Roush Fenway Racing’s Ryan Reed earned an 18th-place finish in the opening race of the Nationwide Series season and his first race at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday.

Due to an accident in NASCAR’s new qualifying format, he started 39th. He wasted little time moving through the pack. By Lap 8, Reed was up to 24th, radioing to the crew that the car was drafting well. He continued to draft in the top-20 for the rest of the afternoon. Reed ultimately closed out his first restrictor place race in 18th. The No. 16 Ford Mustang sustained heavy damage after crossing the finish line. Ryan Reed has the best 10-lap consecutive average speed in the Happy Hour practice for the Nationwide Series DRIVE4COPD 300 at Daytona International Speedway.

The average speed of 188.385 mph in the No. 16 Ford Mustang was best of the 12 cars that ran 10 consecutive laps on the track for this final practice session. No. 6 Trevor Bayne, No. 2 Brian Scott, No. 84 Chad Boat and No. 3 Ty Dillon are the rest of the top five on this list.

He made six starts for RFR in 2013, earning his best finish of ninth at Richmond International Raceway in just his third NNS start. Reed finished in the top-15 in four of his six starts. Roush Fenway Racing announces Ryan Reed as the driver of the No. 16 American Diabetes Association Drive to Stop Diabetes SM presented by Lilly Diabetes Ford Mustang for the 2014 NASCAR Nationwide Series Season

He will drive the No. 16 RFR Ford full-time in the 2014 NASCAR Nationwide Series season, competing for a championship and rookie-of-the-year honors. Reed, a NASCAR driver making his dreams come true while living with type 1 diabetes, collaborated with the American Diabetes Association for the Drive to Stop Diabetes SM campaign in 2013, driving for RFR in a limited schedule. Lilly Diabetes, a leader in diabetes care since 1923, will be part of three NASCAR Nationwide Series races in 2013, Charlotte, Phoenix and Homestead and the entire 2014 season.-Roush Fenway Racing

Ryan Reed (16 Ford) will make his third career NASCAR Nationwide Series start at Richmond International Raceway this Friday.

Reed made his NNS debut at RIR earlier this season, finishing 16th after running in the top-10 for the majority of the race. Reed’s most recent NNS start was at Bristol Motor Speedway, where the rookie finished 26th. In 2012, he competed in 14 ARCA races, earning one top-five and six top-10 finishes. He had an average start of 8.6 and an average finish of 10.6. Reed also made one start in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series last season at Las Vegas, where he finished 17th.-Roush Fenway Racing
