Blazers big man Joel Freeland will not compete with Great Britain in their EuroBasket qualifying event this summer.
Freeland will instead stay in Portland to train with the Blazers. He averaged 14 minutes off the bench before a knee injury shut him down last season, but he's now fully recovered and will also play for Portland's Summer League team in Las Vegas. The arrival of Chris Kaman makes Freeland an afterthought for fantasy owners. Jul 12 - 10:50 AM

Date:

Joel Freeland said he will play in Las Vegas Summer League in July.

This is good news after a knee injury cost him two months during the season. Freeland made it back for the regular-season finale and played just 24 minutes in the postseason. He's unlikely to be anything more than a backup next season.
May 16 - 3:47 PM

Joel Freeland returned to action on Wednesday vs. the Clippers.

He picked up some playing time with LaMarcus Aldridge and finally made it back after being on the active roster since Sunday.
Apr 17 - 3:28 AM

Joel Freeland (knee) was available to play on Sunday, but he never entered the game during a thrilling OT victory vs. the Warriors.

Blazers coach Terry Stotts has shown a willingness to deploy Freeland in his second unit, but tonight wasn't a good night to return a rusty player to the rotation after months of inactivity.
Apr 14 - 1:06 AM

Joel Freeland (sprained MCL) will be active for Sunday's game.

Freeland hasn't played in two months and he's unlikely to get more than a few minutes off the bench, but his return is great news for the Blazers with the playoffs on the horizon. He'll likely steal the few minutes that Meyers Leonard was getting, while also challenging Thomas Robinson for playing time.
Apr 13 - 7:19 PM

Joel Freeland (knee) is a game-time decision for Sunday's matchup with the Warriors.

He's been sidelined since early February and the Blazers would love to work him back into the rotation before the playoffs begin. After two straight days of 4-on-4 work during practice, there's a good chance we'll see him play on Sunday or at least Wednesday's season finale.
Apr 12 - 4:03 PM

Joel Freeland went through a contact practice on Tuesday and he's hopeful to return for one of the Blazers' final two regular season games.

"I felt pretty good, I was moving pretty well," Freeland said. He's missed 26 games and will undoubtedly be eased into the rotation, in all likelihood taking a few minutes away from Thomas Robinson.

Apr 8 - 4:50 PM

Trail Blazers big man Joel Freeland (MCL sprain) doesn't expect to return during the regular season.

Freeland hopes to be healthy in time for the playoffs, so he won't be able to help out while LaMarcus Aldridge recovers from his bruised back. He was averaging a solid 3.3 points, 3.9 rebounds and 0.4 blocks in just 14 minutes per game before hurting himself.

Blazers forward Joel Freeland (sprained MCL) sought a second opinion from a specialist on Tuesday, but he is still "nowhere near returning."

The 27-year-old has been out three weeks and he initially had a 4-8 week timetable, so it's not surprising to hear that he's still out indefinitely. The Blazers hope that he can appear in a few regular season games and enter the playoffs at full strength, which means that he's irrelevant in fantasy leagues.

Mar 6 - 2:31 PM

Joel Freeland suffered an MCL sprain to his right knee on Tuesday and is expected to miss four-to-six weeks of action.

Robin Lopez sees another boost, while Meyers Leonard should get respectable minutes off the Blazers bench. They're the only NBA team to use the same starting lineup in every game this season, but their bench is becoming a bit thin.
Feb 12 - 3:19 AM

Joel Freeland suffered a right knee injury against the Thunder on Tuesday and went to the locker room.

His injury did not look good and he could not put any weight on his right foot while getting help to the locker room. Unfortunately, there's a good chance Freeland is looking at a long time off the court. Meyers Leonard should get more playing time as the backup center.
Feb 11 - 10:37 PM

Joel Freeland used heat packs on his back during Sunday's game but he still finished with four points and five rebounds in 14 minutes of action.

Portland's primary backup big man has dealt with back pain for a while now, but he's missed only one game all season (Nov. 5). Terry Stotts' remarkably consistent rotations have limited Freeland to around 12-18 minutes in every game this season, which should help keep any back injuries at bay.

Joel Freeland (hip) had four points, four rebounds, one steal and two blocks in 17 minutes during his return to action on Friday.

The second-year PF/C is playing unchallenged minutes behind Robin Lopez, and he's making the most of it. Meyers Leonard, who averaged 17 minutes per game last year, has fallen out of Terry Stotts' rotation thanks in large part to Freeland's emergence.

Joel Freeland will play in Friday night's game against the Kings.

We went through practice on Thursday and was expected to play. The Blazers could use him as a backup to Robin Lopez against DeMarcus Cousins.
Fri, Nov 8, 2013 08:19:00 PM

Joel Freeland (hip) practiced fully on Thursday after being limited for the past few days.

"I'm better, I went through pretty much the whole practice today," Freeland said. "I have little bit of pain still but we'll see how it feels [on Friday]." Terry Stotts is once again keeping his bench on a short leash this season, but Freeland is playing 14 minutes per game. Mo Williams and Dorell Wright are the only reserves getting more action, and deep-league owners should keep Freeland in their peripheral vision.
