Omer Asik said he just wants to defend and rebound with the Pelicans this season.
When Anthony Davis heard about that comment, his smile was "like Kool-Aid Man," but thankfully he didn't bust through any walls. Asik won't be asked to score much and will likely just be a two-category fantasy asset. Plus, he's not a great free throw shooter. Fantasy owners shouldn't look to target him until the last round or so. Sep 17 - 7:41 PM

Omer Asik averaged 9.9 points, 8.4 boards, 1.6 blocks and 0.7 steals in his seven FIBA World Cup games.

The blocks are the most surprising. Asik only had career-high 1.1 blocks per game in his 30.0 minutes per game in 2012-13. He is very likely to start for the Pelicans this year, but he's not a lock for 26-plus minutes because the team will have to figure out how to play Ryan Anderson off the bench, which will slide Anthony Davis to center.

Omer Asik scored 11 points to go along with 10 rebounds, two assists, one steal, and two blocks during Turkey's semi-final loss to Lithuania on Tuesday.

Turkey's FIBA World Cup of Basketball run will end in the quarterfinals, but Asik had a strong showing during the tournament. The 28-year-old gutted through flu-like symptoms on Tuesday and will now prepare to provide fantasy owners with above average rebounding numbers that should him him pegged as a late-round target on draft day.

Omer Asik (flu) is in the starting lineup for Team Turkey's quarterfinal matchup against Lithuania at the FIBA World Cup of Basketball.

Despite experiencing flu-like symptoms, Asik was able to start at center on Tuesday for the Turkish national team. Asik has cooled off after a hot start to the tournament, but still makes for a solid late-round pick in fantasy leagues due to his potential to post gaudy rebounding numbers.
Sep 9 - 11:21 AM

Omer Asik had 9 points, 10 rebounds, 1 steal and 1 block in Turkey's win over the Dominican Republic on Thursday.

Asik has cooled off since his huge 16 point, 20 rebound game against the Ukraine, but he still put up decent numbers across the board. Look for Asik to return solid fantasy value next season playing with budding superstar Anthony Davis.
Sep 4 - 5:05 PM

Omer Asik posted 16 points, 20 rebounds, and one block in Turkey's 64-58 loss to Ukraine on Tuesday.

While Asik only shot 4-for-11 from the floor, he surprisingly knocked down eight of 10 attempts from the free throw line. While the FIBA World Cup competition isn't quite the NBA, it's a good sign to see the 28-year-old post such gaudy numbers. He'll get an increased opportunity to produce alongside Anthony Davis in 2014-15 and is worth a late-round pick in standard fantasy leagues.

Omer Asik played only 10 minutes in Turkey's win over New Zealand on Saturday, finishing with one point, zero rebounds and two blocks.

Asik picked up a few quick fouls but wasn't injured, and coach Ergin Ataman simply opted to go another direction with his rotation. The result was a three-point win vs. a New Zealand team which isn't exactly a powerhouse, so it wouldn't be surprising to see Asik's role grow as the tourney continues.

Aug 30 - 2:30 PM

Omer Asik said that he has no hard feelings toward the Houston Rockets and that he was grateful for his time with the team.

"I just really want to thank all the fans and all the support I had in Houston," he said. "I want to thank everyone in the organization and especially my teammates. I really enjoyed my time in Houston." Asik will see more of an opportunity in New Orleans than he did in Houston and should provide solid value for fantasy owners looking for rebounds and blocks at the end of their drafts.
Aug 14 - 12:03 PM

James Harden spoke highly of Omer Asik in a recent interview, specifically citing his defense.

"He brings a defensive effort. He’s going to do everything right on defense," said Harden. "He’s going to be a leader out there. All he wants to do is win. When you get a guy like that on your team, that’s always great. The Pelicans got a tremendous player in Omer." Omer should have a nice season as the starting center in New Orleans. He won't give you very much scoring, but he's a rebounding dynamo and should provide decent late-round value.

Aug 1 - 2:34 PM

The NBA has officially approved the trade between the Pelicans, Wizards, and Rockets that will send Omer Asik to New Orleans.

The deal will go down as a three-team trade that sends Asik, Omri Casspi and $1.5 million to New Orleans, Trevor Ariza, Alonzo Gee, Scotty Hopson, and New Orleans' protected first-round pick in 2015 to Houston, and Melvin Ely and a $8.5 million trade exception to Washington. Asik only averaged 5.8 points and 7.8 rebounds per game in 2013-14, but he should serve a solid late-round pick with his numbers poised to see a boost in New Orleans.
Jul 15 - 1:24 PM

Adrian Wojnarowski is reporting that the Rockets are set to deal C Omer Asik to the Pelicans for a future first-round draft pick and $1.5 million.

This should be about a done deal and it's a big move for the Pelicans, who had a lot of injury and depth problems at center last season. Look for Asik to start alongside Anthony Davis next season, and look for his fantasy value to take a nice jump now that he no longer has to deal with Dwight Howard. As for the Rockets, they're clearly making monetary space in hopes of acquiring LeBron James or Carmelo Anthony. Additionally, Michael McNamara is reporting that the Pelicans have to trade Austin Rivers or Eric Gordon in order to take on Asik, so there's likely more to come in this deal after the draft.

Sam Amick is reporting that the Rockets have deals lined up for both C Omer Asik and PG Jeremy Lin, but they only want to move them if they have a shot at landing Carmelo Anthony or LeBron James.

Every team in the league seems to have interest in Melo and LeBron, so whether the Rockets will be able to land either star remains in doubt. But it does sound like they have a plan in place in case either player wants to go play in Houston with Dwight Howard and James Harden.

Omer Asik started against the Blazers in Game 3 on Friday, finishing with seven points, eight boards, two assists and one block

He guarded LaMarcus Aldridge for much of this game and did a decent job, keeping him near the baseline rather than in the high post. Asik will likely start again on Sunday night.
Apr 26 - 2:18 AM

Omer Asik will start at power forward against the Blazers on Friday night.

This will move Terrence Jones to the bench and it's mostly due to LaMarcus Aldridge having a field day in the first two games of this series. Asik fared better than Jones in both games and it'll be interesting to see how much of an overhaul the Rockets' rotation gets tonight.
Apr 25 - 9:23 PM

Omer Asik said on Tuesday that he wants another chance to guard LaMarcus Aldridge in Game 2 on Wednesday.

"The first thing is to stop LaMarcus Aldridge," Asik said. "He killed us almost last game and going into this game, we have to do our best to help him stop a little bit more." Coach Kevin McHale added his team will do some stuff differently and and sounds like he could make some calls on the fly. Aldridge got way too deep in the paint against Terrence Jones quite often in Game 1, so look for the Rockets to use that defensive matchup less.
