Woody Pitkat, the 35-year-old Stafford, Connecticut, driver powered to the victory in the NAPA Spring Sizzler 200, the traditional season-opening event for Stafford Motor Speedway.

In the process, the driver of the No. 88 Buzz Chew Chevrolet/Elbow East Chevrolet became the first hometown driver to win the prestigious NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour event. It was Pitkat's third career tour win. He scored his first career win last year in the August event at Stafford before following it up with a win a month later at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Sunday, Pitkat led the last 40 laps after muscling his way past Todd Szegedy through the bottom of Turn 3. It was the last of 11 lead changes.

When it was all said and done, Woody Pitkat finished in the same Whelen Modified Tour points position he had the year before, and actually had two less top 10s, but it was a transformational year for the veteran.

After seven seasons of mostly full-time competition, Pitkat scored the first two race and pole wins of his career, and registered a personal-best five top fives. The long-awaited first win appropriately came at his hometown track, Stafford, in the August event and he reached Victory Lane on the tour’s biggest stage three races later in the September New Hampshire race. 2014 was the year Pitkat became a contender.-NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour

Woody Pitkat was credited with a 35th place DNF in Sunday's NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season finale at Thompson (CT) Speedway Motorsports Park.

He started the No. 88 Buzz Chew Chevrolet/Elbow East Restaurant Chevrolet on the pole (119.579 mph) for the Sunoco World Series 150. He led eight laps and made it to lap 17 of the 151 lap event before exiting the event (Accident). He closes out the tour season ninth in the 2014 NWMT point standings.

Woody Pitkat’s breakout campaign continues in the season finale as he secured the Coors Light Pole Award for the Sunoco World Series 150 presented by Xtra Mart in NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour action at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park.

Without a pole or a race win in his first seven years on the tour, Pitkat now has two of both after Saturday’s top qualifying effort. The Stafford, Connecticut, native posted a fast lap of 18.816 seconds (119.579 mph) to make it 2-for-3 in qualifying at Thompson this year. He also earned the pole for the season-opening Icebreaker on April 6.
