Nationals released 1B/OF Kila Ka'aihue.

The 31-year-old slugger has been playing for Triple-A Syracuse where he slashed just .193/.314/.328 with four homers and 13 RBI in 39 games. It's unclear if he'll look to continue his career elsewhere or decide to hang up his cleats.

Kila Ka'aihue hit his third homer of the spring Thursday against the Astros.

Ka'aihue, Tyler Moore and Clint Robinson are all having great springs for the Nationals, but Moore is seemingly the only one with a real chance of making the club. On the other hand, the strong showings of Ka'aihue and Robinson give the Nats more flexibility to trade Moore, who is out of options, if they don't want to carry a lumbering backup. Ka'aihue and Robinson are both on minor league deals, so they can be sent down without incident.

Nationals signed 1B Kila Ka'aihue to a minor league contract.

The deal includes an invitation to major league spring training. 30-year-old hasn't played in the big leagues since the 2012 season and has spent the past two years in Japan where he slashed .258/.358/.443 with 25 homers and 85 RBI in 154 games for the Hiroshima Carp. He'll compete for a spot on the Nationals bench.

Japan's Hiroshima Carp have picked up their option on Kila Ka'aihue, according to MLB Daily Dish's Chris Cotillo.

Ka'aihue was cut loose by the Diamondbacks this past June and landed in Japan. The 29-year-old may resurface with an MLB team before it's all said and done.

Diamondbacks released 1B Kila Ka'aihue.

The release was requested by Ka'aihue, who had an out clause in his contract. He batted .313/.426/.620 with 16 homers and 50 RBI at Triple-A Reno before asking to be cut loose. He won't have trouble catching on elsewhere.

Diamondbacks signed 1B Kila Ka'aihue to a minor league contract.

It's not clear whether he'll receive a spring training invitation. Ka'aihue has shown plenty of promise in the minors but has batted just .221/.305/.382 over 465 major league plate appearances.

Kila Ka'aihue has elected free agency.

The 28-year-old slugger hit .234/.295/.398 with four homers and 14 RBI in 39 games for the Athletics this season. His upside and power potential should generate plenty of interest and a spring training invitation.

Athletics sent 1B/DH Kila Ka'aihue outright to Triple-A Sacramento.

Ka'aihue went unclaimed on waivers after being designated for assignment earlier this week and will accept an organizational depth role at Sacramento. He's replaced on the roster and at first base by Brandon Moss.

Athletics designated 1B-DH Kila Ka'aihue for assignment.

It was originally speculated that Ka'aihue would be placed on paternity leave, as his wife is scheduled to deliver twins soon, but obviously that's not the case. He's been replaced on the roster and at first base by Brandon Moss. Ka'aihue figures to report to Triple-A Sacramento if he clears waivers.

Kila Ka'aihue (hamstring) is out of the A's starting lineup Monday against the Angels.

Kila Ka'aihue homered and doubled in a losing cause Thursday against the A's.

Ka'aihue was 1-for-13 in his previous three starts and he hadn't homered in 64 at-bats this season prior to tonight. The A's are waiting for either he or Daric Barton to step up and claim the starting job at first base. Ka'aihue helped his cause tonight.

Kila Ka'aihue went 2-for-6 and drove in the game-winning run in the 14th against the White Sox on Wednesday.

The A's picked Ka'aihue over Brandon Allen earlier this month, and he's played well in limited action, going 12-for-36. If he can get his power stroke going, he could wrestle the first-base job away from the struggling Daric Barton.
