Odrisamer Despaigne (oblique) will be shut down for the next week.

Despaigne tweaked his oblique during an appearance on Thursday. It shouldn't affect his availability for the start of the season as long as he can avoid a setback.

Marlins claimed RHP Odrisamer Despaigne off waivers from the Orioles.

Despaigne was designated for assignment 10 days ago by the O's. The 29-year-old right-hander has a 5.60 ERA this season in the majors and a 4.84 ERA for his career. He'll work in a mop-up role with Miami.

The move clears a 40-man roster spot for Brian Duensing, who was activated off the 60-day disabled list Monday. Despaigne carries a 5.60 ERA this year in the majors.

He'll absorb the roster spot left by Matt Wieters, who left the team for a few days to go on paternity leave. Despaigne had mixed results during his last stint in Baltimore, logging a 4.81 ERA over 15 outings.

Orioles acquired RHP Odrisamer Despaigne from the Padres for RHP Jean Cosme.

Despaigne posted an ugly 5.80 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, and 69/32 K/BB ratio in 125 2/3 innings last season for the Padres, but he carries three minor league options and gives the O's some much-needed organizational pitching depth. The 28-year-old right-hander will probably open the 2016 season at Triple-A Norfolk, unless he can secure a long-relief role with a strong showing this spring. He does have experience as a starter too.

Odrisamer Despaigne turned in an unimpressive performance in Sunday's loss to the Giants, surrendering four runs on five hits over just 3 1/3 innings.

This was Despaigne's first start in over a month. It didn't go well. How poorly did it go? He held a 3-0 advantage entering the bottom of the second inning. In the frame, Ehire Adrianza notched an RBI single, but that paled in comparison to what would come: A three-run homer by Giants starting pitcher Mike Leake. Ouch. Despaigne will likely return to the bullpen, now, to lick the wounds that a 5.79 ERA and 1.38 WHIP tend to inflict on the soul.

The Padres have moved Odrisamer Despaigne to the bullpen.

Despaigne was tagged for seven runs over five innings in his last outing to push his ERA up to 5.11 for the season, so the move isn't surprising. Colin Rea will replace him in the rotation.

Odrisamer Despaigne was destroyed in Thursday afternoon's loss to the Brewers, yielding seven runs on nine hits over five innings.

Yikes. The 47-63 Brewers tossed up a run in the first inning, then unleashed back-to-back three-run frames covering the third and fourth innings. Despaigne struck out just one against three walks and now holds a bloated 5.11 ERA and 1.27 WHIP. A home start against the Reds awaits him on the schedule.
