Guard Steve Smith will announce his retirement from the NBA on Friday.
He was past the point of having fantasy value anyway, and is almost as well known for his character and generosity as he was for his hoop skills. Wed, Sep 28, 2005 09:35:00 PM

Heat acquired guard Steve Smith from the Bobcats for forward Malik Allen and cash.

Smith's arrival should finally lead to Wesley Person's release. Smith probably won't get a lot of playing time, but he'll be available to take big shots when needed.

Steve Smith missed tonight's game with the flu.

Kareem Rush benefitted from his absence with 20 points in the win. Once the Bobcats are back at full strength, Rush will probably go back to a less prominent role in the offense.

Foregoing a chance to play more and chase a playoff spot, Steve Smith asked the Bobcats not to trade him to the Nets.

GM Bernie Bickerstaff said Thursday that the Nets had inquired about Smith's availability. Bickerstaff, though, told Smith he wouldn't be traded without his blessing, and Smith wasn't interested, citing, among other things, Richard Jefferson's injury as a reason he wouldn't want to be there, even though it's RJ's injury that opens up the need for a deal.

Steve Smith saw his first action since Dec. 29 tonight, and had 11 points in the loss.

He played out of necessity, after point guard Brevin Knight was injured. Smitty won't have much fantasy value this year, unless the Cats suffer a lot more injuries.

GM/Coach Bernie Bickerstaff said that if a contending team was interested in Steve Smith, he'd look to accomodate Smith if he wanted to go.

"If there was a contender interested in Smitty, that would be his choice," Bickerstaff said. "My (position on) Smitty is totally out of respect for him; if he could get another ring." Right now, Bickerstaff said he's not looking to make any deals. His other veteran who becomes trade-eligible on Wednesday is Brevin Knight, and the coach said Knight isn't going anywhere.

Steve Smith had another solid effort in just 15 minutes of clock tonight, finishing with 11 points on 4-of-6 shooting (3-of-4 from deep), four rebounds and two assists.

While the Bobcats want to get their young guys minutes, Smitty is forcing coach Bickerstaff to play him. If you need threes, he could be a nice source of them. With Gerald Wallace struggling thus far, you would have to think that Smith is going to get decent minutes until Wallace turns it around.

Steve Smith is averaging 14.5 points and 23.5 minutes and is shooting 57 percent from the field.

Coach Bernie Bickerstaff did not intend to use the 35-year-old veteran this much when he signed him. "You're tempted to have Steve in there," Bickerstaff said of the crutch that Smith represents. "But that's personal -- it's not (always what's best) for the franchise."
