Karl Malone will join the Jazz organization as a part-time assistant coaching the team's big men.
The Mailman could be tutoring the Jazz's backcourt of the future in Enes Kanter and Derrick Favors. That's because veterans Al Jefferson and Paul Millsap are scheduled for unrestricted free agency and it appears likely that at least one of them, if not both, will sign elsewhere this summer. Malone has been connected with assistant jobs in the past in both the NBA and college, but never ended up taking any of them. If it goes well, this position with the Jazz could be a good foot into the NBA coaching door. Wed, May 29, 2013 07:10:00 PM

Our friend, Don Nelson, did not get selected.

The university is expected to hire Rupp shortly to take over as head coach, and Malone is said to be considering joining the coaching staff.

Karl Malone was brought in to evaluate Duke power forward Shelden Williams, and centers Hilton Armstrong of UConn, Mouhamed Saer Sene from Senegal and Patrick O'Bryant of Bradley for Utah's upcoming draft.

"Am I looking one day to be more involved and more active in (basketball)? Absolutely," the Mailman said. "I don't mind starting at the bottom, being on the sideline. When I came out of college (Louisiana Tech, in 1985), I did the same thing."

Karl Malone, the NBA's second all-time leading scorer, announced his retirement in Utah today.

''Even though I left for a year, I grew here as a Jazz man,'' Malone said. ''If I'm fortunate enough to go into the Hall of Fame, I will go as a Jazz man.'' We think he just might make it. Malone, twice the league's MVP, finishes with 36,928 points, just 1,459 behind Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's record.

ESPN News is reporting that Karl Malone will officially announce his retirement this weekend.

While it's still not official, those of you who have been holding on all year can finally let go. If you're a glutton for punishment, maybe you can still go out and get Zo Mourning.

Karl Malone met with Tim Duncan and coach Gregg Popovich yesterday about a possible return to the NBA with the Spurs.

The meeting seemed to go well, although no one except the Mailman knows his intentions. If he does return, it would likely be with the Spurs and happen prior to the All-Star break. If you have a spot open on your bench, he's worth a flyer. Just don't be disappointed if he ends up retiring.

Karl Malone's agent had hoped to have a firm decision on Malone's future in a week. That week is now at 11 days and counting.

Spurs officials, who think Malone is leaning toward retiring, haven't pressed him for a decision. But coach Gregg Popovich said the team can't wait forever, either. "I think that (cutoff date) is getting close, probably," Popovich said. "I can't imagine it being too far past the All-Star break." The longer this goes with no news, the more it seems like we really have seen the last of the Mailman.

The Spurs aren't optimistic about bringing Karl Malone to San Antonio.

Malone must really be feeling old and ready to retire if he won't join the Spurs. He has a good relationship with Gregg Popovich, they have the best record in the league, and a glaring need in the frontcourt while Rasho Nesterovic is hurt (and even when he's healthy). Malone's agent said the Mailman should announce his decision within the week.

Karl Malone's agent said today that the Mailman is leaning toward retirement.

Agent Dwight Manley says that Malone should make a decision in the next few weeks. He could easily end up with the Lakers, but it would probably be in the front office instead of the basketball court.

Karl Malone still hasn't decided whether to return, and with whom. But the Spurs would like to have him no later than Feb. 20.

Coach Gregg Popovich believes it would be too difficult to integrate a new player into a system after the All-Star break. The Spurs are the leading candidates for The Mailman, but the Heat are right there too.

Karl Malone said he still has no intention of re-signing with the Lakers, but he does plan to meet with Laker owner Jerry Buss and GM Mitch Kupchak.

"For all that has gone on, they called me, said they wanted to meet with me and I thought it was a good idea," Malone said. "I'll say this. It ain't a lot of people that make efforts. I have absolutely no reason not to listen to what Dr. Buss and Mitch have to say." The Spurs, T'Wolves, and Heat remain Malone's biggest suitors, with Dallas and New Jersey also expressing interest.
