Martell Webster (back) will not play Sunday vs. the Suns.
Webster is nearing a return, but Sunday will not be the day. We'll consider him questionable for Tuesday's game vs. Chicago, but with Paul Pierce and Bradley Beal healthy, there's not much reason to give him any attention in standard leagues. Dec 21 - 4:40 PM

Martell Webster (back) could return to action as soon as Sunday against the Suns.

He has yet to play this season after coming off of his third back surgery in his career, so it will be great to see back out on the floor. He was seen getting up shots at practice on Saturday for a couple of hours, and he is reportedly feeling good. If he doesn't make his season debut Sunday, his next chance to play would be on Tuesday vs. the Bulls. However, Webster will likely be eased back into the rotation, and he won't see a lot of minutes while Paul Pierce and Otto Porter are healthy. Webster can be ignored in most leagues.
Dec 21 - 9:51 AM

Martell Webster (back) is on schedule to return to action this month.

He is going to have a minutes limit when he is able to play. Webster is a tremendous fit for the Wizards and he flourished last season while Bradley Beal was out. He'll have to fend off Rasual Butler for playing time, so most owners can take a wait-and-see approach.
Dec 20 - 5:00 PM

Martell Webster (back) practiced on Thursday, but was unable to participate in full.

Webster has been ramping up his rehab, but didn't participate in a full-court practice on Thursday so we're reading tea leaves as to when he'll return. Webster's eventual return will cut in the fantasy value of Paul Pierce, Rasual Butler and Otto Porter, but standard league owners can feel free to leave him on the waiver wire.
Dec 11 - 1:43 PM

Martell Webster (back) was seen going through an intense workout after Friday's shootaround.

Head coach Randy Wittman said that Webster is "starting to do more and more each day," so it would seem he's getting close to making his regular-season debut. However, Webster is going to be coming into a backup role playing behind Bradley Beal, so he can only be viewed as a 3-point specialist in very deep leagues. Standard league owners can continue to leave him on the waiver wire.
Dec 5 - 6:06 PM

Martell Webster (back) still isn't participating in full practices, but is doing more and more in attempt to come back by December.

"He's coming along," coach Randy Wittman said after Friday's practice. "He's doing more and more." While this is great to hear, there are no real fantasy implications here as Webster likely won't have a large enough role to matter in all but the deepest of leagues. We will monitor his status going forward, but you can safely leave him on your waiver wire.
Nov 29 - 10:17 AM

Martell Webster (back) is not going through a full practice on Friday.

He is getting closer to a return and was cleared for contact last week. The Wizards have given Rasual Butler some minutes in the past few games and it's pretty clear Webster will get a sizable portion of minutes because of his shooting. We still don't have a concrete target date, so he's not worth stashing in most leagues right now.
Nov 28 - 2:12 PM

Martell Webster (back) has been cleared for contact in practice.

He's had three back surgeries in his last four years, so the Wizards won't be in a rush to get him into game action. The 27-year-old swingman also said he expects to retire at 30, so the team probably won't want to give him too many minutes upon his return. He and Otto Porter should cancel each other out in most fantasy leagues.
Nov 21 - 2:24 PM

Martell Webster (back surgery) said he's "right on schedule," which indicates he could return in late November.

The last report we heard was that Webster was making minimal progress in his rehab, so this is a very encouraging update. A return in December seems more likely, as Washington won't take any chances with his health, and either way he's a marginal fantasy option with Bradley Beal (wrist) back in the lineup.
Nov 19 - 7:13 PM

Martell Webster (back) is not participating in any full contact drills.

Webster isn't even jumping yet. He could be back within the month, but it sounds as if it will be longer than that. With a history of back issues, we're not expecting Webster to beat his timetable to return after offseason surgery. Paul Pierce and Otto Porter will continue to hold it down at small forward. At shooting guard, it's Porter and Garrett Temple until Bradley Beal (wrist) returns.
Nov 10 - 9:10 AM

Martell Webster (back) continues to rehab, but he's not making any progress.

Webster had back surgery in late June, so it's been more than four months since the procedure. Initially given a 3-5 month timetable, it's not looking like Webster is going to be back before five months at the very earliest. With a history of back issues, we can't say we're surprised. Otto Porter's fantasy stock continues to rise.
Nov 3 - 1:45 PM

Martell Webster will "probably" retire after his current contract expires.

Webster has three-years and $16.8 million left on his current contract. The nine-year veteran cites health as the main reason he is looking to walk away from the game at age 30. "I know this game is probably not going to be the healthiest thing for me if I try to stretch it out as much as a possibly can. So I intend to really give everything I got for these last three years of my contract and probably walk away from this game so I can be healthy."
Oct 2 - 5:26 PM

Martell Webster (back) has been engaging in drills at a "surprisingly high level" during Thursday's practice, according to

This report seems to conflict with Tuesday's report that Webster had not been cleared for contact following offseason back surgery, so we'll have to await some more clarity on this situation. An early return to the court could be great for the Wizards, but even a healthy Webster doesn't have a ton of fantasy value as he'll be battling for minutes with Bradley Beal, Otto Porter, Glen Rice Jr., Rasual Butler, and Paul Pierce.

Martell Webster (back) has still not been cleared for practice.

He was given a 3-5 month timetable back in June to return to basketball-related activities, so that means he could make his season debut any time between opening night and December. With Otto Porter able to contribute to start the season, there's no rush for Webster to return. He's not worth drafting in most leagues.
Sep 30 - 8:11 PM

Martell Webster (back surgery) will be able to take part in limited activities when training camp opens on Tuesday, according to Wizards coach Randy Wittman.

"He won’t be 100 percent come Tuesday, but he’ll be able to do some things," Wittman said. "He’s progressing really well." Webster had a herniated disc in his lower back which was expected to keep him out 3-5 months after surgery in late June. If he isn't ready for opening night, more minutes will be available for guys like Bradley Beal, Otto Porter, Glen Rice Jr. and Rasual Butler.
