The Knicks are expected to re-sign Chris Smith before training camp next season.
Chris, J.R.'s brother, was signed by the Knicks before training camp, but a knee injury derailed his season before it ever got started. It's not clear if any other team is interested in J.R.'s brother, but the Knicks appear to be lining up a "package deal" with Chris and J.R. if the latter re-signs. May 20 - 8:19 AM

Chris Smith, J.R.'s brother, is reportedly a "favorite" to make the Knicks next season.

Chris was in training camp with the Knicks but had to have knee surgery, so the team wound up waiving him in late October. However, in late February there was a report that the team still intended to sign J.R.'s brother, so it looks like that is still a plausible scenario.

The Knicks still intend to sign Chris Smith, the brother of J.R., a source told Knicks Journal.

Smith was signed to a training camp contract and was never a lock to make the team from day one. Smith isn't scheduled to resume basketball activities until April, so maybe the Knicks will give him another look in training camp before the 2013/14 season.

Knicks waived G Chris Smith.

J.R.'s brother had knee surgery and didn't have much of a chance to make the team even if he was healthy.

J.R. Smith's brother, Chris, will be sidelined three to six months after being scheduled for surgery on his left patella tendon.

That means he won't be making the Knicks roster, as the news keeps getting worse for J.R. He wants to start, but Mike Woodson seems intent on bringing him off the bench.

Chris Smith has a "good chance" to make the Knicks roster, a source tells Marc Berman of the NY Post.

We'll take this with a major grain of salt, though this is the second report that states Smith has a realistic chance to make the team. Berman cites the fact that the Knicks will be without Iman Shumpert (knee surgery) to start the season as reasoning for Smith to make the roster, but it's going to take an unbelievable training camp for Smith to stick with the club after he shot under 30 percent in summer league.

Updating a previous item, Chris Smith's contract with the Knicks is for two years and is partially guaranteed.

Not only did the team give J.R.'s brother a two-year deal, they also gave him one that is partially guaranteed. According to beat writer Al Iannazzone, there is a "good shot" that Smith will be on the roster when the season begins. Smith did not start a single summer league game and shot under 30 percent during his audition. We think it's fair to say that some eyebrows should be raised here, but we can't say it surprises us at all.

Chris Smith, the younger brother of guard J.R. Smith, has signed with the Knicks, the team announced Wednesday.

Smith, a shooting guard from Louisville, played for the Knicks' Summer League team in Las Vegas. With Raymond Felton, Jason Kidd and Pablo Prigioni ahead of him, Smith's road to the NBA is definitely blocked in New York. A source familiar with the situation said the Knicks acquired Smith so they could assign his rights to their D-League team, the Erie BayHawks.
