Omer Asik started on Wednesday but had only two points, one board and one assist in 17 minutes during a disappointing loss to the Nuggets.
The oft-injured center has secured the starting gig, but may be subject to random benchings against smaller opponents. As tonight's line shows, even as a starter he doesn't have much appeal. Oct 27 - 12:18 AM

Omer Asik will start for the Pelicans in the season opener.

Asik played well in the preseason for the Pelicans, averaging a team-high 7.2 rebounds per game. Alexis Ajinca will backup Asik and the two may end up splitting minutes fairly evenly. Tim Frazier, E'Twaun Moore, Solomon Hill and Anthony Davis will round out the New Orleans starting five.

Coach Alvin Gentry suggested that Omer Asik and Alexis Ajinca could split minutes at center this season.

"It’s a good combination of guys who give us different looks," the head coach said. "Both of those guys are going to play. There are going to be situations where one plays a lot one night, then the next night the other plays more minutes, depending on the type of team we’re playing against and what we’re looking for." The potential timeshare and uncertain distribution of minutes was an undesirable situation before this quote, and this is now turning into a nightmare scenario that fantasy owners will want to avoid investing in on draft day.
Oct 15 - 3:08 PM

Omer Asik scored 14 points vs. the Rockets on Sunday, adding 14 rebounds, one assist and five blocks in 28 minutes.

Alexis Ajinca (DNP-rest) started the first two preseason games and outplayed Asik in those, but Asik got the start in this one and gave coach Alvin Gentry something to think about moving forward. Gentry still hasn't decided who will be the starter on opening night, so this position battle could go down to the wire. To be clear, both players are better suited for deep-league owners and this performance has fluke written all over it.
Oct 9 - 9:59 AM

Alvin Gentry said that he's not set on starting a true center next to Anthony Davis each game this year.

With how awful Omer Asik has been during his time in New Orleans, it's not surprising at all to hear Gentry make this sort of statement. Gentry said that he'd consider starting Davis at the five spot for certain matchups, which could result in Terrence Jones earning some extended minutes as the Pelicans' starting PF. Jones is coming off a down-year, but he offers a decent amount of upside and is worth a late-round pick on draft day. The same cannot be said for Asik, who isn't really worth drafting anywhere.
Sep 28 - 1:05 PM

Omer Asik said he's hoping to bounce back after dealing with back, calf and ankle issues last season.

"I just kept playing through things," Asik said. "But injuries just happened over and over. That’s why I tried to focus on getting stronger, so I won’t face those problems again. I worked all summer to get healthy. Right now, I’m feeling great, much better than last year." He was brutal last season to put it nicely, and it's possible he could lose his starting job to Alexis Ajinca. The Pelicans would also be wise to use Anthony Davis at center in smaller lineups, so Asik will need a tremendous camp in order to hold onto his role. Don't draft him.
Sep 24 - 12:10 PM

Omer Asik played through a back injury last year and "wasn't able to exercise at all" for part of the season, according to general manager Dell Demps.

The Pelicans signed him to one of the worst contracts last year and they'll likely have to live with it. Anthony Davis is more effective when he's not out there with Asik, so the Asik-Davis lineups might not be used as much.
Jun 20 - 5:21 PM

Pelicans GM Dell Demps said he had a "very candid conversation" with Omer Asik after the season.

"Omer is a no excuses guy and he will tell you that," Demps said. "He had a back injury and wasn't in basketball shape. He didn't have a good season." That's putting it nicely. Asik looked terrible during the 2015-16 campaign with averages of 4.0 points and 6.1 boards, and he eventually fell behind Kendrick Perkins in the rotation. The Pelicans still owe him $31.8 million over the next three seasons.
Jun 20 - 12:32 PM

Omer Asik set a career-high with 24 points vs. the Wolves on Wednesday, hitting 10-of-13 FGs and 4-of-6 FTs with 11 rebounds, one assist and one steal in 32 minutes.

The Pelicans were running on fumes tonight and Asik was their only healthy center beyond Kendrick Perkins, so he wound up playing nearly double his season average (17.1 mpg). The Wolves' defensive efficiency (105.5) ranks 27th in the league since the All-Star break, moreover, so the table was set for a rare high-scoring game from Asik. This has no bearing on his poor outlook for 2016-17.
Apr 14 - 12:51 AM

Omer Asik did not score against the Suns on Saturday with three rebounds and one turnover in 14 minutes.

The Pelicans have no choice on playing him. Asik is one of the slowest players in the league and doesn't even rebound that well anymore. He can't be trusted even if Alexis Ajinca (shoulder) is out.
Apr 9 - 9:21 PM

Omer Asik started at center on Wednesday but had only two points, four rebounds and three turnovers in 14 minutes as the Pelicans fell in Boston 104-97.

The Pelicans have now used 40 unique starting lineups this season, a startling number which makes sense given the extent of their injuries -- they might use another lineup vs. the Lakers on Friday, considering how awful Asik was tonight. As if Pelicans fans haven't suffered enough, they'll watch the franchise pay him another guaranteed $31.8 million over the next three seasons.
Apr 6 - 10:46 PM

Omer Asik will return to the starting lineup for Wednesday's game against the Celtics, sending Luke Babbitt back to the bench.

Asik has been very garbage lately, and only managed to log four minutes in his previous start, so he can't be considered a viable target in any setting despite the starter designation. Babbitt should still be able to see close to 30 minutes off the bench with how ridiculously injured New Orleans is.
Apr 6 - 6:23 PM

Omer Asik will come off the bench on Tuesday vs. the 76ers.

Asik played just four minutes vs. the Nets on Sunday and hasn't played well all season. Alexis Ajinca will start tonight is worth owning in most leagues with four games on the schedule for the Pelicans this week.
Apr 5 - 6:01 PM

Omer Asik played just four minutes during Sunday's win over the Nets, registering two points, two fouls and zero other statistics.

Asik was replaced by Alexis Ajinca to begin the second half, and never made his way back to the court. He's not injured, so his benching was simply due to ineffective play. The fact that Asik only managed to get on the court for four minutes despite being just one of three healthy bigs on the roster speaks volumes about his non-existent fantasy status.
Apr 3 - 3:32 PM

Omer Asik scored two points with three rebounds and two turnovers in eight minutes against the Knicks on Monday.

He had Kendrick Perkins take his minutes, so that is a pretty good indication of how poorly Asik has played lately. He's not a fantasy option unless you're in dire straits for boards.
