Nick Martinez turned in his roughest outing of the spring on Tuesday, surrendering seven runs (six earned) on eight hits over 4 1/3 innings against the Diamondbacks.
Martinez also issued three free passes while striking out two. Even with the abomination, he still owns a 4.20 ERA and 11/4 K/BB ratio over 15 innings in Cactus League play. He'll open the season as the fifth starter in the Rangers rotation but is unlikely to carry any mixed league fantasy value, especially pitching half of his games in Arlington. Mar 31 - 10:55 PM

Nick Martinez has won the fifth spot in the Rangers' rotation.

The news was expected and was officially announced by manager Jeff Banister on Sunday. Martinez posted an ordinary 4.55 ERA with just 77 strikeouts over 140 1/3 innings last season but boasts a 0.84 ERA this spring. He's not recommended for fantasy purposes.

Nick Martinez recorded four strikeouts while spinning six scoreless frames Thursday against the Rockies.

He yielded five hits (four of them were singles) while walking one. It's a performance that just might be enough to wrap up the fifth spot in the rotation for Martinez, who now boasts a microscopic 0.84 ERA this spring. He's competing primarily with Nick Tepesch for the job.

Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News believes that Nick Martinez leads the competition for the Rangers' No. 5 starter job.

He cautions that "nothing is decided" but thinks that Martinez is the "front runner." Martinez's main competitors for the gig are Nick Tepesch, Anthony Ranaudo and Lisalverto Bonilla. The 24-year-old made 24 starts for Texas last season, posting a 4.55 ERA with just 77 strikeouts over 140 1/3 innings overall.

Nick Martinez allowed two runs over 5 2/3 innings in Sunday's loss to the Athletics.

Making his final start of the year, Martinez gave up just four hits without walking a batter. The A's got to him for two runs in the second inning and his counterpart, Sonny Gray, threw a complete-game shutout, saddling Martinez with the loss. The 24-year-old certainly wasn't expected to contribute 140 1/3 innings this season, and he ends the year 5-12 with a 4.55 ERA. Better days should be ahead for Martinez.

Nick Martinez threw 6 2/3 scoreless innings, giving up just five hits, and the Rangers held on to beat the Astros 2-1 on Tuesday.

Martinez has slowly gotten better since his early-season woes, and Tuesday was his best effort yet. Martinez gave up just one extra-base hit, a double, among his five hits allowed, and the right-hander didn't walk a batter. The win improved him to 5-11 and lowered his ERA to 4.61. Martinez will have one more start with which to make an impression, starting the Rangers' season finale against the Athletics Sunday.

Nick Martinez yielded two runs and three hits in 5 2/3 innings Thursday in a victory over the A's.

Martinez threw just 43 of his 79 pitches for strikes, walking three, but the A's couldn't rally after spotting the Rangers four runs in the first. The 24-year-old Martinez improved to 4-11 with a 4.85 ERA. That comes with an unimpressive 70/55 K/BB ratio and 18 homers allowed in 128 innings.

Nick Martinez saw his record drop to 3-11 after allowing four runs (two earned) in six innings of work as the Rangers suffered a 7-3 loss to the Angels on Thursday.

The Angels did their damage in the second and third innings, scoring twice in each frame. Martinez gave up four hits and a walk while striking out three in the effort. His rookie campaign has not gone very well, as he'll take a 4.93 ERA, 1.55 WHIP, and 68/52 K/BB ratio into a start in Oakland against the Athletics on Wednesday.

Nick Martinez allowed one run over 5 1/3 innings but settled for a no-decision Sunday against the Astros.

Martinez did well to keep the Astros at bay, scattering six hits and three walks before exiting. Still, he couldn't pick up his fourth win of the year. The 24-year-old has had a rough go of it since being pressed into action, owning a 5.14 ERA through 110 1/3 innings. He'll face the Mariners on Friday.

Nick Martinez struggled versus the Mariners, allowing five runs on six hits over five innings in Tuesday's loss.

He walked four and recorded zero strikeouts in the ugly outing. After not recording more than three punchouts in any of his first 11 starts, Martinez had whiffed 23 across his last 22 frames coming into tonight. Safe to say the good vibes have vanished. The rookie right-hander falls to 3-10 with a 5.31 ERA. Martinez pitches in Houston on Sunday.

Nick Martinez limited the Marlins to two runs over six innings in Wednesday's 5-4 victory.

He permitted six hits and two walks while recording a career-high seven strikeouts. After not recording more than three punchouts in any of his first 11 starts, Martinez has whiffed 23 across his last 22 frames. He posted decent strikeout totals in the minors, so perhaps the 24-year-old is starting to figure it out. He'll get the Mariners on the road next.

Nick Martinez pitched decently in a losing effort against the Angels on Friday, surrendering four runs on six hits over his six innings of work.

Martinez punched out six on the evening while walking just one. Most of the damage came in the fifth inning, where Kole Calhoun launched a three-run homer. Martinez has struggled for most of the season, compiling a 5.27 ERA, 1.61 WHIP and 50/41 K/BB ratio over 94 innings. He should continue to be avoided in fantasy leagues for Friday’s start against the Royals.

Nick Martinez limited the Astros to two runs on five hits over five innings in Sunday's victory.

Martinez walked two and struck out six on the afternoon. The win was just his second victory of the season and his first since May 24. He's got a bright future, but the right-hander is just 2-8 with a 5.22 ERA and shouldn't be relied upon for fantasy purposes. He'll take on the Angels on Friday.

Nick Martinez yielded five runs in five innings Monday in a loss to the White Sox, dropping him to 1-8.

Ideally, Martinez would be in the minors right now. He still might be sent down for a spell if Derek Holland makes it back this month. The Rangers have lost each of his last nine starts, and he's currently sporting a 38/38 K/BB ratio in 83 innings.
Tue, Aug 5, 2014 12:40:00 AM

Nick Martinez held the Yankees scoreless over 5 1/3 innings but took a no-decision as the Rangers needed 14 innings to lose by a 2-1 margin.

Martinez stymied the Yankees, limiting them to only three hits and a walk while striking out three. He left with one out in the sixth, and 67 pitches, after walking Brett Gardner. Martinez's stats aren't pretty, as he owns a 4.73 ERA, 1.62 WHIP, and 32/32 K/BB ratio. He'll try to improve them all when he takes on the Athletics at home on Sunday.
