Kyle O'Quinn posted a versatile line off the bench on Friday, scoring seven points on 2-of-4 shooting (including a three) with six rebounds, one assist and three steals in 23 minutes.
People can easily get blinded by the low minutes but he improved his season-long per-game value from top 100-115 (9/8 cat) to top 90-105 (9/8 cat) after tonight. That he's returning this value in just 19.3 mpg is a reminder of his mid-round upside if he can step into a 24-plus minute role. Dec 19 - 11:25 PM

Date:

Kyle O'Quinn logged 19 minutes off the bench on Monday, scoring two points on 1-of-1 shooting with six rebounds and one block.

O'Quinn had a quiet game on Saturday but his minutes are on the lower end of where they should be on most nights. In 28 games to end last season he returned top-80 value in just 22 mpg, so owners will probably want to take the long-view here and not let two bad games shake them up. In just 18.7 mpg this season, he's a top 100-115 play as well.
Dec 16 - 2:05 AM

Kyle O'Quinn moved back to the bench on Saturday against the Hawks and did not score with one rebound, one steal and one block in 12 minutes.

O'Quinn could be prone to slow nights as a backup and he's also injury prone and foul prone, too. Once you get past that he has a 2-3 month record of top 60-90 play in standards late last season in a low-minute role, and this season he's a top 90-100 value per-game over 11 contests in just 18.6 mpg. Clearly that's an uncomfortable situation, but it's the same upside equation that Gorgui Dieng and Rudy Gobert have exhibited -- with good or even great fantasy 'floors' with upside beyond that.
Dec 13 - 10:02 PM

Kyle O'Quinn double-doubled against the Hawks on Friday during an 87-81 loss with 14 points, 10 rebounds, two assists and three turnovers in 33 minutes.

Nikola Vucevic (back) is getting closer to a return, so O'Quinn's likely going to lose some value soon. He's a very good shot blocker and could have some low-end value in deeper leagues, though.
Dec 12 - 11:30 PM

Kyle O'Quinn started again as Nikola Vucevic missed his fifth straight game with a back injury, and had 10 points, six rebounds, four assists, a steal, two blocks and a 3-pointer on 4-of-15 shooting.

The poor shooting was nothing to write home about, but he's playing well in Vuc's absence, averaging 12.6 points, 4.8 rebounds, 1.0 steals and 1.2 blocks over his last five. Once Vucevic is back, expect O'Quinn's production to take a solid hit.
Dec 10 - 9:48 PM

Kyle O'Quinn is set to become a restricted free agent in July, and his recent play should help him command the attention of several NBA teams.

He has been filling in admirably for Nikola Vucevic (back), and before Saturday's game he had a player efficiency rating of 26.2, much better than the league average of 15.0. "I approach it the same way as if I knew how much I'll make next year," O'Quinn said. "I'm big on my faith, and I think God has a plan for me. And whatever happens, happens." While O'Quinn's fantasy value is going to take a huge hit when Vucevic likely returns on Wednesday, owners in deep leagues would be wise to hold onto him in the hope that he maintains a decent role with the Magic. Regardless, it is becoming clear that he is going to get paid this summer, and the Magic have no reason not to do everything they can to keep the versatile big man.
Dec 7 - 9:19 AM

Kyle O'Quinn struggled with foul trouble in a start in place of Nikola Vucevic (back) on Saturday, finishing with 13 points, two rebounds, four assists, one steal, one block and one 3-pointer in 18 minutes.

Owners who took a flier on him have to be feeling disappointed after this line, because if he wasn't in foul trouble he would have been on the way to a very nice outing. Nikola Vucevic (back) could return for the Magic's next game on Wednesday, so there is no reason for owners in standard leagues to burn a waiver on O'Quinn. However, given Channing Frye's recent struggles, it is not out of the question that O'Quinn will remain a key part of the rotation and he should be monitored closely going forward.
Dec 7 - 12:53 AM

Kyle O'Quinn was effective in another start on Friday against the Jazz, scoring 13 points on 5-of-7 shooting with four rebounds, one assist and two blocks in 18 foul-plagued minutes.

Yes it's a small seven-game sample size but he's already up to his old tricks returning top-90 value in just 16 mpg this season. And because he did that and more consistently for 2-3 months last year, this is a situation with a nice floor and plenty of upside. Owners in standard leagues would be wise not to sleep any longer than they have already if he's still available.
Dec 6 - 2:47 AM

Kyle O'Quinn has been fined $15,000 by the league for his flagrant 2 foul on Blake Griffin.

He's not going to get a suspension, but his wallet will be punished. O'Quinn has been thrust into the starting lineup with Nikola Vucevic (back) sidelined, and he should be owned in most leagues for his ability to block shots and rebound at a high-level while providing solid percentages.
Dec 4 - 5:59 PM

Kyle O'Quinn was ejected from Wednesday's game for a hard foul on Blake Griffin.

He probably won't be suspended for this one, but the ejection was deserved. O'Quinn finished with six points, one rebound and one steal in seven minutes. Nikola Vucevic (back) shouldn't be out much longer, but feel free to give KOQ a look for short-term value.
Dec 4 - 1:09 AM

Kyle O'Quinn erupted in a surprise start for Nikola Vucevic (back spasms) on Tuesday, scoring 21 points with 11 rebounds, one assist, two steals and one block in just 27 minutes.

O'Quinn drained 9-of-16 field goals and all three of his free throws, and is worth scooping up if he's floating on your waiver wire. Channing Frye has been struggling lately and there's enough room for O'Quinn to hold value even if he's stuck in a bench role, as he's capable of racking up defensive stats and displayed newfound 3-point range throughout the preseason.
Dec 3 - 1:14 AM

Klye O'Quinn will draw the start in place of Nikola Vucevic (back spasms) for Tuesday's game against the Warriors.

There is no word on how much time Vucevic will miss, but owners in deep leagues should give O'Quinn a long look as a speculative add. O'Quinn can be a serviceable big when he gets the minutes, so there is a lot to like here. Stay tuned.
Dec 2 - 10:06 PM

Kyle O'Quinn played just 13 minutes in Friday's 15-point loss to the Pacers, scoring nine points on 3-of-4 shooting with two rebounds and one block.

O'Quinn's low minutes don't stand out quite so much after missing the bulk of the year with an ankle injury. Owners that recently made the add should see this out for another game or two before weighing in with a drop.
Nov 29 - 2:57 AM

Magic big man Kyle O'Quinn (ankle) had six points, seven rebounds, three assists and one steal in just 12 minutes off the bench in his return on Wednesday.

This was just O'Quinn's second game of the season and he's missed nearly a month with his injury, so it's not surprising to see his minutes so limited. Aaron Gordon's fractured foot has opened up more minutes in the Magic frontcourt and O'Quinn has enough upside to be watched very closely as a free agent pickup in all fantasy formats. He's even worth stashing now if you have a bench player you don't mind cutting loose.
Nov 26 - 10:00 PM

Kyle O'Quinn (ankle) will be available for Wednesday's game vs. Golden State.

O'Quinn's conditioning might not be up to speed since he hasn't played in over three weeks, and he'll be coming off the bench behind Nikola Vucevic and Channing Frye. O'Quinn had a very impressive preseason and could emerge as fantasy factor if he continues to knock down 3-pointers, but most owners can take a wait-and-see approach as he works himself back into game shape.
