Nolan Smith, an unrestricted free agent, will not return to the Blazers next season.
"They have a path they want to go down, and it's pretty obvious I'm not on it right now," Smith said during his exit interview. Smith added the team made it "pretty clear" that they don't want him to return, and now Smith will be playing with a chip on his shoulder wherever he lands. Right now, he's best known as the guy drafted ahead of Kenneth Faried in 2011. Apr 30 - 8:35 AM

Blazers guard Nolan Smith has been diagnosed with a partial tear in his patella tendon, ending his 2012-13 season.

An MRI revealed the injury and it could hardly have come at a worse time for Smith, who is heading into unrestricted free agency this summer. He'll try to fill a productive niche off an NBA bench next season, and he remains an unlikely fantasy option.

Nolan Smith expects to leave the Blazers as a free agent this summer, possibly for the Bulls, Hawks or Thunder.

"This just wasn't the right situation for me, and I think everybody can see that," said Smith, who is averaging 2.8 points in seven minutes per game this season. He feels that he's been unfairly buried on Portland's bench, while incurring the fans' anger simply because he was drafted one pick ahead of Kenneth Faried (to which he added, "I don't blame them at all.") He'll need to prove himself before earning fantasy consideration next year.

Blazers GM Neil Olshey said that if he knew this summer how competitive his team would be this season, he "would have made a bigger investment in the bench."

That's a slap in the face for the Blazers, who are playing .500 basketball despite having one of the worst benches in NBA history. Nolan Smith's minutes as a backup PG on Saturday were so bad that beat writer Jason Quick wrote afterward, "I'm not sure we will ever see Smith play meaningful minutes again in a Blazers uniform." It's good news for fantasy owners, since production is concentrated among just a few guys, but at some point exhaustion is bound to set it.
Jan 20 - 10:13 AM

The Blazers recalled Nolan Smith and Will Barton from the D-League.

The move was expected as both players were only in the minor league to participate in the D-League showcase.
Jan 9 - 2:10 PM

Nolan Smith and Will Barton are expected to rejoin the Blazers before Thursday's game against the Heat.

Both players are currently participating in the D-League showcase and aren't expected to spend extended time in the D-League.
Jan 8 - 9:51 AM

Nolan Smith has been assigned to the Blazer's D-League affiliate.

It's the first time Smith has been sent to join the Idaho Stampede. He has fallen way behind Ronnie Price to be Damian Lillard's backup and has no value in fantasy leagues.

Nolan Smith (upper respiratory infection) will return to the lineup Wednesday.

Smith missed three games with the illness, but is a non-option given his limited minutes and role with the Blazers.

Nolan Smith (upper respiratory infection) will not play on Saturday.

Smith is playing just 8.8 minutes per game and has no value while the Blazers are healthy.

Nolan Smith (illness) did not participate in shootaround on Thursday.

The backup guard sounds very iffy for Thursday's game. Smith has appeared in 15 games this season, averaging 2.5 points per game.

Nolan Smith (illness) missed his second straight practice Wednesday.

Smith's status for Thursday's game against the Nuggets is uncertain, but he offers little to no fantasy impact.

Nolan Smith sat out Tuesday's practice due to illness.

He has two days to recover before Thursday's game, but his availability won't impact fantasy owners.

Nolan Smith, Joel Freeland, Will Barton and Victor Claver could all see time in the D-League.

In a larger sense, it speaks to the ineptitude of the Blazers bench and how bad they've been. Smith is looking like a draft bust, and both Freeland and Claver haven't given the team anything this year. Barton has looked good in limited run, but all four guys could use more experience.

Nolan Smith will be inactive for Friday's game against the Rockets.

Victor Claver will be active for the Blazers to help them on the wing, but he won't get enough playing time to matter in fantasy leagues. Ronnie Price has played well so far this year and has logged some minutes at shooting guard while backing up super-rookie Damian Lillard.

Nolan Smith (knee) logged 10 minutes off Portland's bench on Thursday, scoring two points with two rebounds and two assists.

Smith's knee injury isn't a concern, but even at full health he's unlikely to be part of the regular season rotation -- the return of Ronnie Price (ankle) will bump him to the bottom of the depth chart.
