It's being reported that Timberwolves coach Rick Adelman is expected to opt out of the final year of his contract with Minnesota following the conclusion of this season.
According to a report from ESPN's Marc Stein, Adelman "has convinced more than a few folks in team circles that he's going to invoke his right to opt out of the final year... and step away for good this summer." With the Timberwolves set to miss the playoffs yet again this season, perhaps Adelman is growing tired of "developing" players. Adelman is a Hall of Fame shoe-in as one of the NBA's most winning coaches of all time (currently ranked eighth with 1038 wins) and if he is to retire, the Timberwolves organization, and the NBA as a whole will surely miss him. Coach Rick Adelman will not be with the team for personal reasons, according to the Houston Chronicle.

Coach Terry Porter will run the show tonight and should handle things like Adelman. The Wolves' rotation was a total mess on Saturday due to Kevin Love (quad) being out, so it should be interesting to see how Porter handles the minutes at the shooting guard, small forward and power forward spots. We'll pass along the info on Love's status as soon as it is available.

Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor confirmed that Rick Adelman will coach the Wolves for the upcoming season.

"Yes, he did [say he’s coming back]," Taylor said. Adelman will have Kevin Martin back this year and the team will look to improve on their woeful 30.5 percent from downtown. They also ranked just 25th in the NBA in offensive efficiency, so they've got some work to do and will need Kevin Love to stay healthy.

Flip Saunders said he's "very confident" that Rick Adelman will coach the Wolves this season.

Adelman missed time last year due to his wife's health issues, but it seems that storm has passed. "He's excited about everything we're doing right now," Saunders said. The Wolves recently hired GM Milt Newton, and they'll enter training camp with Kevin Love, Ricky Rubio and Chase Budinger all healthy, playing alongside new additions Corey Brewer, Kevin Martin.

Wolves assistant coach Bobby Jackson is confident that Rick Adelman will remain with the team this season.

All signs have pointed toward Adelman returning, but uncertainty about his wife's health has left room for doubt. "He’s a private guy — he’s not telling anyone what he’s going to do," Jackson said. "But if the opportunity is there for me to come out and coach and learn from him, even if it’s one year, that’s huge for me." Jackson also touched on the status of rookie Shabazz Muhammad, saying, "If he can play defense, he's going to play."

When asked if Rick Adelman would return as the Wolves' coach, Kevin Martin replied, "Yes, that’s the story I've heard through this whole process."

Adelman led a practice for the Wolves' Summer League team and he's reportedly engaged Elston Turner about joining his staff, so all signs point to him pacing the sidelines in Minnesota next season. It's good news for K-Mart, who is already comfortable with Adelman from their days together in Houston.

Rick Adelman arrived in Minnesota on Monday to help the Wolves prepare for the draft.

This is yet another bit of evidence that Adelman will return as the Wolves' coach, which has been the expectation ever since the 2012-13 season ended. Minnesota has four draft picks this year, including the No. 9 pick.

Rick Adelman is expected to return to the Timberwolves as head coach next season, according to NBA.com

It's not the first report that has indicated Adelman is going to return, and at this point it would be a major surprise if he didn't come back. Adelman had previously contemplated retirement due to his wife's health, but she's doing better and Flip Saunders expects to have Adelman in the fold. "We've talked every day, every other day," Saunders said.

Rick Adelman has reportedly told Flip Saunders that he intends to coach next season.

This is at least the third report that Adelman plans to be with the Timberwolves next season, so barring something unforeseen, we feel confident projecting he'll be back.

Flip Saunders is still expecting Rick Adelman to return as head coach.

Adelman's wife Mary Kay is doing "very well," so it appears Adelman will be back on the sidelines for the Timberwolves for at least one more season barring any unforeseen developments. It's great news for the Adelman family and Minnesota.

There has been no decision made on the future of Rick Adelman, but new President of Basketball Operations Flip Saunders expects him to return.

Adelman was tentatively planning to return as coach, but nothing has been decided with certainty yet. As long as Adelman's wife doesn't have a setback with her health, he should be back on the sidelines next season, and Saunders' belief that he'll be back speaks volumes.

Rick Adelman is tentatively planning to return as head coach of the Timberwolves next season.

Great news. Adelman said he's planning to return unless "he learns something new with regards to his wife's health." Adelman will be welcomed back with open arms next season, but it's still too early to say the same about GM David Kahn.

Rick Adelman is considering retirement at the end of the season, according to Scott Howard-Cooper of NBA.com.

Adelman has taken time off this season to be with his wife, who has had some health issues, but he's been non-committal publicly about his status for next year. It's entirely possible Adelman will choose to step away, but he has two years remaining on his contract and say on basketball decisions in the front office. The Wolves are facing a defining offseason with Nikola Pekovic said to hit restricted free agency, Andrei Kirilenko possibly opting out and with Adelman possibly leaving the team.
