Nick Martinez allowed five runs (two earned) over six innings in Saturday's win over the A's.
Martinez didn't factor into the decision here, as the Rangers pulled out the victory in the 10th inning. In his time on the mound, the 24-year-old right-hander struck out two without walking a batter. Martinez had allowed just one run heading into the seventh inning, but he unraveled after an Elvis Andrus fielding error and would, at one point, hit Josh Phegly with the bases loaded to force in a run. Martinez now holds a minuscule 0.84 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP, plus a 13/8 K/BB ratio. Needless to say, we don't think this is sustainable. He will attempt to continue throwing up smoke and mirrors when he takes to the road against the Rays in his next start. May 3 - 1:12 AM

Nick Martinez did not allow a run in Sunday's extra-innings win over the Angels.

Over his six innings on the mound, Martinez scattered seven hits and walked two. He added a pair of strikeouts to complete the line. This was Martinez's second shutout outing of the season. He wouldn't factor into the decision, though, as the Rangers would need extras to cap off the 5-4 win. Through four starts, Martinez holds a microscopic ERA of 0.35, a slightly more visible WHIP of 1.12 and an 11/8 K/BB ratio covering 26 innings. These numbers are not sustainable, but we'll let him enjoy it while it lasts. He'll try to continue to baffle the universe when he takes on the A's at home in his next start.
Apr 26 - 9:01 PM

Nick Martinez was solid in a start against the Diamondbacks on Tuesday, giving up one run in six innings, but took a no-decision in the Rangers' win.

Martinez scattered five hits and a walk while striking out three. The D'Backs scored their only run in the second inning on a Nick Ahmed ground out to plate Yasmany Tomas. Martinez has been a bright spot for the Rangers. Over his first three starts, he has a 0.45 ERA with a 1.00 WHIP and a 9/6 K/BB ratio in 20 innings. Martinez will have to deal with a tough Mariners lineup at home in his next start.
Apr 22 - 12:53 AM

Nick Martinez improved to 2-0 after limiting the Angels to one unearned run in seven innings in the Rangers' win Tuesday.

Martinez is on a roll as he blanked the Athletics over seven innings in his season debut on Thursday. The Angels scored their only run against him in the seventh thanks in part to a rare throwing error from Adrian Beltre. On the evening, Martinez gave up five hits, walked three, and struck out one. He'll take his flawless ERA to Arizona to face the Diamondbacks next.
Apr 14 - 11:43 PM

Nick Martinez delivered an outstanding performance in Thursday’s victory over the Athletics, scattering four hits and a pair of walks over seven shutout innings.

Martinez also racked up five strikeouts on the afternoon. Although this effort is certainly encouraging, remember that the right-hander came into the day sporting a career 4.55 ERA and 1.46 WHIP over 140 1/3 innings. He’s not the type to get crazy and spend a bunch of money on in free agent bidding this weekend. He’ll look to carry over this fine effort when he takes on the Angels in Arlington on Tuesday.
Apr 9 - 6:11 PM

Nick Martinez turned in his roughest outing of the spring on Tuesday, surrendering seven runs (six earned) on eight hits over 4 1/3 innings against the Diamondbacks.

Martinez also issued three free passes while striking out two. Even with the abomination, he still owns a 4.20 ERA and 11/4 K/BB ratio over 15 innings in Cactus League play. He'll open the season as the fifth starter in the Rangers rotation but is unlikely to carry any mixed league fantasy value, especially pitching half of his games in Arlington.
Mar 31 - 10:55 PM

Nick Martinez has won the fifth spot in the Rangers' rotation.

The news was expected and was officially announced by manager Jeff Banister on Sunday. Martinez posted an ordinary 4.55 ERA with just 77 strikeouts over 140 1/3 innings last season but boasts a 0.84 ERA this spring. He's not recommended for fantasy purposes.
Mar 29 - 2:15 PM

Nick Martinez recorded four strikeouts while spinning six scoreless frames Thursday against the Rockies.

He yielded five hits (four of them were singles) while walking one. It's a performance that just might be enough to wrap up the fifth spot in the rotation for Martinez, who now boasts a microscopic 0.84 ERA this spring. He's competing primarily with Nick Tepesch for the job.
Mar 26 - 11:43 PM

Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News believes that Nick Martinez leads the competition for the Rangers' No. 5 starter job.

He cautions that "nothing is decided" but thinks that Martinez is the "front runner." Martinez's main competitors for the gig are Nick Tepesch, Anthony Ranaudo and Lisalverto Bonilla. The 24-year-old made 24 starts for Texas last season, posting a 4.55 ERA with just 77 strikeouts over 140 1/3 innings overall.

Nick Martinez allowed two runs over 5 2/3 innings in Sunday's loss to the Athletics.

Making his final start of the year, Martinez gave up just four hits without walking a batter. The A's got to him for two runs in the second inning and his counterpart, Sonny Gray, threw a complete-game shutout, saddling Martinez with the loss. The 24-year-old certainly wasn't expected to contribute 140 1/3 innings this season, and he ends the year 5-12 with a 4.55 ERA. Better days should be ahead for Martinez.

Nick Martinez threw 6 2/3 scoreless innings, giving up just five hits, and the Rangers held on to beat the Astros 2-1 on Tuesday.

Martinez has slowly gotten better since his early-season woes, and Tuesday was his best effort yet. Martinez gave up just one extra-base hit, a double, among his five hits allowed, and the right-hander didn't walk a batter. The win improved him to 5-11 and lowered his ERA to 4.61. Martinez will have one more start with which to make an impression, starting the Rangers' season finale against the Athletics Sunday.

Nick Martinez yielded two runs and three hits in 5 2/3 innings Thursday in a victory over the A's.

Martinez threw just 43 of his 79 pitches for strikes, walking three, but the A's couldn't rally after spotting the Rangers four runs in the first. The 24-year-old Martinez improved to 4-11 with a 4.85 ERA. That comes with an unimpressive 70/55 K/BB ratio and 18 homers allowed in 128 innings.
Thu, Sep 18, 2014 07:22:00 PM

Nick Martinez saw his record drop to 3-11 after allowing four runs (two earned) in six innings of work as the Rangers suffered a 7-3 loss to the Angels on Thursday.

The Angels did their damage in the second and third innings, scoring twice in each frame. Martinez gave up four hits and a walk while striking out three in the effort. His rookie campaign has not gone very well, as he'll take a 4.93 ERA, 1.55 WHIP, and 68/52 K/BB ratio into a start in Oakland against the Athletics on Wednesday.
Thu, Sep 11, 2014 11:47:00 PM

Nick Martinez allowed one run over 5 1/3 innings but settled for a no-decision Sunday against the Astros.

Martinez did well to keep the Astros at bay, scattering six hits and three walks before exiting. Still, he couldn't pick up his fourth win of the year. The 24-year-old has had a rough go of it since being pressed into action, owning a 5.14 ERA through 110 1/3 innings. He'll face the Mariners on Friday.
Sun, Aug 31, 2014 06:23:00 PM

Nick Martinez struggled versus the Mariners, allowing five runs on six hits over five innings in Tuesday's loss.

He walked four and recorded zero strikeouts in the ugly outing. After not recording more than three punchouts in any of his first 11 starts, Martinez had whiffed 23 across his last 22 frames coming into tonight. Safe to say the good vibes have vanished. The rookie right-hander falls to 3-10 with a 5.31 ERA. Martinez pitches in Houston on Sunday.
