Kevin McHale has withdrawn his name from the Kings head coaching search, according to Marc Stein of ESPN
McHale was reportedly the Kings top targets, so Sacramento will have to go back to the drawing board now. McHale could be linked to the Pacers due to the presence of former teammate and team president Larry Bird if Indiana moves on from current head coach Frank Vogel, so McHale is likely to get a look elsewhere. Kevin McHale has interviewed with the Kings for their open head coach position.

McHale would be appealing on a number of levels, most notably because he's a a successful ex-NBA big man who could be capable of connecting with DeMarcus Cousins. McHale's next head coaching job will likely come exactly on his terms, and it's unknown if the Kings would be willing to go that far in order to bring him in.

Kevin McHale "has emerged on the list of known candidates" for Sacramento's vacant coaching position.

The two sides of have had "exploratory talks" about the gig, but it's not clear what that actually means. So far, the Kings have only completed one "full-scale interview" with Sam Mitchell, but the team is expected to ramp up its search in the coming weeks. Names like Vinny Del Negro, Mike Woodson, Mark Jackson, Nate McMillan, Jeff Hornacek and Luke Walton are also believed to be on the team's radar.

Celtics GM Danny Ainge offered Kevin McHale a job shortly after he was fired by the Rockets, but McHale is in "wait and see mode."

"He appreciated me reaching out to him, but I think he's just going to lay low," Ainge said. "He's probably got bigger and better things to do — or more relaxing things to do." McHale's sudden firing led coaches around the league to voice their support for him. If he wants another coaching job, he'll get one.

Kevin McHale did not blame the Rockets management for deciding to move on, and acknowledged that things weren't working during the first 11 games of the season.

"We were starting to address some of the issues that were the reason I was let go," McHale said. "We just weren’t playing with any juice, with any rhythm. We haven’t been able to get the problems solved. We probably had more meetings in last six weeks than in my previous four years here. It wasn’t working." GM Daryl Morey said it was a tough decision to let McHale go, but he felt the players were no longer responding to him, and the bottom line is that the Rockets' brass will continue to make changes until they return to their winning ways.

The Rockets have reportedly fired head coach Kevin McHale.

The Rockets had gotten off to an unsatisfactory 4-7 start, and McHale had seemingly begin to lose a hold of the locker room which put him in the hot seat. J.B. Bickerstaff will now become the interim head coach while the Rockets search for a permanent solution, with assistant coach Chris Finch being promoted to associate head coach. Bickerstaff will be tasked with restoring the Rockets "defensive mind set," which is something the team has struggled with this season. McHale had hinted that he was contemplating sending Ty Lawson to the bench, so it'll be interesting to see what happens now that he's no longer in charge. McHale leaves the Rockets with a record of 193-130, which is the highest winning percentage amongst any head coach Houston's history.

Kevin McHale said he's worried about the current state of the Rockets.

The Rockets fell to 4-4 following a bad loss to the Nets on Wednesday and McHale wasn't happy following the game. "I'm worried about our team right now." McHale added that he's not sure if the team is focused, so there's a good chance we could see some changes in his rotation over the next few games.

Unrestricted free agent LaMarcus Aldridge was "floored in a good way" with the Rockets' analytics.

A lot of folks don't quite understand what analytics exactly mean and perhaps no person is more associated with analytics to help build a team than general manager Daryl Morey. The Rockets are going to have to move some pieces around -- Terrence Jones for sure -- in order to hand LMA.

The Rockets have made the 18th pick in the draft available for a trade.

Their primary goal tonight is to shed salary, so expect this pick to be packaged with other players to drop their cap number. Terrence Jones figures to be at the top of the list with the Rockets already having Donatas Motiejunas and Clint Capela on the roster.

Kevin McHale said his team is "going to go out and fight" in Game 4 on Monday.

"I just got on their ass yesterday. If you’re going to feel sorry for yourself, don’t show up," McHale said. "You got to come out swinging. I can’t say a lot about it." The Rockets are going to have to do a lot of things right to get a win. Most importantly, they need to get shots at the rim and remember not to leave Stephen Curry open. Both are easier said than done.

The Rockets are not likely to rest players down the stretch this season.

This is fantastic news for owners of James Harden, Terrence Jones or any other Rocket. The team is tied for the No. 3 seed with the Blazers and are just 1.5 games behind the Grizzlies, so they have a lot of incentive to go for it.

Houston Rockets coach Kevin McHale signed a three-year contract extension on Wednesday believed to be around $13 million.

The Rockets are currently sitting at fourth place in the loaded Western Conference, but given how many injuries that the Rockets have dealt with McHale has done a fantastic job. Houston may also be in the news again shortly if they are able to snag Josh Smith when he clears waivers Wednesday evening. Stay tuned.

The Rockets are expected to use the remaining preseason games as a primer for the regular season, according to coach Kevin McHale.

There are a lot of unclear position battles in Houston. Tarik Black looks to be the backup center, Kosta Papanikolaou saw some extended run as a stretch four on Sunday and could get in the rotation, Ish Smith has been working as a backup point guard and the second-unit wings are a bit of a toss up.

The Houston Rockets reportedly have a backup plan if they don't land Chris Bosh.

The main goal is to land Bosh and retain restricted free agent Chandler Parsons, but the team reportedly has other options in case they lose out on Bosh. The team has been in talks with the agents for Trevor Ariza, Luol Deng, and Paul Pierce and would likely attempt to use either their $5.3 million mid-level exception or the space created if they decline to match Parson's offer sheet with the Dallas Mavericks. There are more than a few moving pieces floating around here, but it seems like the Rockets have a Plan A, B, and C.
Thu, Jul 10, 2014 12:22:00 PM

The Rockets have fired assistant coach Dean Cooper.

Cooper will take the fall for the Rockets early exit from the playoffs and his defensive schemes will be blamed. Kevin McHale kept his job, so Cooper looks like a sacrificial lamb here.
