Ish Smith said he's expecting to see a dip in minutes if Reggie Jackson returns to form next season.
Smith played 24.1 minutes per game last season and made 31 starts with Jackson sidelined, posting averages of 9.4 points, 5.2 assists, 2.9 rebounds and 0.8 assists. While Smith is a quality backup PG, he's not a great fantasy asset because he doesn't shoot 3-pointers and isn't the most efficient player from the field or the line. He said that he's been working on his mid-range and 3-point shot, but it's hard to get excited about his outlook with fewer minutes on the horizon. Standard-league owners should look elsewhere in drafts. Aug 3 - 11:30 AM

Ish Smith finished with 11 points, seven assists and two rebounds across 27 minutes in Sunday's 103-90 win against the Grizzlies.

Smith has been tremendous in terms of assists-to-turnover ratio this season, and he has turned up the intensity on the offensive end lately, too. He has double-digit points in a season-high seven consecutive games, averaging 16.9 points, 5.8 assists and 4.2 rebounds per game during the span.
Apr 9 - 10:50 PM

The Pistons fell to the Raptors on Wednesday after a four-day break, despite getting 16 points, six assists, four rebounds and one block from Ish Smith.

Stan Van Gundy strongly hinted that Reggie Jackson (knee) won't play again this season, saying, "This is just the start of a long offseason of getting himself to not only get physically right, but to mentally recharge." That leaves Smith in the driver's seat for the Pistons' final five games.
Apr 5 - 10:34 PM

Ish Smith scored 16 points on 7-of-20 from the field with five assists, four rebounds and two triples in 32 minutes vs. the Bucks on Friday.

The Pistons have lost nine out of their last 11 games, but coach Stan Van Gundy praised Smith for "playing unencumbered every night." SVG added that Smith's "spirit is right," and it looks like he's going to be the starter the rest of the way -- SVG still hasn't decided if Reggie Jackson (knee) will play again this season. If you own Smith, just keep in mind that the Pistons don't play again until Apr. 5.

Mar 31 - 11:59 PM

Ish Smith scored 21 points with six rebounds, five assists, one block and three 3-pointers in 32 minutes against the Nets on Thursday.

He came through in the clutch with seven points in the final three minutes of this game to avoid what would have been a devastating lost to the NBA's worst team. Reggie Jackson has missed the last three games and there's no word of him getting back out there, so Smith should continue to see minutes in the low 30s. He could destroy you in field goal percentage, but Smith is worth owning for anyone needing a point guard.
Mar 30 - 10:27 PM

Ish Smith made another start and Reggie Jackson sat out again on Tuesday, and Smith finished with 19 points and six assists on 7-of-13 shooting.

He's played very well in two straight games and with talk of Jackson being shut down for good this season, Smith is as must-own as they come in all formats right now.
Mar 29 - 12:06 AM

Ish Smith finished with 15 points, six rebounds and five assists over 35 minutes in Monday's 109-95 loss against the Knicks.

Smith was in the starting five for the third consecutive game, and he is expected to get the nod again Tuesday with Reggie Jackson (knee) out for the second end of the back-to-back. Head coach Stan Van Gundy said he wasn't sure if Jackson would be shut down for the season due to his knee pain. Smith's fantasy owners certainly hope so, as Smith would likely finish out as the starter.
Mar 27 - 10:24 PM

Ish Smith will remain in the starting lineup for Monday's game against the Knicks.

This will be Smith's third start in a row, although it's worth pointing out that he hasn't exceeded 28-minute mark in any of those outings. The point guard situation in Detroit has entered value-killing timeshare territory with Reggie Jackson and Smith, so this is something that should be avoided in standard leagues. Joining Smith in the starting five will be Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Marcus Morris, Tobias Harris and Andre Drummond.

Ish Smith scored six points in the starting lineup during a start against the Magic on Friday, adding three rebounds and one turnover in 16 minutes.

This isn't going to end well for the Pistons with two bad losses in a row. While Smith should remain in the first unit for the short term, it's still going to be a timeshare and his usage figures to take a hit with better players around him. He's more of a steals and dimes specialist than a guy fantasy owners should count on the rest of the way.
Mar 24 - 9:27 PM

Ish Smith will remain in the starting lineup Friday night vs. the Magic.

Coach Stan Van Gundy wanted to shake things up on Wednesday and inserted Smith into starting five. Smith finished with nine points, seven assists, three steals, one rebound and one 3-pointer in 25 minutes. Reggie Jackson had just six points and four assists in 19 minutes.
Mar 24 - 12:40 PM

Ish Smith moved into Detroit's starting lineup on Wednesday, where he posted nine points, seven assists, three steals, one rebound and one 3-pointer in 25 minutes.

Stan Van Gundy threatened lineup changes after Tuesday's loss to the lowly Nets, saying, "We'll find out [Wednesday]," and it wasn't an idle threat. The fact that Detroit got destroyed tonight doesn't help Smith's case, but SVG will probably roll with him for at least a few more games. He's a decent pickup if you missed out on guys like Tyler Ulis and Malcolm Brogdon.
Mar 22 - 10:38 PM

Ish Smith will enter the starting lineup for Wednesday's game against the Bulls, sending Reggie Jackson to the bench.

Smith has been heating up over the past month, while Jackson has been trending in the wrong direction, so this could be a lineup change that holds. Through 21 games as a starter this season, Smith owns averages of 10.8 points, 6.4 assists, 1.0 steal and just 1.5 turnovers per game on 43.1 percent shooting, so he's worth a look if those numbers fit your needs. Jackson, on the other hand, is quickly approaching cut candidate territory.
Mar 22 - 7:22 PM

Ish Smith scored 12 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter of Tuesday's tough 98-96 loss to the Nets and finished with seven rebounds, four assists, three steals and a block, and hit 8-of-15 shots in 28 minutes off the bench.

Starter Reggie Jackson played just 20 minutes and hit 3-of-9 shots for seven points and two assists, and gave way to Smith in the fourth quarter when Smith caught fire. Jackson is still the starter and it's still his job to lose, while we've seen Smith turn in games like this one before. As usual, Smith is always worth keeping an eye on and might even be worth a deep-league flier, but Jackson played well in his previous two games and probably isn't in jeopardy of losing his job this deep into the season.
Mar 21 - 10:24 PM

Detroit lost at home on Wednesday despite getting 16 points from backup PG Ish Smith, who made 6-of-9 shots with three rebounds and three assists.

The loss leaves the Pistons into a virtual three-way tie for the No. 7 seed, joining Milwaukee and Miami. The Heat have been terrific over the past few months, and the Bucks are 7-3 in their previous 10 games, so the pressure is on Detroit -- if Smith is playing better than Reggie Jackson on a given night, Stan Van Gundy hasn't hesitated to give the backup more minutes. He's holding steady as a low-end PG since the break.
Mar 16 - 12:42 AM

Ish Smith hit 6-of-12 shots and finished with 12 points, one rebound, three assists and a steal in 21 minutes off the bench on Tuesday.

We were hoping for more with the Pistons getting blown out so badly in this one, but Smith basically split time with starter Reggie Jackson, who hit just 3-of-13 shots in the loss. We're probably well past the point of Smith starting over Jackson still being a real possibility, but a timeshare isn't too much to ask for. However, Ish hasn't played very well lately, averaging just 7.6 points and 5.0 assists in 19.8 minutes over his last five. Now that starting doesn't look like a real possibility for Smith, you might be able to find more value on your waiver wire.
