It didn’t take a late-race pass like last week to get the win, but George Brunnhoelzl III had to work hard to score his second straight NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour triumph.

Brunnhoelzl passed Andy Seuss on Lap 125 to regain the lead and held off Burt Myers to win the South Boston 150 at South Boston Speedway on Saturday. The victory was the 27th of his storied career and he now joins Seuss as the only driver to score multiple wins at the historic .4-mile track located in South Boston, Virginia.

Late race heroics paid off for George Brunnhoelzl III at North Carolina’s Concord Speedway.

The 33-year-old North Babylon, New York, native joined the battle for first place with 12 laps remaining and passed Ted Christopher with three laps to go to collect his first win of the 2016 NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour season and his 26th career tour win. Christopher settled for second followed by Burt Myers, defending champion Andy Seuss and Jason Myers. While Bobby Measmer Jr., JR Bertuccio, Kyle Bonsignore, Gary Putnam and Danny Bohn rounded out the top 10.

George Brunnhoelzl III, the four-time NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour champion, finished second to Andy Seuss in the closest points battle in tour history and enjoyed another solid campaign driving for his family-owned team.

Brunnhoelzl was down in the standings in early April after the South Boston race in 15th place after three consecutive finishes outside the top-10 to start the season. He went on to win three of the final seven races on the schedule and challenge Seuss with a strong run at a fifth championship. Brunnhoelzl led more laps (623) than anyone else on the tour by an almost 3-to-1 margin and equaled Seuss’ mark of three wins. In the closest championship race in NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour history, Andy Seuss stood alone at the end of the night at Charlotte Motor Speedway as the 2015 titlist.

With a sixth-place finish in Thursday’s season finale Southern Slam 150, Seuss edged race winner George Brunnhoelzl III by three points in the season standings to secure his second-consecutive Whelen Southern Modified Tour crown. The Southern Slam 150 marked the 25th career victory for the four-time tour titlists Brunnhoelzl, who previously triumphed on the Charlotte quarter-mile oval in 2012. He led all but one of the 160 laps.Ryan Preece followed Brunnhoelzl across the finish line in second with Danny Bohn third, Jason Myers fourth and Burt Myers fifth. After Seuss it was Jeremy Gerstner, John Smith, Bobby Measmer Jr. and Dalton Baldwin in the top 10.

After having his final practice session cut short to repair a brake issue on his No. 28 Dunleavy Truck & Trailer Repair/Composite Tech Chevrolet, four-time NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour champion George Brunnhoelzl III went out and won his 26th career Coors Light Pole Award during qualifying for the Southern Slam 150.

Brunnhoelzl, who enters tonight's race in fourth-place, 13 points behind tour leader Andy Seuss, completed his qualifying run with a fast time of 14.684 seconds (61.291 mph) to outdistance Ryan Preece who followed closely in second place at 14.704 (61.208). Championship contender Burt Myers enters the race in second place, 10 points behind Seuss, starting third with Danny Bohn and John Smith completing the top five.
