Ish Smith finished with 15 points, six rebounds and five assists over 35 minutes in Monday's 109-95 loss against the Knicks.
Smith was in the starting five for the third consecutive game, and he is expected to get the nod again Tuesday with Reggie Jackson (knee) out for the second end of the back-to-back. Head coach Stan Van Gundy said he wasn't sure if Jackson would be shut down for the season due to his knee pain. Smith's fantasy owners certainly hope so, as Smith would likely finish out as the starter. Mar 27 - 10:24 PM

Date:

Ish Smith will remain in the starting lineup for Monday's game against the Knicks.

This will be Smith's third start in a row, although it's worth pointing out that he hasn't exceeded 28-minute mark in any of those outings. The point guard situation in Detroit has entered value-killing timeshare territory with Reggie Jackson and Smith, so this is something that should be avoided in standard leagues. Joining Smith in the starting five will be Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Marcus Morris, Tobias Harris and Andre Drummond.

Ish Smith scored six points in the starting lineup during a start against the Magic on Friday, adding three rebounds and one turnover in 16 minutes.

This isn't going to end well for the Pistons with two bad losses in a row. While Smith should remain in the first unit for the short term, it's still going to be a timeshare and his usage figures to take a hit with better players around him. He's more of a steals and dimes specialist than a guy fantasy owners should count on the rest of the way.
Mar 24 - 9:27 PM

Ish Smith will remain in the starting lineup Friday night vs. the Magic.

Coach Stan Van Gundy wanted to shake things up on Wednesday and inserted Smith into starting five. Smith finished with nine points, seven assists, three steals, one rebound and one 3-pointer in 25 minutes. Reggie Jackson had just six points and four assists in 19 minutes.
Mar 24 - 12:40 PM

Ish Smith moved into Detroit's starting lineup on Wednesday, where he posted nine points, seven assists, three steals, one rebound and one 3-pointer in 25 minutes.

Stan Van Gundy threatened lineup changes after Tuesday's loss to the lowly Nets, saying, "We'll find out [Wednesday]," and it wasn't an idle threat. The fact that Detroit got destroyed tonight doesn't help Smith's case, but SVG will probably roll with him for at least a few more games. He's a decent pickup if you missed out on guys like Tyler Ulis and Malcolm Brogdon.
Mar 22 - 10:38 PM

Ish Smith will enter the starting lineup for Wednesday's game against the Bulls, sending Reggie Jackson to the bench.

Smith has been heating up over the past month, while Jackson has been trending in the wrong direction, so this could be a lineup change that holds. Through 21 games as a starter this season, Smith owns averages of 10.8 points, 6.4 assists, 1.0 steal and just 1.5 turnovers per game on 43.1 percent shooting, so he's worth a look if those numbers fit your needs. Jackson, on the other hand, is quickly approaching cut candidate territory.
Mar 22 - 7:22 PM

Ish Smith scored 12 of his 16 points in the fourth quarter of Tuesday's tough 98-96 loss to the Nets and finished with seven rebounds, four assists, three steals and a block, and hit 8-of-15 shots in 28 minutes off the bench.

Starter Reggie Jackson played just 20 minutes and hit 3-of-9 shots for seven points and two assists, and gave way to Smith in the fourth quarter when Smith caught fire. Jackson is still the starter and it's still his job to lose, while we've seen Smith turn in games like this one before. As usual, Smith is always worth keeping an eye on and might even be worth a deep-league flier, but Jackson played well in his previous two games and probably isn't in jeopardy of losing his job this deep into the season.
Mar 21 - 10:24 PM

Detroit lost at home on Wednesday despite getting 16 points from backup PG Ish Smith, who made 6-of-9 shots with three rebounds and three assists.

