Alec Burks returned from his left shoulder injury to score 21 points with six rebounds, two assists, one steal, one block and six turnovers in 29 minutes during Sunday's exhibition.
Burks made 7-of-14 FGs and 7-of-9 FTs, and he made the highlight reel with a behind-the-back dribble to blow past Kobe Bryant and split two defenders for a layup in the second quarter. Utah needs another reliable ball-handler to take some pressure off Trey Burke, and Burks' offensive versatility makes him an intriguing late-round option at SG. Oct 20 - 12:16 AM

Date:

Alec Burks (left shoulder) is probable for Sunday's exhibition against the Lakers.

He has been trying to recover from a bruised shoulder and appears to have beaten out the minor injury very quickly. He averaged 14.2 points, 3.4 assists, and 2.8 rebounds last season and we expect those numbers to elevate with a bigger role under new coach Quin Snyder. Burks is a solid late-round pick in standard leagues.

Alec Burks (bruised left shoulder) will not play in Friday's exhibition game against the Clippers.

The injury is not considered serious, but there's just no reason to risk anything during preseason. Burks averaged 14.2 points, 3.4 assists, and 2.8 rebounds while shooting 80.4 percent from the charity stripe as a starter last season, and the fact that he fits in well with coach Quin Snyder's system is encouraging for his fantasy value. We like Burks as a late-round selection with some upside.
Oct 17 - 4:27 PM

Alec Burks (shoulder) will not play against the Lakers on Thursday.

Burks has been playing well in new coach Quin Snyder's new system and appears poised for a breakout season. His shoulder injury is minor so potential fantasy owners should keep an eye Burks as the later rounds approach in drafts.
Oct 16 - 3:55 PM

Alec Burks (shoulder) is a game-time decision to play against the Lakers on Thursday.

He just has a bruised shoulder and the Jazz not ruling him out confirms he's just dealing with a minor issue. Burks has created a lot of buzz for fitting in nicely in coach Quin Snyder's system and he was also outstanding in the starting lineup last season. A breakout could be coming.
Oct 15 - 2:29 PM

Alec Burks (bruised left shoulder) participated in non-contact portions of Tuesday's practice.

He's day-to-day and this shouldn't impact his status for Utah's season opener, which is still a few weeks away. Burks has quietly moved up fantasy draft boards during the preseason, going from an occasional flier pick to a solid late-round target.
Oct 14 - 4:33 PM

Alec Burks (bruised left shoulder) will not play against the Clippers on Monday.

It doesn't sound serious and hopefully he'll be ready to go for the weekend. Burks has been one of the trendiest players we've been following this month and definitely will benefit in coach Quin Snyder's system. He's still a nice target in the late rounds. We'll let you know if any additional info emerges about the severity of his injury. As for tonight, Rodney Hood, Dahntay Jones or even Dante Exum could start.
Oct 13 - 7:17 PM

Coach Quin Snyder said he wants Alec Burks to be aggressive this season.

"Taking the ball to the basket is his strength," Snyder said. "So we want him to look to make plays. We want him to suck people in." Among non-point guards playing at least 20 minutes per game, only Eric Bledsoe had more drives per 48 minutes than Burks las season. He also shot a respectable 47.3 percent on drives, but his teammates only added 1.8 points per game off his drives. He's a fantastic target and could break out in the new.
Oct 10 - 9:54 AM

Alec Burks scored 20 points against the Blazers on Thursday with one rebound, two assists and two steals on 7-of-12 from the field.

He missed a couple big free throws down the stretch, but looked good throughout the game. Burks has solidified his role as a starter and he'll see a sizable increase in playing time -- he played 37 minutes tonight. Burks is a fantastic target late in drafts and his arrow is pointing up.
Oct 10 - 12:41 AM

Alec Burks started at shooting guard on Tuesday and hit 4-of-10 shots for 12 points, four rebounds, one assists, four steals and five turnovers.

He's not normally a turnover machine, but a lack of 3-pointers historically is a bit of a concern, and he didn't hit one tonight. But as long as he's starting for the Jazz, he should be a solid late value pick in fantasy drafts.
Oct 8 - 1:22 AM

Coach Quin Snyder said Alec Burks is a "good fit" for his team.

There are not many players making headlines in training camp like Alec Burks. The Jazz have very little depth on the wing and they're going to need more scorers to help Gordon Hayward. There's a decent chance Burks becomes a 20 points-per-game scorer this season, so fantasy owners should have his name highlighted on their draft boards.
Oct 6 - 10:03 AM

Gordon Hayward said he's been impressed most with Alec Burks, Rudy Gobert and Trevor Booker at training camp.

It's been just about all positives with Burks and he seems like a great bet for a big year in Utah. The Jazz are extremely shorthanded on the wing and he should be able to increase his 29.8 minutes per game from after the break in 2013-14. It's also worth mentioning he shot 48.0 percent as a starter and 45.3 percent off the bench last season. Don't sleep on him.
Oct 3 - 7:47 PM

Alec Burks said on Wednesday that he likes coach Quin Snyder's new offense.

"I feel like Quin plays my style," Burks said. "He wants to play with pace, open space. I do that for a living. I love to do that." He still hasn't been named as the official starter at shooting guard, but just about all signs suggest he'll be in that slot. Based on how he posted a 51.2 effective field goal percentage and a 23.1 usage rate after the break last season, Burks could have a breakout season.
Oct 1 - 3:26 PM

Alec Burks is hopeful that he can reach a contract extension with the Jazz this summer.

If no deal is reached, Burks will be headed toward restricted free agency in 2015. "I hope it does [get done]," he said. "I saw it work out with [Derrick Favors] before the season. I saw it work out with Gordon [Hayward] after the season." The Jazz are also trying to extend Enes Kanter before the season starts, thus locking up their young core for the foreseeable future.
Sep 30 - 6:32 PM

The Jazz are in contract extension talks with Alec Burks.

He had a solid season last year and entered training camp with eight extra pounds of muscle on his frame. Burks is probably the best weapon for breaking down defenses and could be in for a major role this season. He shot a very respectable 35.0 percent from beyond the arc last season and upped his steals per game to 0.9, so he could have a breakout this year. Don't forget about him on draft day.
