Justin Bour went 0-for-3 on Monday and is hitting just .200 in 55 at-bats this spring.
Bour does have an 11/9 K/BB ratio, which is pretty nice, but he's has more GIDPs (five) than extra-base hits (four). The Marlins want Bour playing every day this year and he figures to be solid enough against righties, but he needs to hit quite well to justify getting starts at first base versus lefties. Justin Bour took Noah Syndergaard deep in Monday's loss to the Mets.

The Marlins want Bour to be their everyday first baseman this year, even though it'd hardly be any sort of challenge to find a better option against lefties. It's just that they want to go with a short bench so that they can utilize an eight-man bullpen. Bour is 6-for-29 with two homers right now.

Marlins manager Don Mattingly said Monday that Justin Bour will be the club's everyday first baseman this season.

"We think there’s a lot in the tank with this guy," Mattingly said Monday. "He brings fear to the lineup." Bour has usually been platooned in the past, as he has batted an ugly .223/.273/.291 in his career versus left-handed pitching. That line will have to improve if Bour is to keep the Marlins from finding a platoon mate again, but it appears he'll at least enter 2017 with a chance to show he can hit lefties. "This is a guy who has an opportunity," Mattingly said. "We think he’s getting better."

The Marlins are open to giving Justin Bour more at-bats against left-handed pitching.

That might not be a good thing for fantasy owners. While Bour has only logged 110 plate appearances against lefties in the majors, he owns a .223/.273/.291 batting line with zero homers. Chris Johnson was the primary alternative at first base against lefties last season, but he's currently a free agent and the Marlins haven't decided how they'll handle things in 2017. "There still is a lot of offseason left," said Marlins president of baseball operations Michael Hill. "We will continue to monitor the market and see what's out there."

Justin Bour (ankle) is starting at first base and batting sixth Wednesday versus the Phillies.

It'll be his first start since July 2, when he suffered a high right ankle sprain. Bour is slashing .268/.350/.526 with 15 homers and 46 RBI in 69 games this season.

Marlins activated 1B Justin Bour from the 60-day disabled list.

Bour has been sidelined since July 2 with a high right ankle sprain, but he's finally ready to make his return. The Marlins will likely ease him back into things as a pinch-hitter before playing him in the field again.

Marlins manager Don Mattingly indicated Monday that Justin Bour (ankle) is on the verge of being activated.

Bour was initially listed as a reserve on Monday's lineup card, but wasn't officially activated. Still, it's a sign that he's getting close. "It’s getting to the point where we feel like we want to activate him, and just have him available," said Mattingly. Bour has been sidelined since July 2 with a high right ankle sprain. He'll likely be eased back into things as a pinch-hitter for a while before making a return to the field.

Justin Bour (ankle) could be activated from the disabled list sometime next week.

Bour's recovery from a high right ankle sprain has come along painfully slowly, but he's felt good after a two-week shutdown period. He resume baseball activities last week and will hit against Wei-Yin Chen (elbow) in a simulated game on Friday. Bour will give the Marlins a big weapon against right-handed pitching once he's ready to go.

Justin Bour (ankle) has resumed baseball activities.

Bour was shut down for two weeks after having a setback with his high right ankle sprain, but he resumed hitting and throwing on Wednesday. The first baseman is feeling better but didn't want to put a timetable on his return. "I can't give a time. I wish I could," Bour said. "I made the mistake before of having a time set out in my mind, and I was wrong."

Marlins transferred 1B Justin Bour from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

It's a procedural move that won't affect Bour one way or the other. He's been out with a sprained ankle since early July and there's still no timetable for his return. Chris Johnson and Xavier Scruggs will continue to man first in his absence.

Marlins president of baseball operations Michael Hill said during an appearance on 940 WINZ on Tuesday that there's "no timeline" for Justin Bour (ankle) to return.

Bour was originally expected to return from the disabled list 10 days ago, but progress from his high right ankle sprain has been slow. At this point, a return in September is more realistic. Derek Dietrich and Chris Johnson will continue to share playing time at first base.

Justin Bour (ankle) is not expected to return before September.

Bour's recovery from a high right ankle sprain has come along more slowly than expected, as he hasn't played in a rehab game in over a week. Derek Dietrich will continue to see the bulk of the playing time at first base.

Justin Bour (ankle) isn't sure if he'll be able to rejoin the Marlins during the team's current homestand.

Bour was originally expected to be activated from the disabled list last Friday, but he's not quite ready yet. "It's very frustrating not to be playing and helping the team win," Bour said. "High-ankle sprains normally take six to eight weeks. I'm a little over four. I'm still technically ahead of schedule, so I'm trying to look at the positive of it." The slugging first baseman has been sidelined since the beginning of July with a right ankle sprain.

Justin Bour (ankle) was not activated from the disabled list Friday.

He had been set to return from his ankle injury Friday but evidently isn't ready just yet. The Marlins should have more on Bour's status before long.

Justin Bour (ankle) is due to be activated from the disabled list Friday.

He'll play back-to-back games with Triple-A New Orleans on Tuesday and Wednesday before getting the official go-ahead. Bour has been on the disabled list since the beginning of July with a right ankle sprain.
