Brendan Gaughan’s last attempt at Martinsville ended in a second-place finish. That came in the 2013 Kroger 200 in a Richard Childress Racing Truck after he qualified 15th.

Brendan Gaughan finishes second in Saturday's NASCAR XFINITY Series race at Auto Club Speedway.

He started the No. 62 South Point Chevrolet Camaro eighth on the grid for the Drive4Clots.com 300. The second-place finish gives the team their first top five and third top-10 finish of the season. Gaughan remains sixth in the driver point standings as the XFINITY Series takes a hiatus for the next two weeks, returning to action April 10 at Texas Motor Speedway.

The Western swing will wind up at Auto Club Speedway and fantasy owners wonder if Brendan Gaughan will finish in the mid-30s for a third consecutive week. He finished 38th at Las Vegas and was 37th at Phoenix.

It will take a while before Gaughan is considered a strong dark horse, but he has been running at the end of every race he started this season and should continue to improve with time.

Brendan Gaughan has made two previous Cup starts at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. His best finish so far was a 22nd in 2004 racing for Roger Penske.

Gaughan also finished 34th in 2012 racing for Richard Childress, so he has been in decent equipment. He will be a sentimental favorite, but is unlikely to be one of the best fantasy values this week.

Brendan Gaughan hopes that the third time will be the charm at Atlanta. He finished 33rd in the spring of 2004 and was 18th that fall. He would like to crack the top 15 in the No. 62 this week.

With the current level of competition in the Cup series, that is going to be a tall order. He qualified 31st and has several strong cars lined up behind him, which means even a top-30 might actually be a challenge.

Brendan Gaughan was credited with a 29th place DNF in Saturday's NASCAR XFINITY Series season opener at Daytona International Speedway.

He started the No. 62 South Point Chevrolet Camaro fourth on the grid for the Alert Today Florida 300. He made it to lap 110 of the 120 lap event before exiting the race (multi-car Accident). He starts the season 21st in the 2015 XFINITY Series championship standings.

Brendan Gaughan, the Las Vegas native, will make his seventh XFINITY Series start at Daytona International Speedway this weekend.

Gaughan's sixth-place finish in last February's race marked his best finish at the 2.5-mile superspeedway in any of NASCAR's top-three series. Shane Wilson returns as crew chief for Gaughan and the No. 62 team. The 2015 season marks the 10th season the duo will work together, spanning across each of NASCAR's premier series, as well the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West. Brendan Gaughan will drive in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series for Premium Motorsports beginning with the March 1 race at Atlanta Motor Speedway, the team announced Tuesday.

Gaughan’s XFINITY Series teammate at Richard Childress Racing, Brian Scott, will drive the No. 62 Premium Motorsports car for the Daytona 500. Gaughan has 42 career Cup starts. His most recent Cup start was in Aug. 2013 at Michigan when he finished 33rd. He finished eight in the XFINITY standings last season, scoring wins at Road America and Kentucky.
