Athletics prospect right-hander Grant Holmes (shoulder) will throw a bullpen session on Monday.
Holmes has been slowed with a shoulder issue in A's camp, but he's making tangible progress. Acquired from the Dodgers as part of the Rich Hill/Josh Reddick deal, Holmes posted a 4.49 ERA and 150/61 K/BB ratio over 148 1/3 innings with Double-A Midland in 2017. He turns 22 later this month. Athletics pitching prospect Grant Holmes (shoulder) will throw on flat ground Sunday.

The young right-hander has been battling some shoulder soreness in camp but is ready to resume throwing. Holmes was acquired from the Dodgers in the Rich Hill/Josh Reddick deal two trade deadlines ago.

Athletics prospect Grant Holmes gave up one run in eight innings on Sunday for Double-A Midland.

The run was unearned, and Holmes allow just one hit and one walk while striking out five. Calling his 2017 season inconsistent is quite the understatement. When he was at his best, he showed two strikeout pitches in his heater and curve, and he missed plenty of bats. When he wasn't at his best, he did not. He's just 21-years-old so there's no real rush, but Holmes will have to show more consistency if he's going to reach his lofty ceiling.

Athletics prospect Grant Holmes gave up nine runs on 12 hits on Thursday for Double-A Midland.

After pitching well on Sunday, Holmes really struggled to locate on Thursday, and the results showed. He's striking out more than a hitter an inning, but he didn't even provide that in his last outing, striking out just two in his four innings of work. There's plenty of upside in his right arm, but right now, Holmes isn't close to being a contributor at the highest level.

Athletics prospect Grant Holmes pitched well on Sunday for Double-A Midland.

Holmes scattered seven hits and allowed just two runs, walking one hitter and striking out nine. Acquired in the Josh Reddick/Rich Hill deal last summer from the Dodgers, Holmes has struggled to command his stuff since moving to Oakland, but it's clearly good stuff. His ability to miss bats is unquestioned, so if he can throw strikes like he did Sunday, he has a chance to be part of someone's rotation.

Athletics prospect Grant Holmes pitched four shutout innings on Wednesday for Double-A Midland.

Holmes allowed just one hit on the afternoon, while walking just one and striking out six in the four innings. This was easily his best outing of the year, as the former Dodger prospect hadn't had much success coming into the day. With a 60-grade fastball/curve combination and feel for missing bats, more starts like this should come soon.

Athletics acquired RHPs Grant Holmes, Jharel Cotton, and Frankie Montas from the Dodgers for OF Josh Reddick and LHP Rich Hill.

Holmes, a first-round pick from 2014, is the big get in the deal for Oakland. The 20-year-old has posted a 4.02 ERA and 100/43 K/BB ratio over 105 1/3 innings this season with High-A Rancho Cucamonga and probably has a better chance of sticking as a starter than Cotton or Montas. He was recently ranked No. 60 on Baseball America’s midseason list.

Dodgers RHP prospect Grant Holmes matched a career-high with nine strikeouts Sunday in a no-decision for High-A Rancho Cucamonga.

He scattered four hits and two runs over six innings while allowing just one walk. The 2014 first-round pick is third in the California League with 58 strikeouts this year. Holmes has allowed two runs or fewer in each of his last five starts, trimming his ERA from 3.67 to 3.17 over that span. The 20-year-old is still walking too many hitters (19 free passes) but that's something most young pitchers struggle with.

Dodgers prospect RHP Grant Holmes struck out four batters over four scoreless innings on Thursday for Low-A Great Lakes.

He allowed just two hits in the outing but also walked five. Holmes has been outstanding this year in his full-season debut at Great Lakes, pitching to a 2.94 ERA, 1.38 WHIP, 5.3 BB/9 and 11.8 K/9 in 64 1/3 innings (15 starts). The 19-year-old right-hander has been particularly sharp of late, with 13 scoreless frames and 17 strikeouts over his last three starts. Holmes has confirmed this season that he has the pure stuff to be an impact starter, but it’s also clear that his control and command will need time to develop.

Dodgers right-handed pitching prospect Grant Holmes struck out five over five shutout innings, scattering two hits and one walk for rookie-level Ogden on Wednesday.

Holmes primarily employs a low-to-mid-90s fastball and a power curveball that is already above-average to shut down batters. His first start was rough, but his bounceback outing from Wednesday is a great sign. The Pioneer League is one of the most hitter-friendly leagues in professional baseball, and he could have inflated statistics as a result. Holmes' third pitch, a change-up, is the definition of a work in progress. He rarely threw his change-up before turning pro, and he will need a lot of work before he has a chance to reach the major leagues.

Dodgers prospect RHP Grant Holmes has allowed just one hit and struck out nine batters through first six innings of his professional career.

Holmes, the No. 22 overall pick in the 2014 draft, has dominated in both outings for the Rookie-level Dodgers of the Arizona League. The 18-year-old right-hander struck out five batters in two hitless innings in his professional debut and then followed it with four more strikeouts over four one-hit innings his next time out. If Holmes develops as expected, then it might not be long until he's viewed as one of the biggest steals of this year's draft.

Dodgers signed first-round pick RHP Grant Holmes.

The deal is pending a physical. He's expected to receive above the allotted slot bonus for the No. 22 pick of $1.9805 million. A high school right-hander, Holmes has a fastball that already touches the upper-90s. He could be special if he can find some secondary pitches to go with the heater.

High school right-hander Grant Holmes was selected by the Dodgers 22nd overall in the 2014 draft.

Holmes is a right-hander with a top-notch fastball in the high-90s. He doesn't have a whole lot to go with it yet, but he'll continue to polish up his curveball and changeup in the pros.
