Kila Ka'aihue - 1B - Diamondbacks

Diamondbacks signed 1B Kila Ka'aihue to a minor league contract.

It's not clear whether he'll receive a spring training invitation. Ka'aihue has shown plenty of promise in the minors but has batted just .221/.305/.382 over 465 major league plate appearances.

Kila Ka'aihue has elected free agency.

The 28-year-old slugger hit .234/.295/.398 with four homers and 14 RBI in 39 games for the Athletics this season. His upside and power potential should generate plenty of interest and a spring training invitation.

It was originally speculated that Ka'aihue would be placed on paternity leave, as his wife is scheduled to deliver twins soon, but obviously that's not the case. He's been replaced on the roster and at first base by Brandon Moss. Ka'aihue figures to report to Triple-A Sacramento if he clears waivers.

Ka'aihue also reached base on an infield single. The effort boosts his batting average to .234 and his RBI total to 14.

Ka'aihue hasn't played since Friday due to right hamstring soreness. The 28-year-old is hitting .292/.354/.431 with one homer, seven doubles and a .785 OPS over 79 plate appearances with the A's this season.

Ka'aihue hasn't played since Friday due to right hamstring soreness. Consider him day-to-day for now. Daric Barton will make the start at first base Monday while Jonny Gomes serves as the DH against right-hander Dan Haren.

Kila Ka'aihue homered and doubled in a losing cause Thursday against the A's.

Ka'aihue was 1-for-13 in his previous three starts and he hadn't homered in 64 at-bats this season prior to tonight. The A's are waiting for either he or Daric Barton to step up and claim the starting job at first base. Ka'aihue helped his cause tonight.

Kila Ka'aihue went 2-for-6 and drove in the game-winning run in the 14th against the White Sox on Wednesday.

The A's picked Ka'aihue over Brandon Allen earlier this month, and he's played well in limited action, going 12-for-36. If he can get his power stroke going, he could wrestle the first-base job away from the struggling Daric Barton.

Susan Sussler of the San Francisco Chronicle suggests Kila Ka'aihue will be the ''odd man out'' when the Athletics call up their fifth starter Tuesday.

All signs point to Tyson Ross getting the call, so they'll have to make a corresponding move. Ka'aihue, 28, is out of options, and will need to be passed through waivers. He's batting .375 in three games this season.

Kila Ka'aihue doubled and belted his third homer of the spring Tuesday against the Cubs.

Ka'aihue is hitting a pedestrian .258 this spring, but it's come along with a .939 OPS. The soon-to-be 28-year-old is out of options, so he'll need to be passed through waivers if he doesn't crack the Opening Day roster.

Athletics acquired 1B Kila Ka'aihue from the Royals for RHP Phillip Hollingsworth.

Ka'aihue was designated for assignment by the Royals last week. He posted a weak .195/.295/.317 batting line in 96 major league plate appearances earlier this year, but the 27-year-old has shown an ability to rake in the past and could find his groove again with a change of scenery. He's worth the minor risk for the offensively inept A's.

Royals designated 1B Kila Ka'aihue for assignment.

He was cleared to make room for Kelvin Herrera on the active roster. The "Kila Monster" made the Opening Day roster, but batted just .195/.295/.317 with two homers and a .612 OPS over 96 plate appearances before being demoted to the minors in early May. While his patience remains an asset, he may struggle to get another significant opportunity in the big leagues.

Royals optioned 1B Kila Ka'aihue to Triple-A Omaha.

Ka'aihue slugged eight home runs and tallied 25 RBI in just 180 at-bats for the Royals last season and was expected to take a big step forward here in 2011. But he posted a .195/.295/.317 over his first 23 games and will now head back to the minors for a bit more marinating. The 27-year-old should be allowed to return when his bat awakes.
