaw, with only an unearned run doing him in. He's turned in quality starts in four of his last five outings, and it looks like he'll be of use in NL-only leagues for a while longer following Brandon Morrow's setback.
Jun 13 - 2:12 AM

Odrisamer Despaigne took a loss, yielding four runs in six innings as the Padres dropped Sunday's game against the Reds 4-0.

All of the damage done against Despaigne came via the bat of Jay Bruce. He hit a solo homer in the second inning and a three-run shot in the sixth, accounting for all four runs. Despaigne served up nine hits overall, but walked none and struck out three. The 28-year-old has pitched better as of late, but is a risky proposition outside of NL-only leagues. Despaigne will bring a 4.72 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, and 28/12 K/BB ratio over 55 1/3 innings into a home start against the Dodgers.
Jun 7 - 3:43 PM

Odrisamer Despaigne delivered another terrific outing in Sunday's victory over the Pirates, allowing just one run on seven hits over eight strong innings.

The right-hander racked up four strikeouts on the evening while allowing just one base on balls. The lone blemish on his evening was a solo homer off the bat of Gregory Polanco in the eighth inning. After two disastrous outings to begin the season, Despaigne appears to have righted the ship and will look to further improve upon a 4.56 ERA and 1.26 when he squares off against the Reds in Cincinnati on Saturday.
Jun 1 - 12:05 AM

Odrisamer Despaigne held the Angels scoreless over six innings of work but got a no-decision as the Padres won in 10 innings on Tuesday.

Despaigne scattered five hits -- all singles -- without issuing a walk and striking out five. The Angels only had a runner reach scoring position three times and they, obviously, failed each time. Despaigne's most recent two starts have been much better than his first two starts after rejoining the rotation in early May but he still carries a lackluster 5.23 ERA with a 1.31 WHIP and a 21/11 K/BB ratio in 41 1/3 innings. Despaigne matches up against the Pirates at home in his next start.
May 27 - 1:38 AM

Odrisamer Despaigne yielded two runs on six hits across six innings in a 3-0 loss to the Cubs on Thursday.

Across the way, Kyle Hendricks was painting a complete game shutout, so Despaigne had little chance in this one. He didn't pitch poorly, striking out four and walking two. Now 2-3 with a 6.11 ERA and 1.39 WHIP, Despaigne is just keeping Brandon Morrow's spot warm.
May 21 - 11:28 PM

Odrisamer Despaigne was pounded for seven runs in three innings by the Nationals on Friday.

Despaigne had a couple of nice starts last month, but he's been positively lit up his last two times out. Maybe some of it is the irregular schedule. His previous start, when he gave up eight runs, came on eight days' rest. This one came on seven days' rest. Despaigne might head back to the bullpen now or possibly even Triple-A.
