Odrisamer Despaigne held the Diamondbacks to one run over five innings in Thursday's Cactus League start.
Despaigne allowed seven hits and two walks, but was able to dance out of trouble for the most part. He racked up four strikeouts in the effort. The right-hander is battling Brandon Morrow for the No. 5 spot in the Padres' starting rotation. He owns a 2.12 ERA with an 11/6 K/BB ratio over 17 innings this spring, out-pitching Morrow thus far. Odrisamer Despaigne started his Cactus League season on the right foot on Friday, firing a pair of scoreless innings against the White Sox.

The 27-year-old right-hander scatted two hits and a walk while punching out two on the afternoon. It truly speaks to the depth of the Padres rotation that Despaigne is forced to compete for a rotation spot this spring after compiling a 3.36 ERA and 1.22 WHIP over 96 1/3 innings in 2014.

Odrisamer Despaigne (lat) has been shut down for the season.

Despaigne threw a bullpen session Tuesday with no issues with his right lat, but the Padres have decided to play it safely and go ahead and shut him down. That means that Robbie Erlin will get another start on Sunday in San Francisco. Despaigne's solid rookie season ends with a 3.36 ERA over 16 starts.

Odrisamer Despaigne (lat) threw a pain-free bullpen session on Tuesday.

Despaigne came out of his last start with a sore late, with an MRI showing "action" in the area, according to Padres manager Bud Black. However, the righty appears to have bounced back well and could start on Saturday in San Francisco. "For him, it’s ‘I don’t want to miss a start,’" Black said. "It’s a pride thing."

The Padres are unsure whether Odrisamer Despaigne (lat) will be able to make his final start of the season.

Despaigne is nursing a sore right lat. He's responded well to treatment and will play catch Monday, but the Pads might ultimately decide not to push him. Despaigne holds a 3.36 ERA over 16 starts with San Diego.

Odrisamer Despaigne, who shut out the Giants for seven innings Friday, has soreness in his right lat area.

The Padres will probably let Despaigne's side session determine whether he'll make his final scheduled start Wednesday against the Rockies. That's a nice matchup for him, coming at home, but he looks like a risky play right now.

Odrisamer Despaigne limited the Giants to two hits over seven innings in the Padres' 5-0 victory Friday.

It must have been a Petco Park start: Despaigne improved to 3-1 with a 1.83 ERA in eight home starts, compared to 1-6 with a 5.31 ERA in eight road starts. Unfortunately, it's currently unclear whether he'll make his last start Wednesday at home against the Rockies or Thursday on the road against the Giants. He'd be worth playing in mixed leagues versus the Rockies, but not if he's starting in San Fran. Hopefully, the Padres will settle the matter prior to Monday.

Odrisamer Despaigne lost again Sunday, giving up five runs -- three earned -- over 5 2/3 innings against the Diamondbacks.

Despaigne gave up six hits and three walks, striking out just two in the outing. He actually pitched fairly well outside of the third inning, when the Diamondbacks put up all five runs. The loss was his fourth straight to drop him to 3-7 with a 3.63 ERA. Despaigne will try to stop the slide when he faces off with the Giants on Friday.

Odrisamer Despaigne was lit up for seven runs -- six earned -- over 4 1/3 innings in Monday's loss to the Dodgers.

Despaigne punched out three and issued three free passes. He came into this game hot, having logged a 1.29 ERA in his last two starts. But it's the same old story with Despaigne: He came into this game with a 2.11 ERA at home, and a 4.45 ERA on the road. He shouldn't be trotted out in fantasy leagues outside of deep NL-only formats while pitching outside of Petco. The rookie right-hander (3-6, 3.55 ERA) takes on the Diamondbacks in Arizona this weekend. We'd stay away.

Odrisamer Despaigne tossed seven innings of one-run ball, scattering four hits, in a no-decision Tuesday across from the Diamondbacks.

Despaigne punched out four and declined to issue a free pass, continuing to prove he's a sneaky fantasy matchup play in the right circumstances -- the right circumstances, of course, being in the spacious confines of Petco Park. He came into this game 2-1 with a 2.25 ERA at Petco, a bit better than his 1-4 road record with a 4.45 ERA (six starts apiece). The rookie right-hander, now 3-5 with a 3.06 ERA, has a precarious matchup in Coors Field, the anti-Petco, on Sunday. Stay away, unless you're an NL-only owner without a better option.

Odrisamer Despaigne was touched up for four runs -- three earned -- over five innings in Friday's loss to the Diamondbacks.

It's fair to wonder if Despaigne is turning into a pumpkin in front of our eyes. After all, he went 2-2 with a 1.66 ERA over his first six starts, and proceeded to allow three earned runs or more in four of his last five outings, with tonight's start the only time he's given up less than four. Despaigne gives hitters a lot of looks and a varied arsenal of pitches, but unfortunately his armaments don't singe bats, leaving him open to opponents who are ready for offerings without chomp. The hope is that Petco will mask his weaknesses long-term, making him a usable NL-only piece. Despaigne (3-4, 3.44 ERA) hosts Milwaukee next week.

Odrisamer Despaigne gave up five earned runs in four innings Sunday in a loss to the Cardinals.

The Cardinals weren't fooled at all buy Despaigne's sometimes-deceptive stuff, pounding him for five singles and a home run. The right-hander has been really good at times this year, but he's a risky fantasy bet going forward. A date with the Diamondbacks is next.

Odrisamer Despaigne fired seven shutout innings, scattering five hits, Tuesday in a victory over the Rockies.

Despaigne turned back the clock in striking out eight. The Cuban defector snuck up on the league while posting a 1.31 ERA and a 0.90 WHIP through his first five starts, but he had struggled with a 7.20 ERA over his last three outings. He won his first two career starts, but had gone 0-3 with a 4.04 ERA in his six starts since. Despaigne's soft but varied arsenal is a good fit in Petco, making him a matchup play in mixed leagues. He gets the Cardinals next time around, on Sunday in St. Louis.

Odrisamer Despaigne was touched up for four runs over 5 2/3 innings but survived to take a no-decision in Wednesday's 5-4, extra-innings win over the Twins.

Despaigne got off to a rough start, serving up a two-run homer in the first before managing to escape a bases-loaded jam in the second. He was better after that, but that's not of much consolation. After a nice start, the Cuban defector has struggled with a 7.20 ERA over his last three starts. He'll try to bounce back next week at home versus the Rockies.

Odrisamer Despaigne was tagged for six runs and nine hits in 5 2/3 innings Thursday in a loss to the Cardinals.

Two lousy outings in a row for Despaigne since he threatened a no-hitter on July 20. This one was a bit better than the previous start, in that he walked just one today after walking five last time out. He still looks like a reasonable play in mixed leagues for now.