The loss leaves the Pistons into a virtual three-way tie for the No. 7 seed, joining Milwaukee and Miami. The Heat have been terrific over the past few months, and the Bucks are 7-3 in their previous 10 games, so the pressure is on Detroit -- if Smith is playing better than Reggie Jackson on a given night, Stan Van Gundy hasn't hesitated to give the backup more minutes. He's holding steady as a low-end PG since the break.
Mar 16 - 12:42 AM

Ish Smith hit 6-of-12 shots and finished with 12 points, one rebound, three assists and a steal in 21 minutes off the bench on Tuesday.

We were hoping for more with the Pistons getting blown out so badly in this one, but Smith basically split time with starter Reggie Jackson, who hit just 3-of-13 shots in the loss. We're probably well past the point of Smith starting over Jackson still being a real possibility, but a timeshare isn't too much to ask for. However, Ish hasn't played very well lately, averaging just 7.6 points and 5.0 assists in 19.8 minutes over his last five. Now that starting doesn't look like a real possibility for Smith, you might be able to find more value on your waiver wire.
Mar 14 - 9:52 PM

Ish Smith scored four points with three rebounds, six assists, one steal and one turnover in 18 minutes against the Knicks on Saturday.

The "Start Ish" movement has likely cooled off for at least another week. Reggie Jackson is playing well and the Pistons have won two straight. If you were stashing Smith as an upside stash on your bench, it's probably time to place your chips on another bet.
Mar 11 - 8:44 PM

Ish Smith came off the bench and played just 17 minutes on Thursday, but still had 12 points, three rebounds and three assists on 5-of-9 shooting.

Reggie Jackson played well in this one, especially when it mattered late, and earned some praise from coach Stan Van Gundy. It appears the window for Smith to steal Jackson's job is closing, but we still expect him to play more minutes than this on most nights. SVG just stuck with the hot hand tonight and relied on his starters to beat the Cavs.
Mar 9 - 10:48 PM

Ish Smith scored 11 points with four rebounds, 13 assists and one block in 23 minutes off the bench against the 76ers on Saturday.

He was terrific and he did outplay Reggie Jackson in this game. There could be a lineup change on the way, but Jackson played well enough to keep his job for now. Plus, coach Stan Van Gundy really had Jackson's back before the game. For now, Smith looks like he'll be a backup and get minutes in the 20s. He's actually been a top-100 player in his last 10 games, so he's making a case to be owned in standard leagues thanks to his 6.2 assists per game in that span.
Mar 4 - 9:17 PM

Coach Stan Van Gundy is considering bumping Reggie Jackson to the bench and starting Ish Smith at point guard Saturday vs. the Sixers.

Smith averaged 9.3 points (on 48.5 percent shooting), 5.7 assists and 3.2 rebounds in February. Jackson averaged 10.1 points (on just 37.4 percent shooting), 5.4 assists and 1.6 rebounds. It would likely be an uncomfortable switch considering Jackson is making $10 million per season than Smith, but with Detroit fighting for a playoff spot, the Pistons have to play their best players. Smith has been better than the slumping Jackson for some time now.
Mar 3 - 1:10 PM

Ish Smith scored eight points with one rebound, three assists and two steals in 19 minutes against the Pelicans on Wednesday.

Reggie Jackson may be in the biggest slump of any player in the NBA, but coach Stan Van Gundy may not want to make a switch. The Pistons continue to make a run with their second unit to keep them in games, but they're in a heck of a lot of holes due to the first unit struggling so much. Smith's upside isn't too high, so he's only worth an add if you really need a point guard.
Mar 1 - 10:59 PM

Ish Smith played 29 minutes and hit 5-of-13 shots for 12 points, seven assists, seven steals and a block with just two turnovers in Tuesday's 120-113 overtime win against the Blazers.

Smith disappeared in his previous game after going off for five points and 16 dimes in the game prior, but was clearly favored over starter Reggie Jackson tonight, who played just 24 minutes and finished with 10 points and four assists. Jackson is still the starter and is worth owning in most leagues, but stashing Smith right now makes perfect sense. Just expect some inconsistency as long as he's coming off the bench behind Jackson.
