Brendan Gaughan failed to qualify at Martinsville and Texas in his last two attempts. He needs to simply make the show in order to stop his downward spiral.

If he can qualify for the next two or three weeks, the focus will shift to improving his results because Gaughan crossed under the checkers four laps off the pace in 41st at Auto Club.

Brendan Gaughan was credited with a 33rd place DNF in Friday night's NASCAR XFINITY Series race at Texas Motor Speedway.

He started the No. 62 WIX Filters Chevrolet Camaro 12th on the grid for the O'Reilly Auto Parts 300. He led three laps and made it to lap 167 of the 200 lap event before exiting the race (Accident). He dropped two spots to eighth in the 2015 XFINITY Series championship standings.

Brendan Gaughan hopes that he is able to duplicate his Atlanta Quik Trip 500 effort instead of his result at Vegas in the Kobalt 400. He finished 28th in Georgia, but was only 38th in his home state of Nevada.

It has been more than a decade since Gaughan visited Texas in the Cup series and he did not have the experience he desired in his latest attempt. In the No. 77 Penske / Jasper entry, he blew an engine on lap 230 and retired 38th.

In six XFINITY Series starts at Texas Motor Speedway, Brendan Gaughan has completed 1,178 laps of the 1,205 (97.8 percent) that he has competed. He averages a starting position of 15.8 and a finishing position of 19.7 at the 1.5-mile speedway.

Gaughan has been successful at Fort Worth in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, collecting his first Series victory in June 2002. The 39-year-old driver and crew chief Shane Wilson also hold a two-year streak of four consecutive Camping World Truck Series victories in 2002 and 2003, the first driver in Camping World Truck Series history to win four consecutive times at the same track. Along with Friday night's XFINITY Series O'Reilly Auto Parts 300, Gaughan is scheduled to race in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Duck Commander 500 on Saturday in the No. 62 Premium Motorsports entry.-Richard Childress Racing

Brendan Gaughan has qualified on time only once in his first five attempts this season. He clocked in 31st fastest at Atlanta, but was forced to take provisionals at Vegas, Phoenix, and Auto Club. He failed to make the show at Martinsville.

Gaughan’s best finish also came at Atlanta when he crossed under the checkers 28th. A good start is critical for this team, but as long as they are attempting to qualify every week, it may be difficult to allocate their resources in a manner that gets them that single fast lap.

Brendan Gaughan’s last attempt at Martinsville ended in a second-place finish. That came in the 2013 Kroger 200 in a Richard Childress Racing Truck after he qualified 15th.

Gaughan also has some Cup experience on this course. He made two starts in 2004 for Penske / Jasper and scored a career best of 17th. He has struggled some in 2015, but this could be his best opportunity to finish in the top 25.

Brendan Gaughan finishes second in Saturday's NASCAR XFINITY Series race at Auto Club Speedway.

He started the No. 62 South Point Chevrolet Camaro eighth on the grid for the Drive4Clots.com 300. The second-place finish gives the team their first top five and third top-10 finish of the season. Gaughan remains sixth in the driver point standings as the XFINITY Series takes a hiatus for the next two weeks, returning to action April 10 at Texas Motor Speedway.

The Western swing will wind up at Auto Club Speedway and fantasy owners wonder if Brendan Gaughan will finish in the mid-30s for a third consecutive week. He finished 38th at Las Vegas and was 37th at Phoenix.

It will take a while before Gaughan is considered a strong dark horse, but he has been running at the end of every race he started this season and should continue to improve with time.

Brendan Gaughan has made two previous Cup starts at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. His best finish so far was a 22nd in 2004 racing for Roger Penske.

Gaughan also finished 34th in 2012 racing for Richard Childress, so he has been in decent equipment. He will be a sentimental favorite, but is unlikely to be one of the best fantasy values this week.
