Luol Deng, Timofey Mozgov or Jordan Clarkson could be moved at some point this upcoming season in order to create room to sign Paul George as an unrestricted free agent in 2018.
Former Lakers' GM Mitch Kupchak awarded Deng and Mozgov with some atrocious contracts on his way out the door, and now Laker management will need to rectify that situation in order to be able to present George a competitive offer during free agency next summer. Deng is on the books for roughly $54 million through 2020, while Mozgov is owed around $48 million over the next three seasons, but maybe they'll be able to find a taker by including Jordan Clarkson as a part of the package. They could also make things work by letting Julius Randle go during free agency in 2018, but shedding Mozgov or Deng's contracts would make more sense from a competitive standpoint. Jun 18 - 3:56 PM

Luol Deng (chest) had surgery on his right pectoral muscle on Wednesday.

He is expected to make a full recovery before training camp. Deng is 32 years old and his best days are probably behind him, especially with how coach Tom Thibodeau played him so heavily in his Bulls days. He won't be worth drafting in fantasy next year.

Luol Deng said he hopes to play more frequently at power forward next season.

2016-17 was a lost season for Deng. Despite signing a whopping four-year, $72 million contract last summer, Deng averaged career-lows in points (7.6), FG percentage (.387), assists (1.3) and minutes (26.5). He feels part of the problem was playing out position. "In terms of my future," Deng said, "I would like to play at the 4 more. The 3 is more of a spot-up position for a lot of teams. I think I struggle with that." We'll see how the Lakers handle Deng next season, but he should be avoided in standard fantasy leagues until he proves he can still produce.
Apr 22 - 10:03 AM

The Lakers will reportedly shut down Luol Deng for the remainder of the 2016-17 season.

The Lakers are prioritizing the development of the younger guys on the roster, so both Timofey Mozgov and Deng will not take the court again this season, meaning that their $136 million investment will finish the year watching from the sidelines. Both Mozgov and Deng have three years left on their deal in which they'll be paid far more than their market value, so Lakers GM Rob Pelinca may consider waiving these guys during the offseason. Brandon Ingram will be the unquestioned started small forward moving forward, and Larry Nance could see an uptick in minutes.

Luol Deng was inactive for Sunday's game vs. the Sixers.

The veteran simply isn't part of the on-court equation as the Lakers enter the final stretch of the season. The youth movement is in full swing and we might not see Deng on the court again, solidifying him as waiver wire material.
Mar 13 - 12:58 AM

Luol Deng said he understands being inactive for the Lakers.

"I totally understand what we’re doing," Deng said. "[Coach Luke Walton] wants the guys to be in situations where they learn and play minutes. It’s always about what we’re trying to do. Why am I going to be on the bench if I’m not playing?" Deng and Tyson Chandler have been great sports with their teams going with youth. Both are drops basically everywhere. Brandon Ingram is worth a look, but he is just not doing anything with his minutes.

Mar 4 - 4:52 PM

Luol Deng is inactive for Friday against the Celtics.

Well, the youth movement is on. Brandon Ingram should be getting some serious minutes, but hopefully he can do something with them. Deng is a drop candidate in most leagues.
Mar 3 - 10:05 PM

Luol Deng scored three points with three rebounds and one 3-pointer in 21 minutes against the Pistons on Wednesday.

Based on coach Luke Walton's comments, it doesn't sound like this will be changing anytime soon. "He’ll give us a lot of advantages with that group," Walton said about Deng in the second unit. He'll have some decent games mixed in, but the consistency will clearly be dropping off the bench. Deng is only a deep-league guy due to a lower upside.
Feb 8 - 11:26 PM

Luol Deng scored seven points off the bench on Monday vs. the Knicks, shooting 1-of-6 from the field in 24 minutes with three boards, one assist, one steal and one block.

When asked how he felt about coming off the bench behind Brandon Ingram, Deng said, "Does it matter?" He's a team player and added that he won't make this about him, so give him credit for accepting a lesser role. He's trending in the wrong direction and is a drop candidate in most leagues.
Feb 6 - 10:10 PM

Luol Deng will come off the bench for Monday's game against the Knicks.

Brandon Ingram will be getting the start, and with the way the Lakers' season is going, this could be a permanent change. Deng has been operating well outside the top-150 for the past month, and his value will continue to plummet as his minutes decline with the second unit, so he's a cut candidate in most leagues.
Feb 6 - 4:15 PM

Luol Deng scored 17 points with six rebounds, one block and three 3-pointers in 32 minutes against the Wizards on Thursday.

He closed as the power forward for the Lakers, which is likely due to how they were trailing. Deng did play 31 minutes in his last game on Tuesday and he looks to be over his wrist issue. There will always be some concern he gets rested later this year, but he may have some value to the All-Star break. Keep an eye on his status for Friday's road game.
Feb 2 - 10:20 PM

Updating a previous report, Luke Walton confirmed that Luol Deng (wrist) will play Wednesday in Portland.

Deng missed the scrimmage portion of Tuesday's practice, but he'll be good to go for Wednesday's game after logging 19 minutes in his return from a two-game stint on the sidelines on Sunday. Deng is starting and getting solid run for the Lakers, but statistically, his production just hasn't been there and his rest-of-season outlook isn't looking great as an older guy playing on a rebuilding team.
Jan 24 - 3:36 PM

Luol Deng (wrist) is probable to play Wednesday in Portland.

Deng went through a majority of Tuesday's practice, but sat out the scrimmage portion after a minor collision with Tarik Black in which he got popped in the face. He should be good to go for Wednesday night, although over the past month he's ranked outside the top-150 with forgettable averages of 8.0 points, 5.9 boards and not much else on 40.5 percent shooting. As Larry Nance works his way into game shape, Deng's value will likely continue to trend in the wrong direction.
Jan 24 - 3:05 PM

Luol Deng (wrist) was back in the starting lineup following a two-game stint on the sidelines and produced nine points, two boards, two blocks and one 3-pointer in 19 minutes.

The low minute total can be attributed to the blowout nature of the game, although Deng's minutes could start trending south as Larry Nance is brought back into the rotation. On the season, Deng ranks outside the top-150, and there won't be much incentive for Luke Walton to prioritize his playing time towards the second half of the year with guys like Brandon Ingram and Nance in need of developmental minutes. In other words, Deng isn't a very attractive pickup in most settings.
Jan 22 - 7:09 PM

Luol Deng (wrist) and Nick Young (knee) will start Sunday vs. the Mavericks.

Deng will be returning from a two-game absence, and Brandon Ingram, Young, Julius Randle and Timofey Mozgov will join him in the starting five. Deng hasn't played very well over the past month, and with Larry Nance (knee) also getting back to the court tonight, he's not a strong pickup in most settings. Ingram has been playing really well lately, and after flirting with a triple-double the last time he started at point, he makes for an intriguing DFS play today.
