Ronny Cedeno went 3-for-4 with a three-run homer Wednesday in the rout of the Mariners.

Marwin Gonzalez's hot start has cut into Cedeno's playing time, but he made a bid for more at-bats with his first homer today. It'd be best for the Astros if Gonzalez solidified his hold on the starting job and turned Cedeno into a utilityman.
Apr 24 - 5:10 PM

Ronny Cedeno is starting at shortstop Wednesday against the Rangers.

Marwin Gonzalez, who broke up Yu Darvish's perfect game bid on Tuesday with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, is back on the bench. Meanwhile, Matt Dominguez is back at third base while Brett Wallace plays first and Carlos Pena moves back to the DH spot. Jason Castro is also back behind the plate after serving as the DH on Tuesday.

Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow indicated Sunday that Ronny Cedeno will be the club's starting shortstop.

Marwin Gonzalez will also see plenty of time at short, but it will be Cedeno that receives the bulk of the playing time. Tyler Greene will not make the Opening Day roster and the club will look to trade him since he's out of options. Cedeno was released by the Cardinals last week, but it didn't take him long to find a job and he lands in a spot where he'll see more playing time.

Astros signed INF Ronny Cedeno.

The deal is only pending a physical. Cedeno, 30, was cut by the Cardinals on March 19. He'll provide depth behind Tyler Greene and Marwin Gonzalez at shortstop.
Mar 23 - 9:16 PM

Ronny Cedeno is close to signing with the Astros, according to Brian McTaggart of MLB.com.

The 30-year-old middle infielder was cut by the Cardinals earlier this week but took little time to catch on with another team, it seems. He won't affect Jose Altuve's playing time at second base, but he may prove to be a more attractive option at shortstop than the Astros current options, Tyler Greene and Marwin Gonzalez.

Cardinals released INF Ronny Cedeno.

The Cardinals brought Cedeno aboard this winter on a one-year, $1.15 million contract, but they have decided to go in another direction with their bench now that Pete Kozma is expected to fill in for Rafael Furcal at shortstop. Matt Carpenter is the favorite to start at second base while Daniel Descalso will likely serve as a backup middle infielder and Matt Adams will function as a left-handed bat off the bench. Cedeno shouldn't be out of a job for long, though.
Mar 19 - 3:48 PM

Ronny Cedeno has obtained his work visa and will report to Cardinals' camp Saturday.

Cedeno is the last of the Cardinals' position players to report. The 29-year-old signed a one-year, $1.15 million contract this offseason and is expected to function as insurance for Rafael Furcal.
Feb 16 - 9:18 AM

Ronny Cedeno is expected to arrive late to Cardinals' camp due to visa issues.

It's not known how long he'll need to wait in his native Venezuela. Cedeno signed a one-year, $1.15 million contract with the Cardinals over the winter as is expected to function as insurance for starting shortstop Rafael Furcal.
Feb 12 - 12:26 PM

Cardinals signed INF Ronny Cedeno to a one-year, $1.15 million contract.

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reported the contract details. Cedeno could max out at $2 million if he reaches certain performance bonuses. The 29-year-old was signed with a backup role in mind, but he offers an experienced alternative to the injury-prone Rafael Furcal.
Jan 28 - 4:48 PM

According to FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal, the Cardinals have reached a one-year deal with Ronny Cedeno.

The financial terms have not been disclosed. Cedeno posted a decent .259/.332/.410 batting line with four homers and 22 RBI in 186 plate appearances last season for the Mets. He could be pushed into a starting role in St. Louis if Rafael Furcal again struggles to stay healthy.
Jan 28 - 3:54 PM

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman writes that free agent Ronny Cedeno "appears headed to" the Cardinals.

No word yet on contract terms. Cedeno hit .259/.332/.410 with four homers and 22 RBI in 78 games last season for the Mets. The 29-year-old would serve as a backup in St. Louis behind injury-prone shortstop Rafael Furcal.
Jan 28 - 3:16 PM

CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that the Cardinals are among the teams interested in Ronny Cedeno.

It would be a pretty good landing spot from Cedeno's perspective, as the Cards have some uncertainty at second base and have an injury risk in Rafael Furcal at shortstop. Cedeno put up a decent .259/.332/.410 batting line over 78 games last season with the Mets but sports an uninspiring .247/.290/.357 slash over his career.
Jan 25 - 3:10 PM

Ronny Cedeno (hamstring) popped out as a pinch-hitter in Monday's loss to the Phillies.

It was Cedeno's first appearance in a game since last Wednesday due to right hamstring tightness. He should be fine moving forward.
Tue, Sep 18, 2012 08:27:00 AM

Ronny Cedeno left Wednesday's game with a tight right hamstring.

He's likely day-to-day. With Daniel Murphy nursing some back tightness, the Mets are running short on middle infielders. Neither injury is serious, though.
