Rangers optioned RHP Nick Martinez to Triple-A Round Rock.
The wheels have fallen off for Martinez over his last three starts. He's lost all three and has seen his ERA skyrocket from 2.76 to 3.43. With Matt Harrison (back) close to coming off the disabled list, the Rangers needed to kick someone out of their starting rotation. The struggling right-hander has allowed a home run in six of his last eight starts. He should be back with Texas later this season. Jul 2 - 3:52 PM

Nick Martinez pitched well against the Orioles but faltered late and lost, giving up four runs (three earned) in 6 2/3 innings on Wednesday.

Martinez had allowed one run on a Jimmy Paredes home run through five innings, but allowed a run on a ground out in the sixth and a two-run home run to J.J. Hardy in the seventh before departing. He allowed seven hits overall with a walk and five strikeouts. Aside from a pair of drubbings suffered in June, Martinez has had a terrific 2015 campaign, sporting a 3.43 ERA with a 1.37 WHIP and a 57/34 K/BB ratio over 97 innings. He'll make a home start versus the Diamondbacks next.
Jul 1 - 9:30 PM

Nick Martinez was hit extremely hard by the Blue Jays, and regression, on Friday as he allowed eight runs on nine hits over his six innings of work.

Martinez walked four and struck out a pair on the night. The Jays jumped on him immediately in this one, with the first three batters reaching safely and riding home on a grand slam off the bat of Edwin Encarnacion. He was able to settle in a bit afterwards, but the damage had been done. After a strong start to the season that was basically smoke and mirrors, Martinez has been slaughtered twice in five June starts, seeing his ERA rise from 2.03 to 3.39. He'll hope for better results on Wednesday against the Orioles in Baltimore.
Jun 26 - 9:38 PM

Nick Martinez gave up three runs -- two earned -- over six innings Saturday in a loss to the White Sox.

Martinez walked three and yielded six hits, though none of them went for extra bases. The 24-year-old right-hander will carry a shiny 2.77 ERA into his next start on the road against a dangerous Blue Jays offense.
Jun 20 - 5:25 PM

Despite allowing just three runs over seven innings to the Twins on Sunday, Nick Martinez was saddled with a no-decision.

Martinez struck out five and walked two in the contest. He coughed up two runs in the first inning thanks to a solo homer by Brian Dozier and an RBI double by Eduardo Nunez. The final run against him came home on a triple by Shane Robinson in the sixth inning. Martinez holds a 2.71 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and a 48/26 K/BB ratio in 78 1/3 innings and will tango with the White Sox in Chicago next Friday.
Jun 14 - 6:15 PM

Nick Martinez kept the Athletics off the board over six innings, earning his fifth win on Tuesday.

Martinez relented only one hit, though he did walk three. He also struck out three. Josh Reddick led off the fourth inning with a double, accounting for that one hit, but was stranded. Martinez was torched in his last start, but has otherwise been a godsend in the Rangers' rotation, sporting a 2.65 ERA with a 1.30 WHIP and a 43/24 K/BB ratio over 71 1/3 innings. He'll match up with the Twins at home next.
Jun 10 - 1:16 AM

Nick Martinez lasted only 3 1/3 innings, allowing seven runs and taking the loss as the Rangers dropped Wednesday's game to the Rangers, 9-2.

The White Sox stormed for six runs in the second inning, including a two-run home run from Jose Abreu. Martinez allowed nine hits, walked two, and hit a batter while striking out five. It's an outlier start in what has been a terrific 2015 campaign, as Martinez still owns a 2.89 ERA with a 1.36 WHIP and a 40/21 K/BB ratio in 65 1/3 innings. He'll aim for redemption in a road start against the Athletics next week.
Jun 3 - 11:18 PM

Nick Martinez finally took his first loss after yielding two runs in seven innings Thursday against the Red Sox.

