Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Monday that playing time in left field will be determined by "whoever's the hottest with the bat."

For now, Bochy plans to use the switch-hitting Andres Torres against left-handed pitching and left-handed-batting Gregor Blanco against right-handers, but the arrangement could quickly change if one of them gets off to a hot start. Unfortunately, neither of them is all that exciting outside of NL-only leagues.

Gregor Blanco had a nice night at the plate in Friday’s 3-1 victory over the Athletics, going 1-for-2 with an RBI triple and a walk.

Blanco is slated to begin the season as the Giants’ everyday starter in left field, and has had a strong spring by hitting .283/.358/.467 with five RBI and four stolen bases. Those in deeper leagues should take notice, as he’s going virtually undrafted in most fantasy leagues, despite his ability to steal 20 or more bases.

Giants avoided arbitration with OF Gregor Blanco by agreeing to a one-year, $1.35 million contract.

Blanco was arbitration-eligible for the first time this winter as a Super 2 player. He batted .244/.333/.344 with five homers and 26 steals in 2012 and will play regularly in left field in 2013.
Jan 18 - 12:22 PM

Gregor Blanco is starting in left field and batting seventh in Sunday's Game 1 of the NLCS.

The Giants haven't faced any left-handed pitchers this postseason, so Blanco will continue to start over Xavier Nady. Manager Bruce Bochy will go with the same lineup from the NLDS. Angel Pagan is batting leadoff, followed by Marco Scutaro, Pablo Sandoval, Buster Posey, Hunter Pence, Brandon Belt, Blanco, and Brandon Crawford. Madison Bumgarner is starting and batting ninth.

Gregor Blanco will be the Giants' starting left fielder for their playoff opener against the Reds on Saturday.

This news isn't terribly surprising as Blanco has gotten the call against most right-handed hurlers while Xavier Nady generally takes on southpaws. He hit just .244/.333/.344 with five homers and 34 RBI during the regular season.

Gregor Blanco (shoulder) finished 3-for-4 with two RBI in his return to the Giants' lineup Wednesday.

Blanco also stole a base, his 23rd in 26 tries this season. The fleet-footed outfielder had been out of the Giants' starting lineup for only a handful of days with a sore shoulder and should be fine going forward.

Gregor Blanco (shoulder) doubled and scored a run as a pinch-hitter Tuesday night against the Rockies.

Blanco told reporters before the game that he was aiming to return to the Giants' starting lineup on Wednesday, and he should now get his wish. He had been held out for the past couple of days with a sore left shoulder.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy said he's hoping to have Gregor Blanco (shoulder) back in the lineup Wednesday.

Blanco reported improvement with his sore left shoulder Monday, but he's sitting out his second straight game and is expected to miss a third, as well. Xavier Nady is handling left field against Jhoulys Chacin and the Rockies.

Gregor Blanco is expected to miss at least a couple days with a sore left shoulder.

Blanco hurt himself during Saturday's game. At this point, he's not scheduled to undergo any tests, but the Giants think he needs some down time. Justin Christian is playing left field Sunday.

Gregor Blanco hit a pinch-hit two-run double in a losing effort against the Braves on Saturday.

Blanco came off the bench in this one, but has seen a recent increase in playing time due to Melky Cabrera's suspension. He's hitting just .241 on the year with five homers and 31 RBI, but he has also stolen 19 bases. The 28-year-old is worth a look as a speed option over the final six weeks of the season.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy indicated after Wednesday's game that Gregor Blanco will likely see most of the playing time in left field following Melky Cabrera's suspension.

Blanco started Wednesday in Cabrera's place and got two hits, driving in one run. He's batting just .236/.331/.346 on the year but does have 19 steals, so he could churn out some value in deeper leagues. It's possible the Giants could look for help outside the organization.

Gregor Blanco will start in left field Wednesday against the Nationals.

And he figures to get most of the playing time there now that Melky Cabrera has been suspended 50 games for testing positive for Testosterone. Blanco got off to a great start this season, but has faded to the tune of a .232/.329/.343 batting line and a .673 OPS. The recent acquisition of Hunter Pence helps soften the blow for the Giants, but Melky's production -- legitimate or not -- will be missed.

Gregor Blanco went 0-for-3 with a walk Tuesday, dropping his average to .242.

The slumping Blanco figures to lose much of his playing time to Hunter Pence, or at least once Angel Pagan is over his bruised fingers. Blanco hit just .196 in 61 at-bats for the month of July.

Gregor Blanco delivered a go-ahead single in the top of the ninth as the Giants beat the A's 5-4 on Friday.

The two-run single gave the Giants a 5-3 lead, allowing them to withstand Josh Reddick's solo homer in the bottom of the ninth. Blanco ended the day 2-for-4 with three steals. He's definitely slowed down at the plate -- he entered the night in a 1-for-20 skid -- but the Giants seem prepared to stick with him in the leadoff spot.
