Derrick Favors (left knee) participated in portions of Sunday's practice.
This is the first time that Favors has gone through any sort of practice since going down with the knee injury, and while this is a positive development, we're still going to consider him questionable for Utah's regular-season opener against Portland until we get some more information. Knee issues for big men are always concerning, so Favors remains a bit of a risky early-round target. Trey Lyles will benefit most if Favors' misses any time during the regular season. Derrick Favors (left knee, IT band syndrome) did not practice again on Saturday.

The Jazz and fantasy owners can continue to hold out hope that he'll be ready for the regular season opener, but the reality is as follows: Favors hasn't been on the floor in nearly three weeks, we've gotten very little real information when it comes to his progression and nobody seems to know exactly what the problem is. At this point, we have no choice but to bump him down our draft boards while moving up Trey Lyles a few ticks in the process. Favors should be considered questionable at best for opening night and the potential exists for him to miss multiple regular season contests.

Derrick Favors (left knee) did not practice on Friday.

Since his preseason debut back on Oct. 4, Favors has been on the injury report due to knee soreness. He had right knee soreness back in April and also missed one game due to left knee soreness in 2012. In other words, Favors' 25-year-old knees aren't in terrible shape. That said, he should be bumped down a round or two with this concern. Trey Lyles has added value.

Derrick Favors (left knee) is questionable for Utah's season opener on Oct. 25, according to Jazz beat writer Tony Jones.

Jones wrote that he's "hearing [Favors] will be back for opener," but he also warned, "won't know his status until close to Tuesday ... he needs to practice first." There are obviously no guarantees that Favors won't begin the season with a DNP, but this is at least an optimistic tidbit for worried fantasy owners.
Oct 20 - 12:22 AM

Derrick Favors (left knee) didn't play in Wednesday's preseason finale, as expected.

Favors hasn't practiced since Utah's preseason opener, which doesn't bode well for his opening-night status. He's dealing with IT band syndrome, which is related to overuse and causes pain during lateral movement, and rest is the primary prescription. There's enough risk here to bump him down a round or two on draft day.
Oct 19 - 11:37 PM

Derrick Favors (left knee) did not go through shootaround and is not expected to play in Wednesday's exhibition game against the Trail Blazers.

Favors hasn't taken the court since October 3, and while IT band syndrome isn't typically a serious issue, the extended absence is concerning. Until we get some new info, we're going to consider him questionable for opening night, and with each day spent on the sidelines it's getting increasingly difficult to justify spending an early mid-round selection on Favors. If you do take the plunge on draft day, it would be wise to also invest a late-round selection in Trey Lyles as a handcuff pick.
Oct 19 - 1:19 PM

Derrick Favors (left knee) did not go through the morning shootaround and will not play on Monday vs. the Clippers.

This isn't a surprise considering he was listed as doubtful. The Jazz haven't provided a timetable and he's been out for nearly two weeks, so this is a little concerning. It should be the Trey Lyles show tonight with a sprinkle of Boris Diaw.
Oct 17 - 1:09 PM

Derrick Favors (left knee) is doubtful to suit up for Monday's preseason game against the Clippers.

Favors still hasn't practiced or played since the preseason opener, and with the regular season just a little over a week away, he's now in jeopardy of not being ready for opening night. The Jazz maintain that Favors' injury is not to be considered a long-term issue, but knee injuries for big men are nothing to shrug at. He's still too talented to let him fall out of the middle rounds on draft day, but there will now be some added risk in selecting a guy that only made it through 62 games last year. Trey Lyles will be the primary beneficiary if Favors is forced to miss any regular season action.
Oct 16 - 2:56 PM

Derrick Favors (left knee, IT band syndrome) is still not practicing on Saturday.

It's been nearly two weeks since Favors hit the sidelines with this injury, and there is really no current indication of when he could be back on the floor. Although Quin Snyder does not believe the injury is a long-term concern, the updates have been few and far between and mostly speculative in nature. We're not knocking Favors down our draft boards considerably, but if you're trying to decide between the big man and another target in your draft, you'll want to consider this information closely and carefully before making your choice. Any length of absence for Favors in the regular season would mean more playing time for Trey Lyles as well as Boris Diaw.
Oct 15 - 2:19 PM

Jazz coach Quin Snyder said about Derrick Favors' left knee injury, "It’s got to get less inflamed ... presumably, he’ll be back sooner than later."

Favors is dealing with IT band syndrome, which causes pain when the knee moves laterally and is typically associated with overuse among runners. "I don't think it's anything we're putting a long timetable on," Snyder said. Favors missed 20 games last year, due largely to a nagging back injury, but in his first five seasons he averaged just 5.4 DNPs. We're considering him questionable for opening night.
Oct 13 - 1:35 AM

Derrick Favors (knee) and Rodney Hood (hand) have been ruled out for Wednesday's preseason game vs. the Suns.

Favors is dealing with IT band syndrome in his left knee, and while that typically isn't a major issue, it needs to be noted that Favors does have a history with nagging knee injuries. He's still a worthwhile early-round target, but there's some increased risk here. Hood's injury seems very minor, and it would be shocking if he weren't good to go for Utah's regular-season opener against the Blazers on Oct. 25. Trey Lyles and Joe Johnson will log extended minutes sans Favors and Hood.
Oct 12 - 1:10 PM

Derrick Favors (left knee) did not travel to L.A. for Monday's game vs. the Clippers.

Favors' injury has been described as a knee bruise, but he's also reportedly dealing with IT band syndrome, which causes lateral knee pain and is associated with overuse of the fascia that stabilizes the knee while running. The Jazz haven't expressed any real concern about the issue, so presumably he's just day-to-day, but prospective fantasy owners should keep a close eye out for updates this week.
Oct 9 - 10:28 PM

Derrick Favors (sore left knee) did not practice again on Saturday.

Favors has been dealing with the soreness for a little less than a week, and according to the Salt Lake Tribune, his absence is considered "precautionary." Favors has done conditioning work in both practices, but has been sitting out anything involving contact. For now, there is no reason to adjust your fantasy draft boards.
Oct 8 - 4:37 PM

Derrick Favors (left knee) did not practice on Friday.

It doesn't sound serious, but Favors could miss another preseason game. He did have some knee problems in April, but that was to his right knee and not his current left knee soreness. For now, it shouldn't cost him more than a round of ADP in standard drafts. A little doubt on Favors does make Trey Lyles more attractive as a late-round flier.
Oct 7 - 2:42 PM

Derrick Favors (left knee soreness) and Rodney Hood (left hand sprain) will not play against the Suns on Wednesday night.

They both went through shootaround, so it's not serious. With Favors out, we'll get a long look at Trey Lyles while Boris Diaw could play more, as well. The left knee soreness for Favors shouldn't hurt his fantasy value too much.
