Non-roster invitee Felix Pie has played himself into serious consideration for a reserve outfielder job on the Pirates' Opening Day roster.
Despite the fact that he made his Major League debut in 2007, Pie is still only 28-years-old. He's hitting .308 with two homers, eight RBI and a pair of steals in 22 games this spring, while playing tremendous defense in the outfield. They're only likely to keep one or two of Pie, Brad Hawpe and Alex Presley, but Pie has certainly done everything in his power to earn the opportunity. Mar 22 - 8:48 PM

Pirates signed OF Felix Pie to a minor league contract.

The deal includes a spring training invite and incentives for plate appearances if the former top prospect makes the major league roster. Pie, who turns 28 in February, batted .285/.338/.549 with six home runs, 51 RBI and 16 stolen bases in 96 games with the Braves' Triple-A affiliate this season. He hasn't appeared in the majors since 2011 with the Orioles.

Felix Pie has elected free agency.

Remarkably, though he's already played in 11 professional seasons, Pie will be just 28-years-old when the 2013 season begins. He hit a solid .285/.338/.459 with six homers, 51 RBI and 16 steals in 96 games for Triple-A Gwinnett and should generate a fair amount of interest on the free agent market.

Braves signed OF Felix Pie to a minor league contract.

Pie was hitting .360 with three homers and 12 RBI in 13 games for the Camden Riversharks of the independent Atlantic League. He's been sent to Triple-A Gwinnett, where he'll provide outfield depth for the Braves.

Indians released OF Felix Pie.

Pie batted .303 (10-for-33) with one double, one triple and four RBI this spring, but it wasn't enough to snag a bench spot. The former top prospect will hope to latch on elsewhere.

Felix Pie is back in the Indians' lineup Wednesday against the Giants.

Pie exited Sunday's Cactus League game after crashing into the center-field wall, but he was able to avoid serious injury. The 27-year-old is competing for a reserve outfielder job this spring.

Felix Pie is day-to-day with "general stiffness."

Pie was removed from Sunday's Cactus League game with what were originally diagnosed as concussion-likely symptoms after running into the outfield wall. But he did not suffer a head injury, and should be able to resume his quest for an Opening Day bench spot later this week.

Felix Pie was forced from Sunday's game with concussion-like symptons.

Pie ran into the outfield wall chasing a fly ball and remained on the ground for several minutes before being escorted to the clubhouse. Manager Manny Acta said Pie passed initial concussion tests but will undergo further testing this week.

Indians signed OF Felix Pie to a minor league contract.

He'll get an invite to spring training and can earn up to $1 million if he makes the team and hits his performance bonuses. If he doesn't make the Opening Day roster, he can request his release. Pie has managed just a .249/.298/.374 batting line with 17 homers and 20 steals over 964 career major league at-bats but will turn just 27 in February and still has a shot to at least be a useful extra outfielder.

Former Orioles OF Felix Pie has elected to become a minor league free agent.

The former top prospect is in need of a fresh start. Pie is a terrific athlete and has put up nice minor league numbers, but he's managed just a .249/.298/.374 batting line with 17 homers and 20 steals over 964 career major league at-bats. He'll have to settle for a minor league deal with someone but could easily make a team as a fourth or fifth outfielder. Pie will turn 27 in February.

Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports that Felix Pie is expected to accept an assignment to Triple-A Norfolk.

Pie cleared waivers after being designated for assignment earlier this week, but he has the right to reject a minor league assignment. The 26-year-old outfielder would give up the remainder of his $985,000 salary for this season if he declares free agency, so he is expected to stick around.

Orioles sent OF Felix Pie outright to Triple-A Norfolk.

Pie was designated for assignment by the Orioles earlier this week. It's not yet clear if he will accept a minor league assignment or declare free agency and look for an opportunity elsewhere.

Orioles designated OF Felix Pie for assignment.

He was cleared to make room for Jake Fox on the 40-man roster. Pie, now 26 years old, has regressed in a big way this season, batting just .220/.264/.280 with a .545 OPS over 175 plate appearances. The former top prospect showed some promise in 2009 and 2010, so we wouldn't be surprised if another organization makes a claim.

Though he wouldn't commit to a straight platoon, Orioles manager Buck Showalter expects to give Felix Pie and Nolan Reimold the most time in left field following Luke Scott's injury.

"I wouldn’t commit to something straight (platoon-wise)," Showalter said. "Let’s just see how it goes. We got a string here where we got left-right-left-right-left-right. I will try to get them both some at-bats." Reimold is starting Tuesday against lefty Matt Harrison, and Showalter said he "wouldn’t be surprised" if Pie plays Wednesday against righty Alexi Ogando. But, he also added that "if Nolan gets it going, I might ride with him." We'd like Reimold to get an extended look, and it sounds like he will if he gets hot.

Felix Pie will play Friday against the Blue Jays, despite hitting a ball off his right foot during batting practice.

Good news. Pie will start in left field and bat leadoff against right-hander Carlos Villanueva.
