Willson Contreras is absent from the Cubs' lineup Sunday.

He's getting a breather as the Cubs ease him back into things following his return from the disabled list. Alex Avila will catch. Javy Baez is also sitting out Sunday, as the Cubs have Addison Russell at shortstop and Ben Zobrist at second base.

Willson Contreras has been handed a two-game suspension for his actions during Friday's game against the Cardinals.

Contreras was ejected from Friday's game for arguing with home plate umpire Jordan Baker and at one point slammed his catcher's mask down on the ground and it inadvertently hit Baker. He'll continue to play while he appeals his suspension.

Willson Contreras was ejected from Friday's game versus the Cardinals following an argument with home plate umpire Jordan Baker.

Baker missed what should have been a called strike three on Carlos Martinez in the top of the fifth inning. Martinez then singled in a run on the next pitch, promptly an eruption first from John Lackey and then from Contreras. The Cubs' catcher slammed down his mask, and it bounced up and hit Baker's leg, which could result in a suspension for the Contreras. He had a single in two plate appearances before being ejected.

Willson Contreras is out of the Cubs' starting lineup Thursday night against the Mets.

Contreras just missed over a month of action due to a hamstring strain so the Cubs are easing him back in. Taylor Davis will start at catcher and bat eighth Thursday versus Mets right-hander Seth Lugo.
Sep 14 - 3:12 PM

Willson Contreras is catching and batting cleanup Tuesday night against the Mets.

It'll be the first start since August 9 for Contreras, who just missed over a month of action with a right hamstring strain. He struck out as a pinch-hitter in Sunday's series finale against the Brewers.
Sep 12 - 3:14 PM

Cubs activated C Willson Contreras from the 10-day disabled list.

He's not starting Sunday and the Cubs figure to be careful with Contreras' playing time initially as he returns from a strained hamstring. Still, the young catcher obviously needs to be in fantasy lineups for the upcoming week. He was red-hot before going on the DL last month.
Sep 10 - 11:37 AM

Willson Contreras (hamstring) joined up with the Cubs on Saturday evening at Wrigley Field.

It sounds like he'll be activated from the disabled list ahead of Sunday's series finale against the Brewers. Contreras, out since August 11 with a right hamstring strain, will return to an .861 OPS, 21 home runs, and 70 RBI in 102 games. He got in some tune-up at-bats with High-A Myrtle Beach, reaching base three times on Friday.
Sep 9 - 6:45 PM

Willson Contreras (hamstring) went 0-for-2 with a hit-by-pitch and a strikeout Thursday in his first minor league rehab game with High-A Myrtle Beach.

Contreras caught four innings behind the plate before leaving the game. He's scheduled to play in another game on Friday before rejoining the Cubs. Contreras has been sidelined for nearly a month with a right hamstring strain. The recently-acquired Rene Rivera has been seeing the bulk of the time behind the plate in his absence.

Willson Contreras (hamstring) is scheduled to play a rehab game Thursday with High-A Myrtle Beach.

If all goes well, he could rejoin the Cubs ahead of Friday night's series opener against the visiting Brewers -- a rare Friday night game at Wrigley Field. Contreras has been on the disabled list since August 11 because of a right hamstring strain. The 25-year-old catcher boasts an .861 OPS with 21 home runs and 70 RBI in 102 games this season for Chicago.
Sep 5 - 10:03 PM

Cubs manager Joe Maddon said Monday after Willson Contreras (hamstring) ran the bases that the catcher is "really close" to returning.

The team had seemed to be targeting a mid-September return for their stud young catcher, but it's sounding like he could beat that timetable by a bit. With rosters expanded they could activate him any day now, but it wouldn't be a surprise if he doesn't handle a regular workload right off the bat. Contreras has been out since mid-August with a right hamstring strain.
Sep 4 - 4:29 PM

Willson Contreras (hamstring) will run the bases during batting practice Monday.

Contreras has also been doing work behind the plate and taking batting practice, so he's getting closer to a return. The next step could be a minor league rehab assignment, but the exact plan is unclear with the regular season coming to an end. Contreras landed on the disabled list August 10 with a right hamstring strain.
Sep 4 - 2:28 PM

Willson Contreras (hamstring) went through baserunning drills Friday.

Bruce Miles of the Daily Herald says that Contreras "looked good" as he ran from home to first and also rounded the bag and stopped. It's a big step as the young catcher works his way back from a strained right hamstring. Contreras doesn't appear to be too far off from a return, although the Cubs obviously will be careful here.
Sep 1 - 11:26 AM

Willson Contreras (hamstring) was catching Jake Arrieta on the side on Wednesday.

Contreras is working his way through a strained right hamstring suffered just shy of two weeks ago. While he has been putting in reps catching of late, he has not tested the hamstring by running. The backstop is expected to be out until at least mid-September.
