Luol Deng (illness) is traveling around Europe and feeling better than he was during the playoffs.
Deng's illness was very, very bad and he has to be hospitalized, so we're glad to see he's doing better now. He's expected to be fine well in advance of training camp and fortunately he didn't jeopardize his long-term health by trying to return too early. Jun 10 - 1:55 PM

Luol Deng will not have surgery on his ailing wrist, a source told Real GM.

Deng has always said that he had no plans to get surgery, so we're not sure why this is a news report at this time. Regardless, Deng will let the injury heal with rest and rehab and is fully expected to be ready for training camp.

Luol Deng (illness) reported improvement since the Bulls season ended.

Thankfully, it looks as if Deng's ordeal is coming to a conclusion at some point in the near future. He's expected to make a full recovery, but it's becoming increasingly clear how far he was from actually playing in round two against the Heat.
May 17 - 8:51 AM

Luol Deng (illness), Kirk Hinrich (calf) and Derrick Rose (knee) are all out for Wednesday's Game 5 vs. Miami.

Deng did not even travel to Miami. The Bulls will look to stave off elimination, but Chicago faces a huge undertaking. As has been the case throughout the second round, Nate Robinson will start at point guard with Marco Belinelli at shooting guard and Jimmy Butler at small forward. There's a real chance Chicago's season ends on Wednesday night.

Luol Deng (illness) is on the active roster for Monday's game against the Heat.

He wasn't even on the bench to start the game, so he's still extremely doubtful to suit up. The Bulls don't run a very deep rotation, which means there's really no harm done to putting Deng on the active list.
May 13 - 7:06 PM

Updating a previous item, Luol Deng (illness) and Kirk Hinrich (calf) are not expected to play in Monday's Game 4 vs. Miami.

As expected, the Bulls will be shorthanded again. Nate Robinson will start at point guard with Jimmy Butler at small forward, meaning Marco Belinelli will continue to start at shooting guard. The Bulls will look to tie up the series at 2-2 in Chicago.

Luol Deng's body is not cooperating with him as he deals with the aftermath of his illness, and it's doubtful he'll play on Monday vs. Miami.

Deng was doubtful coming in and it's not looking very good for him. "It's just my body, my system, is not reacting well to anything I'm doing right now," Deng said. He lost 15 lbs. and has only gained two back, and he's struggling because it's tough for him to eat solid foods. Anyone questioning Deng's toughness shouldn't be, and it's possible we don't see him again this year. Jimmy Butler will continue to start at small forward.
May 13 - 9:42 AM

Luol Deng (illness) threw up after trying to practice on both Saturday and Sunday, and he "continues to sound doubtful" for the remainder of the second round vs. Miami.

Deng lost 15 pounds due to complications following a spinal tap, he's struggling to keep down solid foods, and he suggested that he might play "5 to 10 minutes" if possible. Tom Thibodeau called Deng "day to day" heading into Game 4 on Monday, but nearly all Bulls writers assume he won't suit up.
May 12 - 10:17 PM

Luol Deng (illness) will not play against the Heat in Monday's Game 4.

He tried to practice on Saturday and he threw up, so he still has a long way to go to be back. This is a strange and serious issue for Deng, which suggests he's questionable at best for Game 5 on Wednesday. It'll be all Jimmy Butler all the time on Monday.
May 12 - 2:23 PM

Luol Deng was a limited participant in Sunday's practice and is listed as day-to-day.

He still isn't right and is likely headed for a game-time decision on Monday. If he does play in Game 4, Deng won't be active much and perhaps Jimmy Butler's minutes drop to the 42-46 range.
May 12 - 1:43 PM

Luol Deng (illness) and Kirk Hinrich (calf) will not play in Game 3 against the Heat on Friday.

The best-case scenario for Deng was about five minutes tonight, so he was extremely doubtful even before this news. He's still not quite there mentally and physically, which suggests there's still a chance he won't be back for Game 4 on Monday. It'll be the Jimmy Butler show on Friday and he could play 48 minutes for the fourth time in five games.
May 10 - 12:05 PM

"It's possible, if not likely," that Luol Deng will miss the remainder of the second round as he recovers from his illness, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Deng was "adamant" that he will play "even five minutes" if he can, but Deng has lost 15 pounds and "can't even endure exertion without headaches" at this stage. He's extremely unlikely to play in Game 3 and has already been deemed as doubtful, and it wouldn't be surprising to see him miss additional time. "I started feeling really weak. I started throwing up, constant diarrhea. I couldn't control my body really. And I still don't feel right," Deng said. With Deng sidelined, Marco Belinelli and Jimmy Butler are locked into major minutes. Deng also revealed that he played through a fractured thumb this season in addition to the torn ligament in his wrist, so he's nowhere near full health.
May 10 - 8:25 AM

Luol Deng admitted Thursday he's lost 15 pounds due to his recent illness and was "really scared" by how his body reacted.

Deng is very doubtful to play in Game 3 against the Heat after spending time last week in the hospital following complications from a spinal tap. Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said Deng did some shooting Wednesday but the swingman admitted that he's still very weak and unable to do much. This all sounds like an incredibly terrifying ordeal for Deng to have to gone through and at this point it's just a good thing he's able to walk around and attend practice. We're guessing the earliest Deng returns is Game 4, which still sounds unlikely. Jimmy Butler will continue to get all the minutes he can handle in the meantime.
May 9 - 3:34 PM

Luol Deng (illness) and Kirk Hinrich (calf) are both considered doubtful for Game 3 vs. Miami.

In other words, it's the status quo with Chicago. Although Deng will rejoin his teammates on Thursday and did some stuff on Wednesday, he's not considered likely to be ready for Game 3, and there is a chance that he won't be ready at all for this series. As for Hinrich, he'll get a second MRI, and there is a fear that a tear may have developed after initial damage was to his muscle fibers. Nate Robinson, Marco Belinelli and Jimmy Butler are all locked into major minutes.
May 9 - 10:10 AM

Luol Deng (illness) will join his teammates in Chicago on Thursday.

Tom Thibodeau said he didn't want to speculate on Deng's status for the rest of the series. "He did a little bit of shooting [Tuesday]. [Wednesday], he was just more like walking around. We'll see where he is [Thursday]." Deng is usually asked to play a ton of minutes and the emergence of Jimmy Butler should make it a little easier on him upon his return.