It was another remarkably solid start for Martinez, but we're still thoroughly unimpressed by his stuff. There's no taking away his 2.03 ERA through 10 starts, but he's going to start to fade.
May 28 - 11:22 PM

Nick Martinez cruised to an easy victory against the Yankees on Saturday, allowing two runs on five hits over his seven innings.

Martinez racked up five strikeouts on the afternoon while walking just two, both of which came in his first inning of work. While most of the advanced metrics continue to point to severe impending regression, all Martinez has done is post a 4-0 record, 1.96 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 30/17 K/BB ratio. While he still isn't an every start recommendation in mixed leagues, he should be considered a streaming option for Thursday's matchup against the struggling Red Sox.
May 23 - 4:13 PM

Nick Martinez pitched wildly against the Indians on Sunday, walking five while allowing one run over five innings.

Martinez did strike out six in the contest, but he threw just 57 of his 103 pitches for strikes and couldn't make it past five innings. The lone run on his line came when he served up an RBI double to Michael Brantley in the fifth inning. Martinez has a 1.88 ERA and a 1.25 WHIP. Even when he's allowing runners on base, not many of them are scoring. He'll try to pitch more efficiently when he heads to Yankee Stadium for an afternoon start next weekend.
May 17 - 6:05 PM

Nick Martinez allowed four runs -- three earned -- over 6 1/3 innings in Tuesday's no-decision against the Royals.

Martinez was cruising along until the sixth inning, when the Royals put up three runs on three hits, an error and a sacrifice fly. He still registered a quality start despite not getting the win, giving him six quality starts in seven outings this year. Martinez remains 2-0 with a 1.88 ERA heading into a start against the Indians on Sunday.
May 13 - 12:08 AM

Nick Martinez was lifted after allowing three runs in 4 2/3 innings Thursday against the Rays.

Martinez was spotted a 5-0 lead tonight, but he gave up four hits and a walk in the fifth, causing the Rangers to pull him while he was one out away from qualifying for the victory. It's Martinez's second straight subpar outing, though three of the five runs he allowed Saturday against the A's were unearned. The Rangers have still won all six of his starts, but that streak is due to end soon.
May 7 - 11:22 PM

Nick Martinez allowed five runs (two earned) over six innings in Saturday's win over the A's.

Martinez didn't factor into the decision here, as the Rangers pulled out the victory in the 10th inning. In his time on the mound, the 24-year-old right-hander struck out two without walking a batter. Martinez had allowed just one run heading into the seventh inning, but he unraveled after an Elvis Andrus fielding error and would, at one point, hit Josh Phegly with the bases loaded to force in a run. Martinez now holds a minuscule 0.84 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP, plus a 13/8 K/BB ratio. Needless to say, we don't think this is sustainable. He will attempt to continue throwing up smoke and mirrors when he takes to the road against the Rays in his next start.
May 3 - 1:12 AM

Nick Martinez did not allow a run in Sunday's extra-innings win over the Angels.

Over his six innings on the mound, Martinez scattered seven hits and walked two. He added a pair of strikeouts to complete the line. This was Martinez's second shutout outing of the season. He wouldn't factor into the decision, though, as the Rangers would need extras to cap off the 5-4 win. Through four starts, Martinez holds a microscopic ERA of 0.35, a slightly more visible WHIP of 1.12 and an 11/8 K/BB ratio covering 26 innings. These numbers are not sustainable, but we'll let him enjoy it while it lasts. He'll try to continue to baffle the universe when he takes on the A's at home in his next start.
Apr 26 - 9:01 PM

Nick Martinez was solid in a start against the Diamondbacks on Tuesday, giving up one run in six innings, but took a no-decision in the Rangers' win.

Martinez scattered five hits and a walk while striking out three. The D'Backs scored their only run in the second inning on a Nick Ahmed ground out to plate Yasmany Tomas. Martinez has been a bright spot for the Rangers. Over his first three starts, he has a 0.45 ERA with a 1.00 WHIP and a 9/6 K/BB ratio in 20 innings. Martinez will have to deal with a tough Mariners lineup at home in his next start.
