The Chicago Bulls are focusing their free agency plans around Carmelo Anthony, but have also put out feelers on other unrestricted free agents.
The Bulls' main free agency efforts are focused on Anthony at the moment, but the team also reportedly contacted the agents for Pau Gasol, Kirk Hinrich, Paul Pierce, and others as soon as free agency hit. It is unclear at the moment which of those free agents are targets in conjunction with Carmelo and which of those are contingency plans, but it is abundantly clear that the Bulls are setting themselves up with options for both scenarios. Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau has reportedly joined in on the recruiting of Carmelo Anthony.

"According to one of Anthony’s former coaches, Thibodeau has reached out to him and to several other coaches who have worked with Anthony with numerous calls," says Joe Cowley of the Chicago Sun-Times. Derrick Rose has also reportedly joined the conversation in recruiting 'Melo, and the Bulls organization as a whole will be doing everything in their power to persuade Carmelo to leave New York and come to Chicago in hopes of chasing a championship. Anthony reportedly will only leave New York for a sure thing, but Chicago (a team that made the playoffs this past season sans their best player) is certainly closer to raising that Larry O'Brien than New York.

The Lakers plan to reach out to the Bulls for permission to interview Tom Thibodeau about their vacant head coach position, according to ESPN Los Angeles.

This is coming on the heels of a report that Kobe Bryant likes Thibs as a possible replacement for Mike D'Antoni. There are no indications that the Bulls would grant the Lakers the permission to interview Thibodeau, nor does it seem likely that they will let one of the best coaches in the league be courted by another franchise. Sill this will not stop the Lakers from trying to pursue the 2011 coach of the year.

Bulls VP John Paxson dismissed reports of a "feud" between Tom Thibodeau and GM Gar Forman.

"From our perspective, from our seat, we’re doing great," said Paxson. "The relationship is healthy. We all want the same thing, and that’s to be as good as we possibly can out there on the floor." Thibodeau and Forman have clashed a few times over personnel decisions, including this summer's decision not to re-sign assistant coach Ron Adams, but this shouldn't be a distraction during the regular season.

Tom Thibodeau has promoted Adrian Griffin to lead assistant on the Bulls' coaching staff.

The Bulls decided in June not to retain Thibodeau's former lead assistant, Ron Adams, and Griffin was a logical successor. Griffin played in the NBA for nine seasons before transitioning to the sidelines, and he was mentioned as a candidate for a few head coaching jobs this summer.

The Bulls declined to renew the contract of Tom Thibodeau's lead assistant Ron Adams.

Adams was in his second stint with the Bulls and is very close to Thibodeau. According to the Chicago Tribune, GM Gar Forman, and not Thibodeau, was the one who made the decision. The Tribune speculates Adams could end up back in OKC, where he was before returning to the Bulls for a second time.

The Celtics will not pursue Tom Thibodeau if Doc Rivers leaves the team, a source told the Chicago Sun-Times.

We're not really sure where this came from since it was never a scenario on the table. Thibodeau signed a four-year extension with the Bulls earlier in the season and is going nowhere.

Tom Thibodeau said Wednesday he'd like the Bulls to add more shooting in the offseason.

The Bulls' perimeter game was sorely lacking this season due to injuries to Richard Hamilton, Marco Belinelli and Kirk Hinrich. We don't foresee Hamilton returning and Belinelli is slated for free agency. We could certainly see Chicago targeting a player like Kyle Korver this summer. Korver could be an ideal fit as a spot-up shooter, especially when defenses collapse on a healthy Derrick Rose driving the lane.

Tom Thibodeau hinted after Friday's Game 3 loss that there's a conspiracy to help the Heat advance in the playoffs.

We're well aware of what's going on," Thibodeau said Friday. "I'm watching how things are going. I watch very closely. What I'm seeing is ...We'll adjust accordingly." Thibs' anger stemmed largely from the ejection of Nazr Mohammed, who was tossed after shoving LeBron James to the ground. Thibs and the rest of the Bulls were adamant James flopped and Mohammed didn't deserve an ejection. We imagine Thibodeau will be hearing from David Stern's office for his comments.
