Omer Asik played through a back injury last year and "wasn't able to exercise at all" for part of the season, according to general manager Dell Demps.
The Pelicans signed him to one of the worst contracts last year and they'll likely have to live with it. Anthony Davis is more effective when he's not out there with Asik, so the Asik-Davis lineups might not be used as much. Jun 20 - 5:21 PM

Pelicans GM Dell Demps said he had a "very candid conversation" with Omer Asik after the season.

"Omer is a no excuses guy and he will tell you that," Demps said. "He had a back injury and wasn't in basketball shape. He didn't have a good season." That's putting it nicely. Asik looked terrible during the 2015-16 campaign with averages of 4.0 points and 6.1 boards, and he eventually fell behind Kendrick Perkins in the rotation. The Pelicans still owe him $31.8 million over the next three seasons.
Jun 20 - 12:32 PM

Omer Asik set a career-high with 24 points vs. the Wolves on Wednesday, hitting 10-of-13 FGs and 4-of-6 FTs with 11 rebounds, one assist and one steal in 32 minutes.

The Pelicans were running on fumes tonight and Asik was their only healthy center beyond Kendrick Perkins, so he wound up playing nearly double his season average (17.1 mpg). The Wolves' defensive efficiency (105.5) ranks 27th in the league since the All-Star break, moreover, so the table was set for a rare high-scoring game from Asik. This has no bearing on his poor outlook for 2016-17.
Apr 14 - 12:51 AM

Omer Asik did not score against the Suns on Saturday with three rebounds and one turnover in 14 minutes.

The Pelicans have no choice on playing him. Asik is one of the slowest players in the league and doesn't even rebound that well anymore. He can't be trusted even if Alexis Ajinca (shoulder) is out.
Apr 9 - 9:21 PM

Omer Asik started at center on Wednesday but had only two points, four rebounds and three turnovers in 14 minutes as the Pelicans fell in Boston 104-97.

The Pelicans have now used 40 unique starting lineups this season, a startling number which makes sense given the extent of their injuries -- they might use another lineup vs. the Lakers on Friday, considering how awful Asik was tonight. As if Pelicans fans haven't suffered enough, they'll watch the franchise pay him another guaranteed $31.8 million over the next three seasons.
Apr 6 - 10:46 PM

Omer Asik will return to the starting lineup for Wednesday's game against the Celtics, sending Luke Babbitt back to the bench.

Asik has been very garbage lately, and only managed to log four minutes in his previous start, so he can't be considered a viable target in any setting despite the starter designation. Babbitt should still be able to see close to 30 minutes off the bench with how ridiculously injured New Orleans is.
Apr 6 - 6:23 PM

Omer Asik will come off the bench on Tuesday vs. the 76ers.

Asik played just four minutes vs. the Nets on Sunday and hasn't played well all season. Alexis Ajinca will start tonight is worth owning in most leagues with four games on the schedule for the Pelicans this week.
Apr 5 - 6:01 PM

Omer Asik played just four minutes during Sunday's win over the Nets, registering two points, two fouls and zero other statistics.

Asik was replaced by Alexis Ajinca to begin the second half, and never made his way back to the court. He's not injured, so his benching was simply due to ineffective play. The fact that Asik only managed to get on the court for four minutes despite being just one of three healthy bigs on the roster speaks volumes about his non-existent fantasy status.
Apr 3 - 3:32 PM

Omer Asik scored two points with three rebounds and two turnovers in eight minutes against the Knicks on Monday.

He had Kendrick Perkins take his minutes, so that is a pretty good indication of how poorly Asik has played lately. He's not a fantasy option unless you're in dire straits for boards.
Mar 29 - 1:05 AM

Omer Asik is feeling healthier than he was earlier in the season.

"I definitely feel much healthier," Asik said. "I feel better, I feel confident in my body. I just tried to get better every day and play better." The big man is considering playing in the Olympic qualifiers for Turkey, and he intends to "get in better shape for next season." Asik is averaging 8.0 points and 11.3 rebounds over his last four games, but even on a depleted Pelicans team, he's really not a fantasy option.

Mar 28 - 1:21 PM

Omer Asik grabbed 15 boards against the Pacers on Thursday with two points and one turnover in 24 minutes.

That's your typical Asik line with very little output on offense -- he only had one offensive board, too. He'll need to play minutes in the 20s most nights, but his upside is really just as a rebound specialist.
Mar 24 - 9:23 PM

Omer Asik scored eight points on 3-of-6 shooting vs. the Heat on Tuesday with nine boards and one steal in 21 minutes.

He was coming off a solid double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds vs. the Clippers on Sunday, but he predictably cooled off tonight. It's not a good sign if Kendrick Perkins (23 minutes) is getting more run than him, so Asik is nothing but a rebounding specialist in deeper leagues for now.
Mar 22 - 11:18 PM

Omer Asik pummeled the Clippers on Sunday for 15 points, 14 rebounds and two assists in 30 minutes of action, making 6-of-9 FGs and 3-of-5 FTs in the Pelicans' upset win.

New Orleans was desperate for one of their frontcourt players to step up in the absence of Anthony Davis and Ryan Anderson, and Asik responded with one of his best games all season. He helped the Pelicans to a 54-35 edge on the glass tonight, but one impressive double-double won't sell us on him as a pickup -- we'll let you know if he strings together a few nice games.
Mar 20 - 9:32 PM

Omer Asik was benched to begin the second half on Wednesday, going scoreless with one rebound, two assists and one steal in six minutes.

Alvin Gentry went small after halftime, with Anthony Davis shifting to center, and this is just one more reason to avoid Asik. The six-year veteran has struggled all season long, averaging just 3.7 points, 6.1 rebounds and 0.4 blocks in 17.3 minutes, and the waiver wire is his permanent home.
Mar 9 - 10:33 PM

Omer Asik (ankle) returned to action on Saturday vs. the Jazz and played 25 minutes, scoring four points with six boards, one assist and one block.

This was his first game back since Feb. 23, but he looked like he was moving fine out there. Asik has been a major disappointment all season and won't be a reliable asset in most fantasy leagues even if he gets consistent minutes in the 20s.
