Nikola Pekovic (Achilles) will miss at least six months after undergoing surgery on his right Achilles tendon.
A timetable of six months would put Pekovic out until mid-October, so there's a decent chance he may not be ready for the start of the 2015-16 season. We'll monitor Pek's status closely, but it sounds like Gorgui Dieng will have a more prominent role next season as the plan is to limit Pekovic's minutes even when he's healthy. With his prolonged timetable and upcoming minutes limit, Pekovic's fantasy will be limited to deeper leagues if this current news holds. Apr 21 - 12:58 PM

Coach Flip Saunders said he's optimistic Nikola Pekovic will be able to give the Wolves 20 minutes per game.

That should have been the plan coming into this season and perhaps the Wolves will stick with it this time. Around the All-Star break, Pekovic was playing around 35 minutes per game, but the wheels fell off two weeks later. If Pek does play just 20 minutes per game, that's fantastic news for Gorgui Dieng for now. That could all change with the upcoming draft.
Apr 20 - 2:26 PM

Nikola Pekovic had a successful debridement and repair of his right Achilles on Wednesday.

He is going to be out indefinitely and should be ready for training camp. The Wolves are probably not feeling good about Pek's contract and they're probably not going to be able to unload his deal in a trade. Justin Hamilton will start at center again tonight.
Apr 8 - 5:01 PM

Nikola Pekovic (ankle) admitted that he is concerned about his future in the NBA due to lingering ankle and foot issues.

"Of course I am,’’ Pekovic said. "I’m pretty much worrying about how this is going to affect my life in 10 years. I mean, I’m still thinking about basketball [too]. But when you deal so much with something like this. … It’s a big deal, I think.’’ Pekovic was only able to play in 31 games this season after managing to play just 54 in the previous one, so he has every right to be concerned. He has already been ruled out for the rest of the season and will undergo surgery to repair his right Achilles on Wednesday, so we will provide another update after the procedure. Because of the constant injury risk, owners in most leagues will probably want to avoid him next season.
Apr 4 - 9:25 AM

Nikola Pekovic will undergo surgery next Wednesday to remove damage and repair his right Achilles tendon, and he will be out indefinitely.

Pekovic has already been ruled out for the remainder of the 2014-15 season, but it's not currently known at what point he'll be able to resume on-court basketball activities during the offseason. Depending on the damage that is discovered during the "debridement" surgery, there's a chance this becomes a career-threatening issue, so we'll be monitoring this situation closely. We wish Pekovic the best, but after only managing to suit up for 31 games this season, he's just far too much of an injury risk to be considered an option during next year's draft in standard fantasy leagues.
Apr 2 - 4:43 PM

Nikola Pekovic (ankle) will not play again in the 2014-15 season.

Earlier today we asked why the Wolves haven't ruled him out for the season, so at least there is some certainty in this situation. Pekovic can be dropped in all re-draft leagues. Justin Hamilton will get the start at center tonight.
Mar 30 - 6:52 PM

Nikola Pekovic (ankle) will not play against the Jazz on Monday.

Why can't the Wolves just rule him out indefinitely? Anyway, he has no target date to return and he's probably not going to play this season. Even if he does, he'll have a minutes cap. Leave him on the wire. Justin Hamilton benefits most and is worth a look in all leagues if you're feeling saucy.
Mar 30 - 2:12 PM

Nikola Pekovic (ankle) and Gary Neal (ankle) will not play against the Pelicans on Sunday.

They Wolves continue to rule out Pek the day before games, so it's hard to like his chances of playing in the next week or even this season. Gorgui Dieng is going to continue his run as a must-start player while Justin Hamilton backs him up. Hopefully Hamilton can get more minutes.
Mar 28 - 6:07 PM

Nikola Pekovic (ankle) has been ruled out for Friday's game vs. the Rockets.

It would be easier if the Timberwolves would just go ahead and announce that Pek will be shutdown for the season, but until that happens, we'll continue to post updates stating that he's out and belongs on the waiver wire. Justin Hamilton (migraines) returned to action on Wednesday, but only managed to log nine minutes off the bench. However, he was playing very well for Minnesota before going down, so if you have some dead weight on your roster, it makes sense to take a flier on Hamilton with the hopes he'll soon get a decent amount of minutes playing for a Minnesota team that has been devastated by injuries.
Mar 26 - 5:04 PM

Nikola Pekovic (ankle) will not suit up for Wednesday's game vs. the Lakers.

Gorgui Dieng has been logging heavy minutes lately with zero depth behind him. He'll likely again be asked to play as close to the entire game as possible on Wednesday with Kevin Garnett (knee) doubtful, and Justin Hamilton (migraines) questionable. Pekovic remains without a clear timetable to return, and with Minnesota playing for draft picks, it's unlikely we'll see Pek in uniform again this season.
Mar 24 - 5:46 PM

Nikola Pekovic (ankle) will not play against the Jazz on Monday night.

There was almost no chance Pekovic was going to play tonight and the Wolves finally decided to rule him out early. There's a very good chance we won't see Pek back on the court this season with the Wolves playing for lottery balls and being tied to his contract. Gorgui Dieng will continue to be one of the best big men to own in fantasy while Adreian Payne and Chase Budinger will get the rest of the big-man minutes. Dieng does get a bad matchup against Rudy Gobert tonight, though.
Mar 23 - 2:21 PM

Nikola Pekovic (ankle) is once again listed as questionable for Monday's game against the Jazz.

Despite the questionable tag, Pek has missed six straight and he's just not worth the constant headache. We don't expect him to play, and we should instead see Gorgui Dieng, who is a must-own, must-start player at this time. He's averaging 11.0 points, 8.8 rebounds, 1.2 steals and 2.0 blocks on 50.5 percent shooting as the starting center, and Justin Hamilton (migraines) has already been ruled out, as well.

Mar 23 - 12:17 PM

Nikola Pekovic (ankle) will not play on Sunday vs. the Hornets.

This will be his sixth straight game on the sidelines and there is simply no telling if he will play again this season. Pekovic's owners should have already moved with fantasy playoffs in progress, while Gorgui Dieng will continue to be a must-start player in all formats. Justin Hamilton has also been playing well and is worth a look in deeper leagues if his migraines clear up.
Mar 22 - 5:58 PM

Nikola Pekovic (ankle) is questionable to play against the Hornets on Sunday.

His ankle are not capable of playing big minutes, so don't expect to see Pekovic get many minutes even if he can play. We're still not expecting him to play and aren't interested in picking him up. Gorgui Dieng is going to continue putting up huge numbers.
Mar 21 - 6:19 PM

Nikola Pekovic (ankle) will remain sidelined for Thursday's game vs. the Knicks.

Head coach Flip Saunders said that Pekovic will be out for "a while," but wouldn't confirm whether or not that means he's done for the season. Given the fact that Pek has been battling ankle soreness the entire year, and that Minnesota is playing for draft picks, we don't expect Pekovic to return to action this year; and he belongs on the waiver wire in all leagues. Gorgui Dieng and Adreian Payne are currently the only healthy bigs on the roster for Minnesota, so they will obviously be forced into heavy minutes tonight. Dieng should be a stud while Payne will look to bounce back from a lackluster Wednesday.
